New PAC-12 Forming

I don't believe it's anything but a rumor right now but CR just does the opposite of what makes sense. Programs will leave the AAC and Sun Belt just to join a G6 PAC conference. We'll see who bites.

I wish someone intelligent on the matter could explain why this MWC/Pac 12 split happened. This will go down as the stupidest in a long line of stupid realignment decisions by college presidents.

If the PAC2 could have the best 6 of the MWC + Gonzaga for no cost, that would have been an obviously great call. That wasn't close to what happened, unfortunately for them.

I agree. You don't want San Jose State but you want Texas State? Seems silly. Strength In numbers.

No cost? They spent tens of millions to do this.

because the MWC tried to extort WSU/OSU

They've had to part with the money in the form of paying schools exit fees. There had to be a better way to do this than how it played out.

Every person has to play the hand they are dealt in life. The PAC 2 teams had a pile of exit fees, and the MWC was clearly the 5th best football conference and 6th best basketball conference, with similar schools in size and geography, and very little competition from anyone in their geographic footprint. The conference had fun rivalries that fans cared about, and it was the only conference remaining west of the Great Plains.

The logical move would be to combine, try to get a better streaming deal in the next few years, and establish a hammer lock on the G5 CFP bid. Instead, they started a pissing match with each their conference partners, blew the PAC 12 exit fees to pay the worst schools of the group fines that were created from a contract that the PAC 2 had signed a year earlier, and now there are two runt leagues that are not meaningfully better at football or basketball than the other mid majors.

Ask the MWC who essentially felt they were entitled to all or most of the PAC 12 buyout money.

It doesn't make sense to have both the new PAC-12 and the Mountain West in existence, just like it doesn't make sense to have Conference USA in existence. They only maintain their technicalities of existing as conferences because so many FCS schools have moved up to FBS.

The G5 have had so much upheaval in the last few years that it's impossible to know what their true media rights value will be going forward. Look at the American. Their current payout is based on the fact that Houston, Cincinnati, UCF and SMU were in the fold and not North Texas, UAB, etc. The next media rights package will be corrective in nature for them. Same with the Mountain West who are losing their top revenue producing schools to the new PAC-12. Same with Conference USA, who has almost an entirely new membership since their last media rights package. And maybe part of the loss is offset because the value of college sports increases with time, but they are still going to be hit pretty hard when that market correction of the actual value of current members takes place with the next media rights packages. This is why Memphis and Tulane need to know what the PAC-12 value is and they need to know what the current value of the American is with current membership before deciding to jump or not.

Gets them in to Texas market and central time zone.
Being predominately PST was a big prob for the PAC.

First choice would’ve been Memphis and Tulane but that didn’t work out.

The more I think about it, I suppose it makes a lot of sense for Texas State. It would join better college brands in the new PAC with OSU, WSU, Colorado State, Utah State, Boise, SDSU, Fresno State, and Gonzaga of course. It puts the PAC 12 conference in Texas geographically smack between Texas and UTSA. Texas State just beat North Texas in the First Responder Bowl. This helps differentiate from and perhaps elevate Texas State athletically over UTSA, North Texas, Tarleton, Sam Houston. It could be a real game changer for Texas State.

A full merger of the PAC 2 and MWC probably made much more sense and would have been just as good a conference, if not better.

Too much is made of this. It's Texas State. Central Time Zone folks I'm sure are going to make sure they don't miss any Texas State games.

It’s like saying if they added EMU they would own the Michigan market. But all they really get is Ypsilanti.

There are High Schools in Texas with a bigger fanbase than Texas State.

Sloppy language on my part. I wasn’t referring to the Texas tv market, but the Texas recruiting market.

Their ability to do so won’t improve, but won’t get any worse. It’s alll about $$ now.

I know it's Texas State but it is the largest member of the Texas State U System and would be the largest member of the PAC. It only joined FBS in 2012 with one season in the WAC and a member of the Sun Belt since then. Sounds like a mutually beneficial move. Two 8-5 seasons in a row with 2 wins in the First Responder Bowl.

This is just JY's take on it

St. Mary’s would be a good addition. Keeps their Gonzaga rivalry. Good West Coast basketball. More presence in California.

What are the teams in the ‘possible’ column.

St Mary’s, utsa ?, and No Texas?

-> The two remaining Pac-12 schools have agreed to a media deal for the 2025 football season that features one established partner and two new ones. The CW once again will take a leading role and broadcast nine of the 13 home games for Washington State and Oregon State in the fall, with CBS and ESPN — yes, ESPN — showing two games each. <-

-> The terms of the 2025 agreement were not disclosed, but it’s likely to follow the framework used for the Pac-12’s broadcast arrangement with The CW and Fox for the 2024 season. That deal was heavy on linear TV exposure and believed to be worth approximately $1 million per game. <-

Also mentions the idea that the SEC and B1G may expand again or form a super league. Not sure if that is just conjecture or something with credibility. There have been some Utah to B1G rumors lately that many have laughed off. Maybe not crazy?
