That's rough if so. Both her parents went to Texas and her mom played for Conradt. I have to imagine playing for Texas WCBB was her dream growing up.

It's interesting how different schools have different cultures around how cutthroat they are with their student-athletes. I can't imagine a world where Tara were to retire and an admitted Stanford commit were told to look elsewhere by her successor. (Though made more unlikely by the fact that her probable successor does much of her recruiting!) As far as I'm concerned, once you're in, you're in. "Family" starts at the time of the commitment, unless those Nike shirts are just empty words for show, until a better prospective family member comes along...

In fairness to Coach Schaefer I was only speculating. Also, if it was determined that she wouldn’t be a good fit or add to the program then it is better to tell her now when she still has plenty of time to find another school. I’m sure there are several players’ kids that do not have the skill or ability to help Texas. Coach Schaefer said in an interview that while alumni and fans like how he helps players graduate and do well in life he was hired to produce a top ten program. I’m not naive enough to think he hasn’t cut a player if a better player became available. However, and this isn’t a rebut of your comment, I also think the cut throat label is a little overplayed depending the general feeling of a program and/or coach. In reality players are encouraged to leave at all programs for a multitude of reasons. Again, this isn’t to be argumentative toward anything you said.

Yeah, and I think Stanford is probably somewhat unusual insofar as the academic hurdles to admission are as considerable as the athletic hurdles to getting a scholly offer, so telling a committed recruit to go elsewhere would potentially be much more unfair given the extra studying, high test scores, and APs that the recruit likely completed just to get in. But as far as I'm concerned as a fan, I'd rather we forego a top ten recruit than cut loose a lower-ranked recruit who worked her arse off to get in and who gratefully accepted the offer. But I am probably pretty old-school, Don Vito Corleone-like when it comes to the value of loyalty.
 
I agree with TheFarmFan, it's kind of a grim picture you're painting Vic as. I imagine your speculation has some grounds for truths, but we also don't know if it's because she feels Vic is too much demanding of a coach for her. Or some other reason that had to do with the new roster additions (5 of them), including 2 new top 20 recruits.

No idea when you thought Vic has ever cut a player here. He certainly didn't cut Bre'Amber Scott. She didn't exceed the maximum roster spots anyways.

Well, since she's followed McCray (and vise versa) I'll assume she's seriously thinking about STATE. If Vic did cut her, then it's a good revenge to come play at the school the man who said you weren't good enough built, and may be a sweeter one were we to beat Texas next time we play them and she'd play a seriously part in the win.

I didn’t say I thought he had ever cut a player but if I found out it happened I wouldn’t be surprised. Regarding Texas he had two recruits that are now going other places once he arrived. I and others speculated both were encouraged to look elsewhere as they didn’t fit what Coach Schaefer needed at Texas. I had heard that from more than one source. It wasn’t meant to paint him in a poor light. I personally like Coach Schaefer and think he is a straight up guy. I’m now going to follow Texas specifically because he is there. D Carrington is transferring because she no longer has a scholarship available for her at Stanford. However I don’t think anything bad about their coach. My point is that rarely do we know exactly the circumstances regarding when a player leaves and often the speculation is based off a person’s perspective of the coach or program. I think that is often unfair to assume the coaches are simply cut throat. I think it is equally unfair to assume the player is trouble just because you may be a fan of a particular school.

Please don't spread fake news in furtherance of a whataboutism. Carrington is seeking a red-shirt fifth year on scholarship, which no school guarantees (and no school can). Initially, it did not appear likely that a scholarship slot would be open for her, because Tara always recruits to have a full class. Stanford is fortunate that its women's basketball scholarships are all endowed, and Tara has repeatedly stated that her goal in recruiting is to give as many young student-athletes the Stanford experience as possible. That is why Stanford always carries a full roster unless there's an unplanned transfer or medical retirement.

However, with Estella Moschkau's recently announced three-year graduation and grad-transfer to Wisconsin, a scholarship is now open to Carrington. For whatever reason, she has chosen to look elsewhere nonetheless. Those circumstances are totally different from telling a committed recruit that they should look elsewhere because the coaching staff no longer supports their joining the team.

