It didn't come out until after the BE fell apart when immediately after Cuse & Pitt jumped, ND made their deal with the ACC and then WVU saw the writing on the wall and sold their services to the B-12.
I searched for it, but couldn't find it. If that really was the single predicate for the big east falling apart, it was a world class screwup by Trangese. It feels credible though. I vaguely remember him writing to Swofford to apologize for giving the New York Times and interview that was critical of the raid. That's Charmin soft.

On this logic, MLB should just put Yankees and Dodgers in WS every year. Let Boston, Cleveland, and Detroit play in a fall series and give them a fake trophy.

This is nothing more than schools trying to create more advantages for success at the expense of others, ie a money grab.

it erodes the product and isn’t good for the game long term.

It’s not killing soccer/futbol

The opposite is true. Relegation is not killing soccer. But The American owners of the biggest clubs just proposed a super league and the fans revolted. That is analogous to what is being proposed here and it would kill soccer.

WVU would’ve rather been invited to the ACC. They went to B12 to save themselves just like UConn would.

Here's an SI article which I believe misstates the when and how.

Blaudschun article

I had a couple articles downloaded on an older computer (it may still be in my attic). A couple ACC school presidents were offended by his comment that they weren't serious about football and would be better served playing Rutgers, Temple and an upgraded UConn.

A little different than you described it but still an epically dumb idea. Sure it might've helped firm up the ACC, but it would have started the big east move towards irrelevancy sooner.

The Tranghese stuff had nothing to do with the ACC raiding the Big East - the ACC needed to expand to get to two divisions and hold a championship game. They also had a negotiation upcoming for their rights and they wanted to add markets.

Actually Trangese approached the ACC about the BE’s football playing members being allowed to play in the ACC for football only. The ACC rejected this and then the BE FB conference was formed.

but as we found out, football is everything.
