And, hoops is basically the biggest women's collegiate sport as far as television ratings.

Bueckers and Clark made their own NIL and built their own "name" and popularity for actual real companies to pay for their name. I think I'd throw JuJu into being close to that also. The million dollar stuff thrown around now is just pay-for-play from collectives.

That's my point. This "pay for play" nonsense for players unproven in WCBB is indefensible IMO, but I suppose the fan bases of those left in the "sweepstakes" will try their best.

She's past being "close" as she was getting NIL deals before entering college if memory serves correct. Believe it also ties into the family's objective to build locally in the neighbourhood she was raised in. The family history in Watts (I believe) goes back generations from what I've heard from announcers.

Exactly. And, 2025 signee Jasmine Davidson signed with Nike last November shortly after she signed her LOI with Nike school USC; way before she enters college.

When you first posted this, I first thought it was the "Louisville" Cardinals and the one above was the Stanford Cardinal landing a 2025 grad, given the tough admissions standards The Farm has. Or is that "used to" have? Has the policy been, err, adjusted for a freshman or does the school realized they'd be left at the locker room by not being more aggressive. Or, is this still contingent on the player acing out?

Stanford WBB receiving commitments from HS frosh is not unprecedented. For example, both Anna Wilson and Hailee Swain committed during/after their freshmen year. Remember that a recruiting offer is not a guarantee of admission, which comes much later. However, I do think for top recruits they are told pretty explicitly the GPA, test score, and AP requirements needed to make admissions a relatively foregone conclusion.

Committing as a 9th grader seems really silly, unless you only care about the education or you want the attention. You have no idea who the coach will be in three years and no idea how you will develop in comparison to your other athletes your age. Why close the door on other programs that might prove to be a better fit?

A long time ago, in a very rare instance the NCAA showed some good judgement and made it so recruits couldn't commit before their junior year. Maybe that was only men's hoops, but I thought it was both. But good sense was tossed out the window and that rule disappeared at some point, I don't remember when. I think what prompted that rule was when college coaches were going hard after 8th graders.

How can you stop a verbal commitment? There’s nothing binding. No paperwork.

It’s a kid saying “School X has said they will give me a scholarship and I intend to accept that scholarship when I am eligible to do so “ (no earlier than November of her senior year).

Both parties are free to change their minds until that point.

How could someone block such a statement. Seems like a freedom of speech issue?

I don't know, but it happened.

Does getting verbal commits from kids who aren't even in high school yet seem like a sane thing to do? Because that used to happen.

I think back in the day they allowed signing earlier in HS, and then scaled back so players couldn't sign until junior year. The whole thing is silly to me, because under most states' laws children (ie under age 18) can rescind a contract they signed at will at any time.

Not that it's a big deal, but specific order was Texas, South Carolina, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State, LSU, and UConn.

@southie is doing what all good Homer fans do - reading every tea leaf and bird entrail for signs their desired recruit is signaling they'll commit to their team. Because she listed Texas first, that's obviously where she'll be going.

The prohibition isn't on committing, per se, but on offering/communicating. Prospects can't commit to offers they don't have.

There are already rules about when coaches can contact prospects. I presume there’s a starting grade?
But it’s not like they would or should raise that to 11th grade.

Not that it's a big deal, but if you combine the two posts like voting ballots and break ties with SEC tournament championships, the results are:

1. South Carolina 12 points
2. Kentucky 12 points
3.(tie) Ohio State 8
3.(tie) Texas 8
5. LSU 6
6. North Carolina 6
7. UConn 4

If I'm not mistaken, the way they get around this is to have the student athlete make the contact. That's easy enough for college coaches to arrange through AAU, high school coaches or other adults who pass along a message that the college coach would like for you to make contact. After June 1 following their sophomore year, the college coaches can start directly making contact.

That's my understanding as well, but I think June is for MBB and Sept is for WBB.

  • Direct Recruiting-like Conversations - June 1st (after Sophomore Year): On June 1st, after their Sophomore Year, college coaches can engage in recruiting-related conversations with prospective student-athletes. These conversations can be about where you stand on their list, what you have been doing in your recruiting process, and their recruiting timeline. This communication can include phone calls, emails, video chat software (Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, etc.) and social media direct messaging.