It wasn’t a whataboutism but instead that was a recent example that came to mind. If I had wanted to do that I would have done it in the first post. Again my point is it might be unfair to label a coach or program cutthroat based on speculation. I went out of my way to say I didn’t think anything bad about Stanford due to a player leaving after no longer having a scholarship. Based on speculation you said the Texas “family” t-shirts meant nothing. I didn’t think that was fair based on that.
 
I have not seen any video of Paige Bradley's play. So, I don't have an opinion about her skill and talent, and projection in college and in Vic's style of hoops play. Bradley seemed excited (on twitter) when Aailiyah Moore and Rori Harmon committed, sending out her congrats to them, and about playing together in the future at Texas. Perhaps there were some recent discussions with the coaches about how she'd fit in playing-wise

Kind of like with current Texas player, Shae Routt, Coach Karen Aston often seemed to feel the need to offer "legacy" recruits at a very young age, especially those whose mothers played hoops for Texas. And, these recruits have grown up loving Texas their whole lives; so, it's an "easy" sell to get their verbal commitments. In some ways, this resembles "nepotism"; and, just my opinion, it showed favoritism towards certain recruits because the coach(es) had a friendship with their parent(s).

But, as cold as it sounds, this is "business". The decision has been made for Texas and Paige to go in different directions. Vic and staff have to make tough coaching decisions, and that includes recruiting. They are being paid a lot of money to win basketball games, and be successful in the post-season. So, they have to decide which recruits will help them do that, or in the end, their jobs are at stake.

Just like when recruits or signees decide they want to move on from their commitment to a head coach who has left for another job, a new head coach should have the same leeway as it pertains to building their player roster.

I may have missed it, but who besides 2021 Paige Bradley is moving on? 2020 Grad-transfer Katie Benzan to Maryland? It was my understanding that she since she signed her ASA with Texas in November, only she can basically "void" it, and not the school she signed with. I don't have all the details on how things went down once Aston was let go, but she sure did sign with Maryland rather quickly after Schaefer took over; there wasn't even any kind of announcement by anyone that she was not going to attend Texas as planned.

UT may be one of the only schools that can lay any claim to calling itself a business, as it has one of the only AD's in the country that is not subsidized by the state, by the university, or by student fees. (Though it still benefits from donors and non-profit tax status, so properly speaking, it really isn't a business, because real businesses pay property taxes, income taxes, and don't operate on donations.)

And for lots of reasons we don't need to get into, I don't think "this is business" is a proper way to characterize student-athlete recruiting, as there are myriad ways that process is (quite rightly) handled differently than in professional, actual-business leagues. I may have an increasingly antiquated view of things, but one of those differences is keeping your promise to 17- and 18-year-olds. I honestly don't mean to slam either Vic or UT, as I think your view is probably the prevailing view among most WCBB coaches and fans - it's nothing personal to either of them. For me, however, once you're in, you're in, we'll make it work, and you're part of the family. I'm fine with being accused of being in the minority on this one.

Are the coaches' jobs on the line if they don't win enough due to incorrect recruit evaluations? If the answer is "yes", then it's a business as jobs are at stake due to decision-making. Like it or not, collegiate athletics are a business.

When Coach Aston lost her job, she wasn't the only one. It had a trickle down effect which cost her assistant coaches their jobs, the support staff members their jobs, and some training staff members their jobs. Sounds like a business to me . . .

Coach Schaefer and staff were recruiting her while at MSU. Why do you think she ends up at Kentucky?

Also, Coach Schaefer will normally narrow down to two recruits for each slot needed. For example, at point guard he was originally recruiting R Johnson, K McPherson, and R Harmon. R Johnson looks to be a South Carolina lean so he had the other two. If he offered B Hall then he feels pretty good about his relationship with her. She is the type of player that can swing between 3, 2, and even 4.

Well, Kentucky borders Ohio, so close to home. And, her twitter had a lot of Kentucky stuff (prior to picking up a Texas offer). Get the feeling she wants to play in the SEC based on several of her finalists. I don't get the feeling she'll stay in-state and play at OSU, but the home state school can never be counted out, especially during this pandemic.
