The deal was more than fair. They turned it down. Now the majority that turned it down did better - but for that group of schools the offer was plenty fair.

Disagree but hindsight being what it is, I wish that we had taken it.
 
The Eastern Conference, by not being being formed, became the moth's wing beat in Siberia that ultimately caused the damaging winds over Hawaii.

The foundation of conference realignments IMHO goes back to 1981 when Paterno's vision of an Eastern Conference did not materialize.

In 1991, when the Big East transitioned from basketball to a football/basketball conference, it did so without Penn State who had joined the Big Ten in 1990. It might have been a different landscape had the Nittany Lions played in an Eastern Conference.

Penn State leaving independence for the Big Ten and the formation of the Big East hurried the end for the last southern independents...VT joined the Big East for football in 1991, Miami joined the Big East in 1991, South Carolina joined the SEC in 1992, FSU joined the ACC in 1992.

And away we have been to the races.
 
I think a rekindle of the PAC taking UT, TT, OU and OKS would help UConn.

The PAC will be stronger in fb this year, and perhaps the reality of adding 3 more strong fb teams enamors them.

Actually, Penn State inquired about joining the Big East (it was Paterno's first choice) and was rejected because of their poor basketball program. PSU was already in talks with the Big10, but some feel they would have gone to the Big East.

the first time the Catholics screwed the pooch......it was pretty evident watching the 30 for 30 Requiem for the Big East who voted no,

This is not crazy. BYU may actually prefer to be football only. UConn and Cincinnati bring the most firepower in hoops.

If we're taking the Dude seriously - major IF - who's the other western team? Boise? That would make sense, and would give them at a numerical layer of insulation if Texas or Oklahoma bolts (allowing them to stay at 12+ and keep a championship game, just like the 2011 addition of Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC at a time when Florida State and Clemson were looking around).
 
Yeah if the WCC would take Boise like they did BYU - it actually does make sense.

Makes so much sense why would they bother with anyone else?
 
The Sundays thing is a really, really big deal for BYU. The Big 12 basketball programs rarely play on Sundays anyway, but BYU does not want to play even one Sunday a year. This is why the Pac 12 was a non-starter. Anyone who has done business with that part of the country knows that Sundays are family time. Would BYU pass up a Big 12 invite over a couple of Sunday basketball games a year? I don't know. I do think BYU would be fine with a football membership though.

Boise will take what they can get. The problem for us is that two very high caliber football only programs may solve the Big 12's CCG problem.

I believe MH on this. Doesn't mean it is a done deal, but I feel relatively confident that the Big 12 is at least considering that structure.

To get some eastern schools for WVU which is now on an island. And don't forget that WVU is on the expansion committee.

The schools he mentioned are Cincy/UCF from east...BYU/Boise ftbl only

Seems to me their media partners might not be willing to fund hundreds of millions of additional dollars just because WVU is lonely.

MH actually had Memphis and Houston in front of us too. If Warde loses on a 4 team expansion to the Big 12 where any of Boise, Memphis, UCF or Houston are picked in front of us, he should be escorted from the premises the day of the announcement.

BYU and Boise as football only members will partially pay for themselves by folding in their solo deals into a B12 TV contract. Both are big names in football that will create a lot of great matchups for TV. Cincinnati and UConn are a bit different. Both bring good winter programming, which both Fox and ESPN care about, and UConn provides access to the New York market, which ESPN is smart enough to see that they are losing to the BTN.

I don't know if the math will work though. I kinda think that if the math doesn't work for UConn here, it won't work for UConn anywhere.

There is no reason to add Houston or Memphis. Both are in crowded markets and neither really even places on fan radar for football no matter how good they are. UCF has a 76 year old coach and is located in a resort town with a low wage demographic in a broader market where even the #3 program, Miami, has trouble keeping fan interest.

To me if they get Boise and BYU as football onlies they don't need to do anything else at the same time.

Good thing it's the Big 12 and they screw everything to holy hell.

Boise and BYU solve the CCG, but they can't do a network without UConn and Cincinnati. It may be that they can't do a network with UConn and Cincinnati.

In regards to fan interest when Memphis is "good." A month ago Memphis passed last year's TOTAL season ticket sales. Memphis also averaged over 40,000 attendance in the mid-2000s. That should happen again this season ... at least.
