For BC and Syracuse this place in most ACC conference sports would look familiar.
Why not both?It is actually amazing if you look at where UConn has went compared to the other schools in the ACC since the original Big East breakup. I want to be in a P4 very very very badly, but wouldnt trade the success/championships for being those schools (pitt, Cuse, BC, WVU, etc.)
Boston College has already finished dead last in football and women’s hoop.
They have an excellent chance of gaining the trifecta this week in basketball.
It will never happen. We know this. But those 4 former Big East programs (cuse, pitt, bcu, nd) could maybe save themselves by joining the new Big East. The football independents could form some type of conference if the NCAA let them but again, never happen. From a bcu board and some stats are outdated already, but a complete bust

I have to believe moving to a southern conference has at least something to do with their failures. at least recruiting wise. If it was strictly mismanagement, it would be a coincidence that all four programs went south, so to speak, at the same timeTheir issues are just mismanagement.
I don’t think cutting their rights revenue by 80% is going to make them smarter.
It really is mismanagement. Think about this. DeFilippo fired/pushed out 4 relatively successful coaches, 2 in football (O'Brien and Jagodzinski), and 1 in men's (Skinner) and 1 in women's basketball (Iglese), and BC has never recovered. Add in a President who really doesn't care about athletics (but is leaving soon), and you have the recipe for BC's athletic collapse.I have to believe moving to a southern conference has at least something to do with their failures. at least recruiting wise. And, they need to re-energize their fan base with a geographic rival just 80 miles down the road.It really is mismanagement. Think about this. BC has dug themselves a deep hole, but with the right administration (the new President?) and some good head coaching hires, BC has a chance to turn it around and become respectable in athletics.

Meanwhile - The current Top-4 of the Big East are all original 1980s members!A picture is worth 1,000 words - That's 47 conference game losses between those 4 schlameels

Most of the things Louisville is asking for in their letter (collective negotiations for TV rights, doing away with the NCAA) is going to leave UConn even more on the outside looking in.
Louisville has been overspending and they need to curb their spending. And, Louisville/state of Kentucky need to figure out how to pay for the Yum Center. BTW, the P2/Notre Dame would never go for pooled TV rights. Most of the things Louisville is asking for in their letter (collective negotiations for TV rights, doing away with the NCAA) is going to leave UConn even more on the outside looking in.
I have no doubt it is complete incompetence at bcu. It may be at cuse, pitt and nd too, I don't know. cuse seems to have really screwed up its basketball hire. but for all 4 programs to suck at the same time, there have to be other factors. and I'm not so sure bcu can turn it around. It is an outlier with no real success to speak of in 2 decades and NIL is a big issue. It really is mismanagement. Think about this. Cuse screwed up because the HOF coach stayed too long and the program started a steady descent, then they stuck to an in-house hire who, while a great player, hasn't been a great coach.I have no doubt it is complete incompetence at bcu. My theory is that kids want to play for certain schools and coaches but also certain conferences. Maybe they prefer to stay and play close to home. If a kid wants to run in the ACC with the likes of UNC and puke, why on earth would they want to go to cuse or bcu? They can choose wake, nc state, or play in virginia or florida. cuse and bcu have much colder weather and the travel really sucks. those 4 schools are in Big East and Big Ten country. Had the ACC included UConn and maybe 1 or 2 other northeastern schools (ruttie, maryland, nova), it would have changed the landscape and made a more regional northern wing.
Largely agree. I think Connecticut faces the same pressures to acquire talent whether it is in the P4 or not. Better to be starting from a higher floor. As things are, essentially, Connecticut needs to fundraisers up to the level of the P4 normal distribution before it can even begin to compete. Said differently, P4 schools have a floor that they start from. UConn is in the sub sub basement, economically, and needs to climb several flights of stairs before they even reach that floor.Until there is a well structured and enforcable spending cap (think salary cap) none of this is sustainable for anyone. Many athletic departments will spend whatever they need to and can get their hands on for top talent. That has set the stage for irresonsible spending which will continue until some run the coffers dry.
This is a full blown professional for profit business model run largely by folks that are not business people.......they are academics and ineffectual regulatory beaurocrats (NCAA).
btw, UCONN getting into the P4 may reduce the red ink but it will not eliminate it. I wonder if it accelerates the need to acquire talent and drives even tougher economics.
Correct. Boeheim was suspended and lost career wins because of his assistant coach. He then came back and (the school) announced a retirement date and the coach-in-waiting (many years) would take over. That retirement date was withdrawn and the assistant went to U Washington as HC. Recruits didn't know who was going to be the HC and for how long. Recruiting dropped off. Boeheim retired and Red got the job because he was a great player and a nice guy... and turned out to be a lousy coach. After SU loses its first game in the ACC tournament, he will be fired.Cuse screwed up because the HOF coach stayed too long and the program started a steady descent, then they stuck to an in-house hire who, while a great player, hasn't been a great coach.
