New Student Tailgating Policy (Shocker- It Sucks)

Make the student lot the visiting team fans' parking.

Make C,D,E and F a combination of young alumni and current student parking.

Why are we isolating the students in the first place?

If we’re going to be saddled with this awful off campus location, there should be every effort made to replicate an on-campus environment.

Instead, they’re trying to replicate East Rutherford for some godforsaken reason

lol f this school. UConn has no social scene anymore. I wouldn't recommend UConn to any prospective students anymore, this is just further proving my point.
Lol, if you were recommending UConn solely based upon the tailgating scene at the Rent, somehow I think that we'll muddle through without you.

I know I must be missing something here, but I don't see this as a big issue. At a university designated area at a university sponsored event the university is providing rules of conduct. That's the way it always been. Students can either abide by them or, as we did, work around (ignore) them. Don't like the new rules, set up your own designated "student lot" by parking together. Geesh they didn't even make it a dry tailgate, which they could have if the aim was to provide a venue for the vast majority of kids.

I agree with @zls44 100% that issue is largely one of tone. The use of "wiping out" is idiotic. Doesn't anyone beside Benedict read these things. Emphasize what you are trying to create instead.

For those of you who say "now you will never get kids to go the games, because they never go in the stadium anyway" I shrug. We didn't build the Rent so undergrads could get drunk on a runway. We built it so that alumni could get drunk on a runway, uh I mean, so that we play at D1 (aka BCS, aka FBS) college football.

Those of you are always looking for something to bitch about, congrats you've found another thing, but I see this as largely a non-issue.

I think the notion was create a place for students to congregate so that it would be less of pro stadium feel.

If that was the notion than the school’s instinct, unsurprisingly, was wrong.

I feel like it was more to keep the students out of sight, out of mind.

From 2016: Newly-Designed Student Tailgating Lot

In an effort to enhance game day for students who prefer to drive themselves to the stadium, a new student-only parking lot has been created. Located adjacent to the student bus area, UConn students can now park in a student-designated lot for only $10 per game (a $5 savings off game day parking). Students who take advantage of this lot will note its location is significantly closer to the stadium -- compared to game day parking, is a shorter walk to the student entrance (Gate C) and will have a unique student-centric tailgating atmosphere<<

Fair concept but it has turned into a liability.

It's just more of the same BS. UConn is a certified no-fun-zone. The schools night life and social scene is abysmal. You can have more fun at westconn nowadays

students bringing pets to games - has that actually been a problem in the past?

I heard this complaint back to when I was in school. It was horsesheet then, I'm sure it now as well. That said, you know better than I do. How is "fun" being stopped?

...you can't have parties. The police show up around 10, fine you $1000, get you put on probation or if it happens more than once you can be suspended.

You used to be able to walk around carriage and Celeron. Can't do that anymore. Hunting Lodge Rd got shut down, too.

I don't think these restrictions are that bad. The tone is a little strange, but I wonder if there was a specific incident that caused this, like a fight or something.

Off campus parties? Is that UConn or Mansfield police?

Oh I said on twitter this is 100% litigation management and nothing more. It just a shame because this county is really becoming an absolute tedious nanny state bore. I have been doing some international travel lately and it’s interesting and really refreshing to see other 1st world nations still believe in personal responsibility. I’d long those countries and short us. We are spending an inordinate amount of resources in this country (ie waste) on belt and suspenders non sense and paper to insulate from a casino style legal system. It’s a big drag on the economy and it’s making us dumber.
Love the long/short market reference

UConn because they will suspend you if the police come to your house for a party. And UConn pushed Carriage and Celeron hard to create a guest policy and increase policing.

Because they hate the students, apparently
Suzie's biggest legacy. Hopefully the new President doesn't show such disdain for the students.

That seems problematic to me.

Yes it's a major issue. It's one thing to get fined by the town, it's another to have to go in front of an arbitrator or honor board and beg they don't suspend you because you were just trying to throw a party.

Suzie caved to the townies like @Stainmaster because she wanted to get buildings put up. She basically gave them whatever they wanted with no care for the students.

I knew it was @Stainmaster's fault. It always is.

Hunting Lodge Rd got shut down, too.
That road brings back a memory. My uncle once owned some land on Hunting Lodge (back in the late 79’s-early 80’s) on which he planned to build some off campus apartments for students. Problem was he needed a sewer permit. It was not easy to obtain. One night he got a call saying he could have it for $50,000! His answer was a tougher equivalent of “no way”. He never got the permit. The land laid dormant until after he died. Not sure what happened after that.

Some of the rules prohibit what is already not allowed in the Rentschler General Population. So the e-mail could have just been a "friendly" (Should have been friendlier in tone) reminder.

