I could see ND joining the Big 10 in the future. Why? The Big 10 is not just a Midwest brand anymore with the additions of Rutgers and Maryland on the East Coast and USC/UCLA/Washington/Oregon on the West Coast. Grab 2 or 3 ACC schools and you have a broad footprint. ND could play a 9 game conference schedule, Navy, and 2 other OOC games. Look at Notre Dame's all time games played: 1) Navy, 2) USC, 3) Purdue, 4) Michigan St., 5) Pitt, 6) Army, 7) Northwestern, 8) Michigan, 9) Georgia Tech, 10) Stanford, 11) Indiana, 12) Air Force

Could be why the Irish just inked a 12 year scheduling deal (outside of their ACC commitment) to play Clemson annually for 12 years. They may be bolstering their future schedule anticipating needing that annual game.

If the ACC implodes many ND fans may prefer a return to the Big East Conference. A primarily Catholic conference with a few schools within driving distance and many basketball games within greater Metropolis. ND basketball may actually turn things around with regular visits to major cities and more regional competition. The only catch would be if the ugly stepchild from boston somehow convinced ND to bring it along too. I suppose cuse and bcu would be an acceptable compromise.

When Clemson leaves the ACC, I could see them killing off this series.

Miami's AD is espousing a two level ACC, I think. Kind of wild take..

"The brands need to play each other more," Radakovich said. "That's what has to happen. Do we divide into two divisions? Who gets to play Notre Dame? How are we doing those kinds of things? And if the SEC goes to nine (conference games) we might have to go to nine as well with a bifurcated brands and non-brands [divide]."

FSU's AD seems to not be far off this....
"Today in college football, more than ever, it's important for strong brands to play strong brands," Alford said. "That helps our brand, as well as all of us within the conference. We've been consistent in that belief for a while now as you can see in our nonconference scheduling philosophy. It's important for our conference and our media partners."

I know they are not proposing this, but if they are looking at a two tiered ACC, a promotion/relegation system would be wild.

This isn't a completely new idea, just a variation of a proposal Mike Tranghese (then commissioner of the Big East) made to John Swofford (then ACC commissioner) and the presidents of a few ACC schools in 2000.

He proposed that for football only the two conferences swap out some schools, the better football programs (FSU, Miami, etc.) play in an ACC football conference while the programs that aren't competitive (Rutgers, Wake, etc.) play in a Big East football conference.

This set in motion the ACC raids on the BE as a) he let everyone know the better football programs in the BE were ripe for the taking and b) he insulted half of the ACC schools by stating that they weren't capable of being competitive in football and would be better served playing in a B level conference.

Rutgers was in the ACC?

This makes a lot of sense. Could see the power conf grow to 20 and manage their football issues with an internal relegation system.

Rutgers was in the ACC?
Big East. It was just before Miami started assembling an unfathomable amount of talent (tail end of the Butch Davis years), Syracuse was still very solid, Va Tech started getting ranked on a regular basis, Pitt, BC and WVU were pretty good while Rutgers and Temple had difficulty with 1AA (now FCS) and we were a couple years away from joining (and in most opinions, bring the bottom of the conference down further).

Tranghese, who felt priority one was to keep a conference for the catholic schools thought that if for football only, the nine better football programs played in one conference while the remaining football schools (who he claimed didn't want to compete for a national championship; he actually said that to a group of ACC school presidents( would be in another conference.

A few months later Miami & FSU started discussing how to maximize their positions. The result was the first raid.

Relegation has been going on for a while. It started when the Big 8 combined with the SWC and relegated SMU, Houston, Rice, and TCU. When the ACC raided the Big East, they relegated, in the end, UConn and USF. When the Big 10 raided the Pac 12, they relegated, ultimately, Oregon St. and Washington St. And, you can say the Big 12 was relegated from a top league to a lower league with the losses of Texas A&M, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri. In my opinion, there will be schools lost in the ACC and then the remaining schools could be relegated.

I’m thinking of something different. Have an 18 to 22 school conference and for football set the conf schedule every year with a system that has a group A and group B, The A schools play only each other and are given exclusive access to the CFB playoffs and top bowls. The B group plays each other and only get access to the middling and lower bowls. The bottom 3 or 4 of the A group swop with the top 4 of the B at the end of each season.

The system could be run a lot of ways, but the basic idea is that a conf would be in a better position under this structure to add a school like UConn to the B1G or even UConn to the ACC. Interesting to me that Miami and FSU mentioned this idea. Hmmmm.

On this logic, MLB should just put Yankees and Dodgers in WS every year. Let Boston, Cleveland, and Detroit play in a fall series and give them a fake trophy.

This is nothing more than schools trying to create more advantages for success at the expense of others, ie a money grab.

it erodes the product and isn’t good for the game long term.

It is the networks...the TV slots... that are driving the money bus. And ultimately how one's team fares in viewing.

I do not have ESPN Plus, thus won't see UConn-Cuse.

Texas-San Jose St..... Duke-llinois....NC State-Virginia... will be on during that time slot on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2...and Iowa-Iowa State on Fox. (and UNC-Virginia are playing each other in a non-conference game in which the results do not effect conference standing).

Two teams in the New York market, and the game is on ESPN+. The networks basically decide who America watches on Saturday...if there has been, or will be, relegation...the networks are deeply involved.

Just an FYI if you have cable or YouTube TV or Hulu Plus I think you can put those credentials into the espn app and watch today’s game. Still a pain in the behind though.

This is the first that I've heard about this. Was this reported anywhere?

It's on ACCNX as well as ESPN+-- If you get the ACC network, you should be able to get the game when logged in with your TV credentials.

Problem with this view is ND didn’t make its 6 game deal because of football. They made it over other sports. And they get paid more for basketball in the ACC than they would have earned in the NBE. But the Irish could easily plant basketball back in the NBE. Or probably any other pretty good league. If the Big 10 was serious about killing ND independence it would not schedule the Irish and it would convince the SEC to follow suit. As it is ND could put together an independent schedule with only a sprinkling of ACC teams plus B10, B12 and SEC teams with the odd G5 thrown in for balance.

The SEC and ND are cooperating on scheduling.

(Sankey does not want ND forced into the enemy conference, so playoff access for ND and future SEC games will continue.)

ND plays Texas A&M and Arkansas this season.

ND has upcoming games with Alabama, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, etc...

The Clemson series has a provision that states that the series will continue despite conference realignment.

USC and ND will announce an extension of their series soon, with the game being on Labor Day weekend every year.

ND is not giving up football independence. Despite The Dude's fantasies, ND independence is not dependent on the ACC surviving.

ND would either send its other sports to the Big East or cut a partial deal with the Big 12.

I actually think ND in the Big East for basketball makes a lot of sense for both parties if the ACC fell apart.
ND claimed the strength of the ACC in olympic sports was a reason to seek out membership in the past, the BE wasn't competitive enough.

This is the first that I've heard about this. Was this reported anywhere?
It didn't come out until after the BE fell apart when immediately after Cuse & Pitt jumped, ND made their deal with the ACC and then WVU saw the writing on the wall and sold their services to the B-12.

This would be great for UConn and a lot of fun for college football.

I can't imagine that FSU or Miami would every sign on to a system that allows for their potential relegation. FSU was dead last last season.
