Big East. It pays well for basketball only and ND is a better fit there. I don’t see ND wanting to play at Kansas St, Baylor and OK St on a regular basis. Georgetown, PC and Villanova are much more their demographic. Add big games against UConn, NYC city games against SJU and some games in Chicago, Indy and Milwaukee, where they have tons of fans, and it seems like a no brainer. You’d see ND improve in Olympic sports in the Big East and the Big East would benefit as well.

Does it? I'm not so sure about that if you prorate for contracts and assigned say 20% for basketball, I think they're better.

Possible…. But don’t forget ACC also provides ND football some benefits: scheduling and bowl access.

I also think ND would be a great add for BE and if we’re stuck here, not bad to have them in conference. Might help UConn fb schedule.
 
I did a review of ND budget a few years ago
They were making about $20,000,000 from their old media deal back then
With a sold group of donors contributing $150,000,000 a year
That group thinks ND should stay independent for a number of years
guess what you stay independent .
Remember the golden rule , those that provide the gold make the rules

Is the $150,000,000 just the football donors or all donors?

I’m talking about if the ACC gets ripped apart. I don’t think the B12 would be very appealing to ND.

Agreed. If the ACC is ripped apart, that will force ND's hand and they will go to the B1G if the slot that is being held for them is still there.

I think the bigger the conferences get, the less valuable ND becomes, just my opinion. And if the ACC gets ripped apart, it will depend on which valuable programs went where and who remains. I think it would be more likely the ACC survives in some form rather than ND going to the Big East, even though the Big East might be a better fit. it will be a fight between the Big 12 and ACC.

Why would Notre Dame put their olympic sports in a midmajor conference? The ACC in any form will keep them. UConn would leave the Big East in a heartbeat if offered.

(Though I've said this before, Notre Dame has done an outstanding job carving out a niche for itself. For a small university to occupy such a big place in the national athletics consciousness is a really big deal. My only knock against ND is that they look after their own interests, and not necessarily their conference partners. Now, to be clear, they have no obligation to look after anyone else, but that's something to be aware of anytime you are involved with them. Even with that, though, being involved with them typically is better than not, at least for a while. I am a begrudging fan of their administration. )

That's true... In the case of Notre Dame, they already are a member of the Big10 hockey conference and are even written into the Big10's media deal in terms of a valuation if/when they were to become a full member. I'm sure they're talking to each other all the time.

People continually misunderstand where Notre Dame fits into the world.

They fit in wherever they want.

As long as they have their NBC deal, they are pretty much immune to any conference realignment pressure.

Right now, I would say that it is more likely that someone like Michigan would leave the Big Ten to attempt the Notre Dame life than it is that Notre Dame will buckle down and join a conference. (Neither are very likely.)

Side-benefit.. it would allow them to schedule 9 football games for all the teams in the conference... something that is mathematically impossible with their current configuration.

I would love to go to the ACC specifically as a jumping off point for leaving the ACC.
 
We’re reaching a point where UConn basketball programs garner more media attention and revenue potential (let alone staggering NCAA credits) that they ought to consider going independent rather than sharing all the media money/credits with the BE. Then schedule an alliance with BE or ACC or B12. Those conferences would have to go along as it would provide them extra juice to Drive up their own media money featuring marquee UConn matchups. Basically, the reverse version of Notre Dame.

That wouldn't work. UConn in the Big East is fine for now, but the goal is a P4 invite in the future. These last 4 years, UConn athletics have been on an incredible run even though we don't get P4 media revenues.

Staggering NCAA credits?

In the 2024 financial report (covering the 2023-24 season), UConn reported $2.91 million in NCAA distributions. That's a material number, but in the world of big-time college athletics, I would hardly call it staggering. By way of comparison, direct institutional support during the same period was about $32 million and donations was about $52 million.

Were we to join either the ACC or the big 12 conference distributions would total roughly $50 million if you include the share of college football playoff money we would earn. That's roughly 10 times what we get from the big east. If we have the opportunity to join any of the P4 conferences, we take it in a heartbeat. The notion that we can be successful as "an independent" isn't supported by the math.

Obviously P4 invite is priority. I’m just saying — at some point you have consider the alternative to sharing the pie with BE. And, the cumulative NCAA credits add up year after year, especially at the pace our programs now perform.

There is no way we get anywhere close to a full share for 10+ years, but we would have the football investment obligations immediately. The idea that such a deal wouldn’t lay waste to the athletic department is not supported by math.

We need to figure out a way to get a full share, which means we need something big to happen. The Big 12 and ACC are not going to invite us and give us a full share because they like us. They have to need us.