I'm wondering how they can enforce it, without ges.ta.po tactics.

- Hard liquor has been mixed with and in juice, water, or soda bottles for eons.

- Kegs are not allowed in the General Population at Rentschler. It is a general violation.

- The third bullet looks to be aimed at common source punch bowls of sorts. At floor parties in the late 90's we used a trashbag lined 25 gallon Rubbermade container.

- The 4th bullet seems to be aimed at floats. Other than a shelf coming out a trailer hitch, I do not recall trailers being allowed in General Population.

The final 3 seems like overreach.

- The no standing in or on truck beds seems to be a bit of overkill. That's what they are for.

- I guess the no glass rule is to prevent it from being used as weapons in a potential fight, but also a popped tire can ruin a person's night.

- No Pets? Is this really a problem? Are pets allowed in school or the dorms (because they weren't when I was there)? A guy on the floor below me housed a ferret in his room, but was in direct violation of Housing and he knew it. I knew a few people who had fish as well.

On the other hand, what if someone needs a trained personal service dog (not emotional support. Actual service animal)? I believe it is illegal to substantially interfere with service animals.

I have been out of the usa for going on five years now. I miss some things but this post makes a lot of sense too.

Btw, I assume by "first world" you mean Europe/ have been to Europe? Because I have to agree with this. I would say the ideal country (though no place is perfect of course) would be Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands or parts of France. Maybe Finland, especially for the education which is tops in the world or way out there in New Zealand. Perhaps even Ireland but that is more of a stretch (gorgeous place though). Many of those countries have crazy cost of living, of course but with a local salary that would be remedied and even considering some problems still existing, they just have the best quality of life for me. I have been to most of those aforementioned countries and just in general felt more....Not sure how else to put it, free in my day to day life. But even in other countries in Asia and Latin America I have noticed some of what you say, believe it or not. Less of a hassle for some of these types of things.

Any way, I digress too much. The rules seem like a joy kill/buzz kill, for sure. I think students are creative, they will find a way to have fun. I remember, especially as an 18-20 year old, my friends and I and, well, tons of UNI students always liked finding ways to "stick it to the man" a little (or a lot for some students) and I don't think much has changed since I attended UNI. In other words, I think these current students will find their way to enjoy tailgating too...Or I can hope for the long term sake of the (popularity of the) fball team.

Soooo...love me some UConn football....love a tailgate and more than a few beers. I’m an adult now, I like to think I’m responsible. Been a college kid, remember not being responsible but was always respectful....

That being said...

I also worked EMS...I’ve worked hundreds of large scale events from concerts, to fairs to football games. I’ve taken dozens of highly intoxicated patients into the ED who have been so drunk they’ve bought a tube! (Intubated) I’ve had to deal with hundreds of drunk balloon knot kids who can’t handle there booze....spit on, punched, kicked and puked on. I’ve seen young girls passed out drunk that have been sexually assaulted by other drunk balloon knot guys!

I don’t think it’s asking a lot to say....hey kids stick to beer and wine! Help keep it in check a little bit....have your fun but be responsible! We all know that most of these kids go without even intending on going into the game anyway! Is it that big of a deal!? They didn’t close the student lot...

Yes, I am referring to many of the countries you are referring too in Europe. My observation is that say whatever you want about politics, at a basic level personal responsibility (ie don't fall off that cliff/ladder/sidewalk into the ocean/ground/on coming bus) is where it should be, on you to not be an idiot. We keep moving the goal posts towards zero responsibility.

I mostly agree. As to the rules, it's not really very different than the rules that apply at many concerts and pro events. The risk of a head injury from a drunk person taking a dive from a truck bed is real.

Lawsuit, Underage Drinking Test Liability Of Kraft, Gillette Stadium

I have a completely different POV regarding the case you linked.

As for dives off objects, its simple - no diving...but dont be so ridiculous to tell me I can't walk the back of my flatbed pick up. That's ridiculous. Diving = bad, walking back of pick up = my business.

There is no hard liquor at the Rent? Really? Another reason I guess why I never park there. Love a bloody mary at brunch before a noon or early afternoon game. Am I gonna bring them premixed? Hell no. No one ever stopped you at the Aircraft Club.

This is just for the student lot, I believe.

I think it is just in the student lot. I don't drink a lot of beer anymore, but beyond the late morning whisky (or whiskey, depending on the style), I've had either a bloody or a screwdriver before almost every game.

My guess is to cut down on the chances of inexperienced students getting super drunk real quick without realizing it.

Whats the student lot like? Tone is bad, and some of the rules seem terrible, but if the lot was resembling x-lot during spring weekend i guess something had to be done
