New Defensive Coordinator - Billy Crocker of Villanova

HCREv1.0 ran quite a bit of 5 DB base to counter spread ooponents ... probably resembling more of a 4-2-5
 
I'll admit that I am not familiar with this hire. What I am familiar with is HCRE's track record in hiring (see Todd Orlando). He's bringing in a young & innovative coach with an excellent track record. That's good enough for me. Now let's roll!

Yes of course it's a private school, and so is not entitled to any regular financial assistance, but so is Yale, Harvard and Columbia, and tell me that the CT state government didn't just give state support to a another private enterprise called Sikorsky Aircraft, to stop it from leaving the state at the last minute. State support for any private enterprise can come in many different forms to help that private enterprise achieve it's goals. Now of course the chances of the state of PA ever giving some kind of support for Villanova to upgrade football are slim to none, but who knows, anything is possible.

What was your point about Yale, Harvard and Columbia?

Yes and IIRC, not long before the Fiesta Bowl, I read that RE was planning on visiting Gary Patterson at TCU to learn about his (4-2-5) defense, which had been among the best in the for about a decade at that time.

As RE's defense's here normally had a DE who was built more like a LB (whether he was or was not referred to as a 'bandit end'), the 'husky lb' was a hybrid safety/linebacker and as you stated he often played a Nicole set, I believe some adaptation of the defense RE played here, mixed in with what Crocker ran at Villanova will be what we run. Considering RE priority on tap control, I would expect to see more 4-2 fronts than 3-3 fronts but that should be easy to accommodate, especially as we will have quite a few 4-3 ends who had been listed as LB under the prior regime.

This is what excites me about this hire as well. Young and innovative.

A perfect follow up to my thoughts!

It will be interesting to see how the new defensive staff utilizes the current roster. I have always liked Carrezola's gap discipline and Stapleton's ability to make plays in space ... but I'm not sure the current roster possesses the speed of a Trevardo Williams or Lindsey Witten.
 
Is Crocker going to be the DL coach? It would seem to make sense but I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere.

Looks like not assigned specific position guessing if running his system probably ends up helping out wholley and cox with safeties and linebackers a bit on different assignments and coverages

They guy probably has a track record of taking kids and coaching them up. It's what we need. The defense regressed this last year. To give up almost 90 points to Powerhouses East Carolina and Tulane was an embarrassment.

Edsall has been a classic bend but don't brake defense coach his entire career.

I have no idea how this will play out. No one does. We may get a preview during the spring game. But it will be fall practice before we really know.

I really like this hire. Young coach with a track record of success. His base might be the 3-3-5 but I'm sure he'll employ multiple looks. After what your fans have endured watching on both sides of the ball over the last 3-4 seasons, you deserve some coaches that will at least to put an entertaining product on the field.
 
Seriously, the Kraken needs to be released on both sides of the ball. It should be attack-mode on both sides, especially on defense. There's a fair amount of talent to do a bit of damage with the right schemes. And I'm assuming this staff won't be timid or stingy about making necessary adjustments, either. Teams aren't winning respect and championships in this sport playing conservative, patty-cake ball.

I agree, but it's a players' game. Let's hope the players are as enthusiatic as we are.
 
It will be interesting how the coordinators theories hold up over the season with Edsall who is more conservative and basic.

I don't know about that.

I think Edsall wants to win above any particular scheme. I think our conservative RE1.0 had more to do with having RBs and a good line than overarching philosophy.

I'm sure we won't be high tempo sitting on a lead or blitzing but that's more about giving us the best chance to win.

(Sitting a lead - do you remember that???)
