That's not a plan - that's suicide.

You're plan to get away from a bad television contract is to leave this conference and head to conferences that pay less and have far less exposure. (Yes, when you factor everything in, we're basically with the Big East in terms of revenue.)

And getting "creative" with scheduling would mean about five home games a year vs directional Louisianas and zero leverage for home and homes with anyone of note.

And good luck recruiting when the best bowl game you can offer a recruit is the Nelson Muntz Lemming Bowl against UMass.

If you think that every alternative is suicide, and we know that staying the course is suicide, then what is UConn doing? How does the school justify the spend?
 
By your definition of program suicide, every school not already in the p5, is in the same boat. How does any school justify the expense?

We all know things are bad, but we're no worse off, than anyone else not currently in the p5.

We have one chance to get to the P5 and that's by sticking it out in whatever you want to call this purgatory.

It's not happening in five years and it may never happen - but if it does, this is how it happens. We do this until we run out of runway - no choice.

The Nelson plan isn't a plan. It's a tantrum.

It is like working in a corporate setting. The management job that you desire will someday come open and there is some competition with your peers for the promotion.

All that you can do is do everything that you can to be in position,,,,develop an excellent work reputation, stand out from the pack on merit, etc.

The vagaries of the workplace will still play in....somebody's golf buddy, a fraternity connection...but still, all that you can do is to be positioned.

I think our chances of getting called up were better as a football independent and member of the Big East, but that call had to be made two years ago. I think there may have been some ways to improve revenue within the AAC, but the sun is setting on those too.

This Big 12 situation may be our last realistic hope of getting out. Holding off 12 more months beyond this hoping for a miracle with the Big 10 TV deal is justified. Waiting 10 years for the next ACC deal is not.

Companies do desperate and creative things to survive all the time. The ones that don't, don't.

Some recruits might like playing UMass five times a season. Less travel.

It's isn't a matter of every alternative being suicide (although most would be), it's that it can be argued that none would offer a better opportunity at what is required to land in a P-5 conference, which is demonstrating that we can consistently field a competent football program at a P-5 level.

Here's the thing, we don't know that. You are stating your opinion as fact. The benefits of AAC membership (vs football independence) is that we will have opponents who play at a decent level willing to make the trip to Rentschler Field. If we went indy we would have three home games a year.

Justification is that currently it is a better alternative than giving up altogether. If it becomes more difficult to maintain an athletic budget, decisions will need to be made. That's life.

I can't figure out why I spent 2 pages arguing with people that think that staying the course will result in a better outcome than it has to date.

I have been a season ticket holder since the first game at the Rent against Indiana. I was just waiting for this particular line of stupidity to marinate a little.

If you want a big job, you have to prove that you are worth the big job. Hanging around accounts payable making $65k a year is not how you show you are the best candidate for CEO.

UConn is contentedly sitting around making $2.5MM a year in the AAC. Why are we worth $20MM+ in a P5 league if we are only making $2.5MM a year now?

Your Independent idea SUCKS....say what you want...it SUCKS; and it IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!! Look at UMASS like someone else said as a prime example. I'd rather see UCONN join the MAC before going Independent. And that's not gonna happen either.

Called up to where? Your plan is to take football down to nothing and hope for a Big East invite? You think a conference of religious private schools is going to invite a large public scientific research school? They may, but it's as big of a stretch as building up the entire university go P5 standards, trying to earn an invite. Yet, what's the purpose of trying to get into P5 conference? What's the purpose of any university spending money on big time athletics? It advertising. It's trying to get a broader area to attract high level students from. Schools are so competitive right now, they need any advantage to get them to enroll. Right now, football is they way the big, public universities are getting them in. Alabama's ranking has risen the past few years as more and higher quality students from out of state have enrolled. Why? They never thought about Alabama until they were winning on tv. Rutgers has seen a spike in students from the Big10 region since their invite was announced. Good students that raise the standards. Right now, football is the advertisement.

You are correct, companies do desperate and creative things do survive. The issue, many times they don't work. They just fail faster, especially when the plan is reactionary and isn't particularly thought out very well. I have yet to see how your plan is well thought out.

With all the useless nonsense BULLS**T you have put into this thread and on this site about going Independent, going back to the BE and dropping football when you know it won't happen with the amount of $$ that was invested into the program facility wise....add to that ALL the other useless nonsense BULLS**T you put on here in general...you call a question about whether you are a season ticket holder or buy single game tickets from UCONN a "particular line of stupidity"? There is another one for the useless nonsense BULLS**T column! Like I have said before Nelson...step away from the pipe and stop smoking that K2...it has clearly affected your brain!

Walk me through how Herbst goes to the state and asks taxpayers to fill a $20MM hole in the athletic budget. How does that discussion go?

I don't know...I don't do her job just like I told you I didn't do Warde's. That's why she and Warde are paid the salary's they get paid. I am FAR from living in a fantasy land...VERY far from it. If anyone here is living in a fantasy land it is you!

I hate to break it to you but the big east is dead. The party is over. There are no big east glory days to return to. You still assume the collection of small catholic colleges will welcome a large land grant public flagship university like UConn into the fold. Even if they did, I can't imagine anything suckier! Basketball *might* be ok in the long run, but I see it withering on the vine, too. Independent football scheduling would be worse than ever. They only bill Georgetown as a marquee game because they have history of being good a million years ago. They blow and so do most of the other schools in the conference. Seriously. It's over. Gavitt AND the big east are dead. RIP.

This argument will continue to go around in circles until exit fee money runs out and/or the AAC contract is renegotiated. Right now, we are trying to get into a P5 conference and have the funds in place to wait. When the funds run out, some decisions will need to be made.

My concern is the comments from people like Fishy that show little hope of movement anytime soon. He is very confident we aren't moving in the next 5 years and my presumption is that he has that opinion based on something he's been told. Otherwise, I don't think he'd choose to be so negative on this subject. Hopefully, everyone is in the dark except the decision makers and his opinion is based on bad info.

If we really aren't going anywhere for the next 5 years, some exploration of creating a better, tighter East/West conference with less dead weight does seem like a good idea. There has got to be a better configuration that will result in more money per school.
 
"suicide" = blame the victim. After being abandoned in a desert, you can argue about the best path to water. But there's no point in yelling at your mates that they're committing suicide by taking the highway.

Not to mention that 1985, which was 30 years ago (gulp!), was the last time an old Big East team (Villanova) that does not support D1 football won a national championship. UConn passed the Big East Catholics on the court about 2 decades ago and UConn does not want to go backwards.
