What's funny is that Rueck's style is much better suited to attracting recruits in the 20-100 ranking who are great shooters and merely decent athletes than recruits in the top 20 who are often both and looking ahead to pro ball, where being able to create off the dribble is a must.

It's not a coincidence that his highest ranked recruits, Slocum and Pivec, were often at their best when his offensive sets broke down and they had to make something happen off the dribble. But given that Corvallis is not a dream location and OSU is not a resource rich school, I think he's wise to keep a system in place that will overperform in lean talent years even if it underperforms (as it did) in talent-rich years.
As a Stanford fan who likely watched all three of the Cardinal's wins over Oregon State in 2020, were you surprised by anything that the Beavers threw at Stanford offensively? Stanford is a quality defensive team and scouts as well as any program in the nation. It seemed to me that Stanford knew Oregon State's offensive sets and tendencies as well or better than anyone else the Beavers faced this past season. Aside from Slocum going off during the first half of the first game at Gill, Tara's team seemed to know what was coming on nearly every Oregon State halfcourt possession.

So I have a question for the Recruit experts out there-in 2020, Aaliyah Edwards was ranked #23 and in 2021 Latissa Lattimore is ranked #11 and yet when I go on the Canadian Basketball site, I can't find Lattimore listed on any squad while Edwards was with the U17, U18 and this past year on the Senior National team. I get that many of the mainstays of the SWNT might have been playing elsewhere and that's why Aaliyah was bumped up but what about Lattimore not on any teams? My point being is either the 2020 Class is loaded with oodles of talent forcing Edwards down in ranking, the 2021 squad is very short on talent and Lattimore gets bumped up or the HoopGurlz rankings for Canadian players are abysmal. To me, Edwards seems much further along than Lattimore. What am I missing here?

Having seen both play, I've long thought Edwards has more overall potential though Lattimore certainly looks like she has a big ceiling. PN and Blue Star (for some reason) don't rank Edwards so we're really only taking about two outlets. ASGR has Edwards #11.

There are just oddities. I have been underwhelmed when watching Hannah Gusters yet she gets ranked higher than Edwards at both ASGR and ESPN.

Thank Sluconn. Any idea if Lattimore is on the short list for the Cananadian U18 etc teams? I mean why I am confused is the Canadian Basketball brain trust has had Edwards on 3 different squads and I can't find Lattimore making any squads Canadian FIBA team. It seems to me they would know and given Lattimore is listed at 6'5" I would think if she was as good as HG and ASGR is stating, she would be on a national youth team. At this point, I would correctly infer that Edwards is the better player.
I also agree with you that the rating agencies tend to over-rank height. Just back through the years and see girls at 6'4" or taller who were ranked very high yet, never panned out. Most infamous is Mercedes Russell. I think that is a good exercise to look at-how have the recruits 6'4" (or should I start with 6'3"?) faired when compared to the 5 players ranked ahead of them and the 5 players ranked behind them. Thoughts? That question is not just for Sluconn, though I would value his feedback, but for others who have an idea as well.

Russell should not be considered because of who coached her. A better coach would have gotten a lot more out of her. Did you see how she looked this past season in the WNBA? She was showing some talent I did not see at Tennessee. In college she looked very overrated, did not play much her rookie year in the WNBA but showed much improvement last season. I believe she had been traded from the original team that drafted her. The system a player is in can make a big difference.

Joyner Holmes, Rellah Booth, Sidney Cooks, Nancy Mulkey, Torey McCoy, Cierra Johnson, Jenna Staiti, Beatrice Mompremier, Jade Williams are all players I can name without much research and while you can again qualify why each player did not "improve" they did chose those coaches and sometimes talent transcends coaching. However you want to state it, these players underperformed for what ever reasons. In theory, the recruiting agency should be assessing mental acuity as much as physical skills, at least that's what they say.

When you hear the Canadian National Team coaches talk about Aliyah regarding her potential and her maturity level, I have no doubt she will be an AA at UConn.

I’ve wondered the same thing about Lattimore’s absence from Canadian youth national teams. Clearly, she would have no issues making these teams, and depending on her birthdate I’m guessing would have been among the most talented on many of the youth teams. Her Crestwood teammate, Day-Wilson, has never been on a team.

Morasha Wiggins, 6-0 G ranked #50, named her 12 finalists:

Penn State, Michigan State, DePaul, North Carolina, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Southern Cal.

I was not commenting on a post about those players you listed, only on a post about Russell. I really don't care why those other players did not improve.

Mercedes also had injuries to hamper, the bottom line though is she should NOT have been the #1 recruit...maybe 10ish at best. Deshields was the most talented of that group.

Long time reader, first time poster (sorry, felt like that was necessary :)). Thought I'd help answer this question.

Lattimore has opted not to participate in the try outs for the Canadian basketball teams in previous years. She has been invited to attend the sessions. You will see her name on their assessment camps lists for the last few years.

I'm sure she would have made the squads had she attended the final rounds. No idea why there isn't interest to play for the teams.

USC is roughly 20 minutes from her high school. Probably wants to stay close to home.
True. I’m curious as to other schools she considered. There aren’t many true posts this coming year and I’m sure several programs went hard after her. She was a big target for Coach Schaefer.

This one surprises me.
Me too. I know UCLA was in the mix, and I think in theory she was on the Stanford long list, though with no substantiated evidence of an offer. Trakh definitely doing a good job rebuilding talent.

McCray making a lot of finalist lists, I will be interested in who she pulls in. I have a gut feeling Shavers ends up at MSU just from the vibe she has with McCray, she recruited her at ODU was going to have them in her final list before the coaching change. Although I can see Shavers style at Rutgers.

Who knows at this point ;)

PG out of Florida ranked #93 by HoopGurlz

I seen her play quite a lot this year. I think she’s better than her ranking. She and Jasmine Peaks are a very good backcourt. Barker is lucky to have them both.
