Vic has been a master at assembling formidable teams by leveraging his players' strengths and minimizing their weaknesses. This team will be no different. She is a very effective player doing the things she does well. However she is equally inept in other areas, specifically sagging off her man too much on the perimeter and any shot outside the free throw line.

Except Mississippi State plays more than most, as documented elsewhere. The cupcake speeches are old and tired. Everybody plays cupcakes. Everybody.
MSU played tons of cupcakes the last 3 years and still found it's way to 2 Championship games and an Elite Eight. Obviously something is gained in those games.
I don’t disagree. However this year similar to last season his steadiest backcourt consists of two players that are great defenders but with no range. Marquette was clogging the middle with them in the game. Against top teams that is going to cause serious issues. If MSU is going anywhere in the tournament A Matharu and/or Mingo-Young have to be able to give serious minutes if needed. Both are much better three point shooters.Vic has been a master at assembling formidable teams by leveraging his players' strengths and minimizing their weaknesses. This team will be no different.

I didn’t take it as anything in particular she did wrong as much as he needed a steadier hand.I was really surprised Matharu didn't get more minutes tonight. After taking a couple bad shots Vic sat her the entire game essentially.
Eh, UConn keeps losing to teams with worse OOC SOS teams, so maybe it doesn’t have that much impact?Except Mississippi State plays more than most, as documented elsewhere.
You've found one way to spin it. Another way would be to note that MSU keeps losing to teams with much better OOC strengths of schedule.
2017 nonconference SOS:
MSU: #80
South Carolina: #11
2018:
MSU: #32
Notre Dame: #2
2019:
MSU: #78
Oregon: #22
Haha that's funny. UConn has lost exactly 5 games in the past 3 years. Four of those were against teams that played better nonconference schedules or had higher overall SOS. The lone exception was MSU in 2017.Eh, UConn keeps losing to teams with worse OOC SOS teams, so maybe it doesn’t have that much impact?
I was talking about in the NCAAT, which was why I said “keeps,” but Geno’s tough OOC schedules didn’t help him win any more close NCAAT games then Vic’s weak schedules did.Haha that's funny. How many games has Mississippi State lost in the past 3 years?
As I edited my post above to reflect, last year Geno had a weaker OOC schedule than all 3 of the teams he lost to. And Notre Dame's OOC in 2018 was the equal of UConn's.I was talking about in the NCAAT, which was why I said “keeps,” but Geno’s tough OOC schedules didn’t help him win any more close NCAAT games then Vic’s weak schedules did.
I would say MSST looked just about as battle-tested against ND in 2018 as UConn did, despite Mississippi State playing a far worse OOC schedule than UConn, and being a far less talented team.As I edited my post above to reflect, last year Geno had a weaker OOC schedule than all 3 of the teams he lost to. Last time I checked, this was a UConn board where our team plays a real OOC, always had and always will. It is also a team that has made 12 FINAL FOURS in a row, regardless of players graduating, that’s 3 full graduating classes of players. You want to tout how your team with McCown made two Final Fours. Let’s see if MSU can make another Final Four without McCowan in the next four years, let alone 2 or 3.The cupcake speeches are old and tired. Everybody plays cupcakes. Everybody.

So yes, as long as other teams come on this site and tout stats against pathetic teams and take umbrage when these facts are brought to light we will point out flaws in your logic. Don’t like, go to your site and complain but don’t be upset on here that your feelings are hurt.![]()
Vic Schaefer won his 200th game tonight at MSU in his seventh season. 200-56 is his overall record at State. Coach Vic Schaefer becomes the second-fastest coach to reach 200 wins at an SEC program!
In contrast I would love to have A Mitchell on this year’s MSU team. Her strengths, rebounding, toughness, and defense, are greatly needed.I think she is a strong shooter when she actually takes good shots.
She is in no way comparable to Vivian's who is the total package. Miss St keeping her stretched on the wings every play in the corner essentially.
She is. not elite or great defensively but she has improved a lot there. Miss St uses her essentially as a spot up shooter. Sometimes her shooting is good enough to take over games, at other times its not there at all. She is a good little player from a offensive perspective. She will never take over a game with her ball handling, defense or rebounding. But she will provide you with some scoring punch.
Would pay a lot of money to have her at LSU. She would be the only kid on our team that could shoot anything 5 feet out from the basket.

Marquette shoots almost 50% from the field (twos and threes) out-rebounds State, is playing at Home, State shoots 35% from the field (25% from three point land). However, State shot 87% from the FT line on the road. That is impressive for a relatively young team. If Marquette was going to beat State, tonight should have been that opportunity to cash in but they did not. 28 turnovers by Marquette was another big issue for them as well.
I see some of you on here love to criticize Coach Schaefer and the Dawgs and that is okay. You are entitled to your opinion. At the end of the game it was a big W for State. This team grew up some tonight and will continue to get better as the season moves along. They learned tonight how to scrap their way to a win on the road. It is easy to win when the shots are falling, not so much when you are throwing up clunkers. When shots are not falling you have to persevere and that is what the Dawgs did tonight.
That's funny, because "constant and pointless" pretty aptly summarizes the posts we got last year from MSU fans (a) crowing about how they would thump Oregon in the first game, (b) giving excuses about why the first loss to Oregon was a fluke, and (c) crowing about how they would thump Oregon in the rematch.Really, just chill out. I'm in a thread about a Mississippi State game. I'm not all over your board touting anything. The strength of schedule is a constant and pointless drumbeat IMO, so I said that. Your response is over the top.
Yeah, when a poster completely devolves into a generalized tantrum it becomes completely unproductive. I completely understand this is UConn’s board and respect the hypersensitivity of some posters on the main board. However I’m a little surprised by it here.Putting the screaming, yelling and bleeding over the OOC scheduling stuff aside
They may not make another final four in the next three or four years, or they may make some. That said people don't understand how hard it is to win or attract top talent to a school like MSU in Starkville. The job the coaches have down there is truly remarkable and can't be understated.
Ah, how we love to cherry-pick our evidence. As @Lorcan posted yesterday, UConn had quite a few cupcakes back in the day (from 12-13):
“#164 College of Charleston
#161 Wake Forest
#236 Colgate
#292 Oakland
#255 Oregon”
