New Student Tailgating Policy (Shocker- It Sucks)

Whats the student lot like? Tone is bad, and some of the rules seem terrible, but if the lot was resembling x-lot during spring weekend i guess something had to be done

It was about the same

Ok, so here’s my thoughts:

A. WHY is AD Dave sending this out directly to the student body - couldn’t there have been someone else in the school this could have come from?

2. If he REALLY wanted to score points w/ the students and get them pumped again about football and coming to The Rent he’d be out there in the lot with them flipping burgers week 1!

C. I know the tickets are now free - which is great, but even with that this will hurt attendance in the Dog Pound for sure. When you see this kinda stuff come out it’s almost as if they’re trying to screw over Randy and this program and force them into going to FCS to save money, and giving up completely a few years down the road once the P5 scheduled games they have run their course. I give us 2-3 seasons if the losing continues before we start seeing tarps up in the upper deck at The Rent and one end zone.

Some of the rules prohibit what is already not allowed in the Rentschler General Population. So the e-mail could have just been a "friendly" (Should have been friendlier in tone) reminder.

I'm wondering how they can enforce it, without ges.ta.po tactics.

- Hard liquor has been mixed with and in juice, water, or soda bottles for eons.

- Kegs are not allowed in the General Population at Rentschler. It is a general violation.

- The third bullet looks to be aimed at common source punch bowls of sorts. At floor parties in the late 90's we used a trashbag lined 25 gallon Rubbermade container.

- The 4th bullet seems to be aimed at floats. Other than a shelf coming out a trailer hitch, I do not recall trailers being allowed in General Population.

The final 3 seems like overreach.

- The no standing in or on truck beds seems to be a bit of overkill. That's what they are for.

- I guess the no glass rule is to prevent it from being used as weapons in a potential fight, but also a popped tire can ruin a person's night.

- No Pets? Is this really a problem? Are pets allowed in school or the dorms (because they weren't when I was there)? A guy on the floor below me housed a ferret in his room, but was in direct violation of Housing and he knew it. I knew a few people who had fish as well.

On the other hand, what if someone needs a trained personal service dog (not emotional support. Actual service animal)? I believe it is illegal to substantially interfere with service animals.
Re: beds of trucks...WHY DO YOU THINK THEY CALL IT TAILGATING?!?!?? I understand the concern of some 19 yr old girl dancing and falling out and breaking her neck. If they’re not allowed up there they can’t fall from there.

Are you agreeing with me? I can't tell.

Maybe the the broader focus of should be the level of intoxication of whomever is dancing in the truck bed.

I'm interested in how these regulations are going to be enforced and what the consequences will be. Is it zero tolerance? Are they immediately whisked to County before they can get the Brinkmann out of the truck bed? This and the "no pets" one are just an odd things to make a rule against.

Alas, I am not too interested. I'll be cooking and consuming bourbon in Blue Lot.

I’m agreeing with you. I have no idea how they will enforce a lot of this or if the fuzz will bother. Maybe they should offer a post game no rules rumspringer tailgate for those who actually go to the game

Didnt get a chance to read anything yet, can someone confirm White Claw Seltzers will still be allowed?

You can get cocktails in a can now. Cape Line I think? Still not super high alcohol content. You’re going to see a lot of 4 Loko I bet

New 4 Loko <<< Twisted Tea

Worst football team in the country and they're creating new ways to make sure they attract less fans...

There is nothing wrong with trying to keep students from risky behavior due to excessive alcohol use. I remember a woman sitting near me in the seats at the Rent -- she looked older than a typical student -- who spilled her beer on my jacket. She was so under the influence I think she was manic.

Oh my God, drunk girl spilled beer on you. So glad you survived.

Following past on-campus, alcohol-related student deaths and resulting lawsuits, simply proactive CYA. Perhaps easily issued with a wee bit more subtlety by legal or Dean of Students' representatives, but plain and simply a no brainer in hyper-litigious 2019.

As an alumnus with some age on me (but no grey hair yet), and someone who I think has been to enough college football games around the country to see other venues...my one observation is this — why is it always so hard here?

That is the one thing that always strikes me about Connecticut.

I am not going to say the rules are buzz kills. People need to have safety first, and Alcohol consumption is a huge problem, especially with younger people (I AM SO OLD).

It just seems like the town, state, school struggle with young people, crowds, and big events. Can they just go to other venues and see how it is done? The team has played at this venue for over 15 years. Why isn’t there a natural cadence to the day?

The tone of the letter, I thought, was condescending btw. Benedict didn’t mean it that way though, he just wants people to go to games, have fun and be safe. Students are adults, they don’t need a lecture though.

Towns, state and by extension the school, seem to treat the fans as a hassle in this state IMO. I think they should take a more customer-oriented view of the situation. Customer is always right, serving the customer etc.

Letting the customer have fun but keeping it safe. Instead, it seems like the students, and even a lot of other fans are treated as a hassle.

This venue should have sprouted an organic tailgating experience that students/alumni/fans are used to. That is what keeps people coming back. My experience as a student, then come back 5 years later, should be the same.

How this hasn’t happened in 15 years is beyond me.

Instead, every year is different, and the customers seem to be a hassle, as opposed to the life blood of the event. This is a CT thing, not just UConn, but UConn does put on the biggest sporting events.

Outside of the Rock Cats/Yard Goats...who puts on a great experience with any scale in this state? Xfinity can be a train wreck. Rentschler struggles even on small events.

XL? Don’t get me started.

I tried to read through this and was confused. What they are doing to the "student lot" sucks but how many students even go to that lot tailgate?

What's stopping them from parking in the normal lot and tailgating with the rest of the fans? Thats what we did in college (graduate in 2014) and seemed to work just fine...

Travelers is pretty well done

Perhaps but 4 Loko's are still 14%. One can getting you feeling right will always be their staple.

As long as you have no taste buds left! Reminds of the old Haffenreffer Malt Liquor (affectionately known “Green Death”) - except Private Stock tasted a tad better.
