Next year will the be the first time in over 5 years that South Carolina will not have a true center... we have Coates now and we had Elem Ibiam for a few years before that, both are low post bangers without much beyond that, in games at least. So for awhile now we've been that low post based offense.. but next year we won't have a true center. We'll have Wilson, who likes to face the basket and hit jumpers or drive... Jennings, who will likely play at the 5 but can score inside and outside and has 3-point range (especially her freshmen year at Kentucky)... Herbert-Harrigan, who likes to face the basket and has range... and Williams, who is a PF that likes to work from the elbows and drive to the basket. No true low post squatter in that group.. The good thing is that we'll have the ability to move more around the court.. and our guards will have more lanes to the basket.. the bad thing is that we lose a lot of what a low post presence like Coates can bring to a team.

The only posts/forwards that I know for sure South Carolina is recruiting for 2018 are Nelson-Ododa, Smith, and Danielle Cosgrove.... anybody else I haven't been able to confirm for sure. South Carolina needs more pure shooters.. basketball players that know how to put the ball through the hoop. UConn doesn't recruit players that can't shoot... We bring in two bonafide shooters next year in Jackson and Troup.. Jackson being the midrange specialist and Troup being the long distance sniper. We need to get better at recruiting shooters as well as athletes... being in the SEC means you need athletes to bang, but you also need shooters to compete.

Notre Dame and Ms. Cosgrove are also checking each other out. MM went to see her in Long Island and Ms. Cosgrove took in the FSU game. She also went out to Colorado. Her Hoopgurlz profile appears to be accurate (as opposed to, say, Jade Williams). Like her inner-post moves, particularly the little swoop hooks, both left and right. Plus she's got good range on that jumper.

Do you think Cosgrove is more of a center or a power forward?

Compared to what you're used to seeing at center the last few years (bangers), she's a power forward, with distinct stretch capabilities (she can drill it).
Cosgrove can play down low -- I love the variety of hooks she has in her arsenal -- but she likes to (and can) bring the game outside. I could very easily see her settling into the Katherine Westbeld role, who is a slightly undersized but game and canny# 4 right now.

Well this is good news! I've always liked Ms. DeCosta's game and when we were cut I was certainly disappointed but she certainly has the tools to be a great player on the next level.

Nelson- Ododa always raves about how Destanni was the best pg she ever played with in the u17 world championships. I am told they are very close and keep in contact with each other. Keep in mind that DeCosta played with them both as well so Destanni could be our little "quiet" recruiter.

We discussed it a lil in the McDonald's thread. .. About its going to be interesting to see who wins the NC high school player of the year. I saw where a Charlotte Observer writer said it would be likely that Bailey,(unc cheat) from Providence Day school would win. She was the only McDonald's team member from NC... And led her team to another private school state title. Grisserts, team lost in the 4A sectional playoffs.. While Boykin (Duke) has lead her team to the state final in the 2A classification.

Boykin has insane stats and has the record for most points scored in a single season....and she is the highest ranked of the three.. But she plays in a small town in the east.. Whereas the other two play in big metros.

Yes, nothing against Coates but Dawn's insistence on throwing the ball inside so much has probably stunted the growth of the other players a bit and leads to a really predictable offense that can be defensed by really well coached teams....wouldn't be surprised if you found more success using the more fast paced attack if you have the right players to run it...
I agree with you on this and wonder why not adapt what ND does with Turner as she seems to do ok in a guard orientated offense as a very mobile center ala Wilson. Plus as one of the best guards ever to play, I never understood Dawn's efforts to keep pounding it inside.

If you have been watching SC for the past 5 games (not sure you have) you can see that SC has been very formidable in the 4 guard 1 post line up or even the 3 guard 2 forward line up. Those two line ups allow us to move the ball much faster and run up and down much more. Next year I can bet you that you won't see a strictly pound the ball offense. SC scores 80.9 ppg when the fast pace offense is on the floor so expect to see a lot of that in the NCAA tourney and next year.

Maybe Staley will hire a 2nd offensive coordinator to help her figure it out. Between the 3 of them they should be able to come up with something.

Just in case you don't think anyone is keeping track, I am.
It been about a decade now since ( fill in the blank) was going to be the next TN All-American.
10 years is a long time-just sayin!

I think when Pat got sick. That the recruiting took a hit.
