Oregon State fans were hopeful as always, but no one that I know thought that Jersey was headed to Corvallis. Was it the Goforth connection that led to that feeling? The message board for OSU wasn't overly optimistic that another top Arkansas-based recruit would leave her native state for the Pacific Northwest. Lightning didn't strike twice in the same place.

No concrete info, but if I had to guess, I think Baylor and Oregon were her other top contenders, though she did mention OSU among programs that she was interested in.

Makes sense. After committing, she said her top-5 was Arkansas, Baylor, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Oregon State. Huge for Arkansas to keep her away from those four programs.
 
I wonder where Kyndall Hunter ends up, would be a really good pickup.


Also Jasmine Shavers is announcing her top 8 on 5/3

Encouraging for Oregon State fans to make her Final 5. We have become accustomed to OSU being in the final mix for Top 20 players only to be weeded out near the end. Would a more uptempo offense that featured more transition opportunities allow Oregon State to have a better chance to have landed the likes of Jersey, Van Lith, Daniels, Caitlyn Clark, Ionescu, Sabally, Hebard, Kiana Williams, and the many recent others that have had Oregon State in their mix until the end before breaking Beavers' hearts? Many Oregon State fans seem to think so. If I am a high-scoring elite high school recruit, the appeal of grinding out every possession in a slow-it-down half court offense would be very limited.

You forgot to mention Jazz Shelley btw,. Westcoast I really think you hit on something regarding the perception of how teams play. You see the same in football. Coach Ruecks methodical approach while effective with the right mix of players is a harder sell for some, not all but some. His style would work well with a big girl like Sedonia Prince and then build around that. I think Aquino threw the whole recruiting balance off in his last class. She will never see the floor at OSU but she would have been a cornerstone to build around.

From what I heard behind the scenes just recently Sedonia going to be a fun one to watch. She has a charismatic personality and likely a crowd favorite.

With success, you should get better players and with better players, you get better athleticism and ability to score, with ability to score, you want more opportunities hence a faster tempo and Scott needs to adjust as evidenced by Slocum leaving. Not that I want to say Slocum is “right” to leave but as his program has grown, Scott needs to grow/evolve...
 
There's no question that Rueck's style of play is why Slocum grad transferred.

What is a question, imo, is why she chose to transfer into it in the first place (though it was closer to home and a very high caliber program).

That has been a big complaint from even the diehard fans that have watched Rueck miraculously grow the Oregon State program the past decade from a starting point of an extreme mess.

The offense could use an update/upgrade. We see the same back screen for the post near the free throw line that was used during the Ruth Hamblin years. Us fans can see it coming and opposing defenses jump that route routinely. PAC-12 coaches catch on very quickly as well. Evolution is necessary in order to stay ahead of opposing defense in our conference.

Slocum made the right move in leaving for Arkansas. She will be set free to run and get easier buckets for her team in transition.

Perhaps Mr. Rueck would be advised to take Geno up on his offer to go and watch a few of his practices and see what for players might be available to act as the "offensive coordinator"...It benefits both programs, Scott gets an offense to compete with the Ducks and Cardinal and Geno might get another person in his tree to learn from another elite coach... :rolleyes:
 
It’s seemed Rueck’s teams are what they are. They’ll be at the top in the Pac-12 (typically 1-3) in FG%, 3FG%, FG% defense, RPG, APG, probably closer to the bottom in TOPG and FGA, and last in SPG - year in and year out.

When he has the right personnel, it seems to work really well, but the past two years, his personnel seemed better suited for an uptempo game with Slocum and Pivec, but they still played pretty slow.

Yep. The defense is trained not to overplay, so steals only occur for Oregon State when the opponent makes a bad pass.

Numerous times when the team had favorable numbers in transition Rueck would call out a play to Slocum and the opposing defense had time to set up while the play call was relayed to the point guard The Beavers play a lot of 5v5 in halfcourt instead of taking advantage of 3v2 and 3v3 in transition. It is certainly a highly controlled system that demands precise execution to be successful. Scoring droughts often arise when defenses force Oregon State to grind out every possession.

You know Geno and Kelly Graves talk alot of basketball during the off season. But they are both out going personalities. Coach Rueck seems more to himself in that aspect.

It is a good system if you have the exact pieces of the puzzle that fit well together.
Very structured in execution and works well if you have a Hamblin type player.

I think OSU still has hope that Mitrovic will be the new version of Hamblin, just bigger, taller (6-9 vs.6-6) and maybe a bit better from the get-go. She certainly is a space eater with her big frame.

Very true. My biggest concern about Mitrovic is her lack of lateral mobility. Hopefully, we will see improved quickness from her when her knee is 100%. She will be a load to defend if her conditioning and health allows her to see the floor next season.
 
espnW #68 Tori Garza, a 6-1 guard from Texas, has committed to Oklahoma State:

They added a really good JUCO center a few weeks ago as well. She, Natasha Mack, and Vivian Gray should be a really nice nucleus.

What's funny is that Rueck's style is much better suited to attracting recruits in the 20-100 ranking who are great shooters and merely decent athletes than recruits in the top 20 who are often both and looking ahead to pro ball, where being able to create off the dribble is a must.

It's not a coincidence that his highest ranked recruits, Slocum and Pivec, were often at their best when his offensive sets broke down and they had to make something happen off the dribble. But given that Corvallis is not a dream location and OSU is not a resource rich school, I think he's wise to keep a system in place that will overperform in lean talent years even if it underperforms (as it did) in talent-rich years.

So I have a question for the Recruit experts out there-in 2020, Aaliyah Edwards was ranked #23 and in 2021 Latissa Lattimore is ranked #11 and yet when I go on the Canadian Basketball site, I can't find Lattimore listed on any squad while Edwards was with the U17, U18 and this past year on the Senior National team. I get that many of the mainstays of the SWNT might have been playing elsewhere and that's why Aaliyah was bumped up but what about Lattimore not on any teams? My point being is either the 2020 Class is loaded with oodles of talent forcing Edwards down in ranking, the 2021 squad is very short on talent and Lattimore gets bumped up or the HoopGurlz rankings for Canadian players are abysmal. To me, Edwards seems much further along than Lattimore. What am I missing here?

I wonder how much of the difference in rankings has to do with Lattimore’s very visible social media and recruiting presence. Edwards keeps her IG private and we know very little about which schools she was involved in during the recruiting process.

I’m not insinuating that’s Lattimore isn’t a good player and ranked where she should be, but I do think if Edwards hyped herself up the way Lattimore does, she would have probably been higher in the final 2020 rankings.
