I don't really care one way or another. I just don't think she has yet become the player she was made out to be. When she left there was talk of her being a future star. Vic himself compared her to Vivians.

I think she is a strong shooter when she actually takes good shots.

She is in no way comparable to Vivian's who is the total package. Miss St keeping her stretched on the wings every play in the corner essentially.

She is. not elite or great defensively but she has improved a lot there. Miss St uses her essentially as a spot up shooter. Sometimes her shooting is good enough to take over games, at other times its not there at all. She is a good little player from a offensive perspective. She will never take over a game with her ball handling, defense or rebounding. But she will provide you with some scoring punch.

Would pay a lot of money to have her at LSU. She would be the only kid on our team that could shoot anything 5 feet out from the basket.

Loved this game. The only game that we've played so far that might not be available to rewatch - yet it's the only one worth rewatching.

I wrote that it was gonna be a tight - and it's no surprise because..... it's Marquette. There's two opponents that just always puts up a mean fight against us no matter who they have, historically speaking they recruit the type of players that we just don't match well against. Marquette is one. Missouri is the other - and the way Marquette played tonight reminded me a lot of Missouri last year.

And I don't care how ass Missouri looks this year. Will still have a lump in my throat and the ghost of Sophie Cunningham will reverberate in my mind anytime I see us near that apprehensive gold and yellow.

She is not a Victoria Vivians but my opinion she should be starting instead of Jackson. Rickea has lots of talent but she is just not comfortable either on offense or defense. To me it is a matter of confidence!

Based on how she looked at the end, and how Rickea looked in the end.... I'd say it's still up in the air whether Rickea starts or AEH starts. Both look inconsistent.

Agree. Further Vivians and Espinoza-Hunter are two very different players. The most surprising part of her development this season has been her increased stability. Neither she nor C Bibby are overly athletic. However they both play hard and won’t kill you with dumb plays. I also like how both are developing their midrange shots and drives to the basket.

Vic Schaefer won his 200th game tonight at MSU in his seventh season. 200-56 is his overall record at State. Coach Vic Schaefer becomes the second-fastest coach to reach 200 wins at an SEC program!

Bibby isn't overly athletic but she is a great rebounder and is steady defensively outside her shooting. She brings much more to the tablet than just her shooting.

Vic owes this one to the palms he greased in the NCAA to get Danberry eligible. She's been the difference maker by far here.

Danberry had 20 points, 4 assists and 7 steals. That's a ****load of steals in one game. And that doesn't even include all the other turnovers she caused with her defensive pressure.
She is a very effective player doing the things she does well. However she is equally inept in other areas, specifically sagging off her man too much on the perimeter and any shot outside the free throw line.

Lotta unnecessarily harsh criticism in this thread.

I was impressed with Marquette. They have a number of crafty players, a number of good shooters and they play hard and rebound really well. I think they have a chance to be a tourney team.

State is just young and inexperienced and it shows, as expected. Glad to see Rickea get some huge buckets down the stretch. I was actually mad Vic had her in at that stage, but she proved me wrong. Still has a lot to learn, but the ceiling is high for her.

It's worth noting that the 5 on the court for the majority of the 12-0 3rd Qtr run that swung the momentum to MSU were Carter, Danberry, Bibby, AEH and Taylor. To me that's MSU's best 5, but Vic is definitely going to rotate a lot. Our freshness down the stretch was probably the difference.

I'm pretty darn surprised this game was close. Some takeaways:

1. Mississippi State is probably overrated.
2. Feasting on cupcakes doesn't prepare a team for real games.
3. Feasting on cupcakes at home doesn't prepare a team for real road games.
4. Marquette is exceeding expectations after losing all 5 starters. I'm going on record now to state they are definitely better than 9th in the BE.

Solid preseason game. Carter looks like McCowan 2.0....raw offensively but a monster on the glass (21 boards).
Danberry has been excellent too.

I think the Stanford matchup will be a good one. Neither team looks all that formidable but both have talented teams and good coaching.

I'm excited about this possible matchup.

I like Carter a lot. She rebounds very well. She is still raw offensively. A lot of similarities to McCowan at this stage in their careers. Big thing now is finishing near the basket. Because she is so big teams will be very physical with her inside. its now a matter of finishing with contact near the rim and using that physical advantage she has. She missed so many bunnies near the rim tonight. She is going to fill up a box score once she finally gets the finishing down.

Rickea struggled for most of this game but did do some great stuff to end the game. I find she lacks confidence right now. You can see the flashes but she gets a little indecisive at times.

Marquette is definitely much better than what people expected them to be. MSU is young and inexperienced and it showed tonight. MSU is most likely not a top 10 team at this time. Maybe in a couple months but there is a lot to clean up right now.

M. Taylor has to step up offensively.

Sigh..... always so harsh.

If you'd just left out the first sentence, we're eye-to-eye. Without Danberry, I'd struggle to think how lopsided that score would've looked tonight.

Vic has been a master at assembling formidable teams by leveraging his players' strengths and minimizing their weaknesses. This team will be no different.

The cupcake speeches are old and tired. Everybody plays cupcakes. Everybody.

MSU played tons of cupcakes the last 3 years and still found it's way to 2 Championship games and an Elite Eight. Obviously something is gained in those games.

The lack of rebounding outside of Carter is very worrying. AEH getting criticism here, but she's actually the 3rd leading rebounder with 2 (yeah, 2).

Jessika goes 4-13 and I don't think she took a shot more than 5 feet from the rim. Rough night shooting for State.

Except Mississippi State plays more than most, as documented elsewhere.

You've found one way to spin it. Another way would be to note that MSU keeps losing to teams with much better OOC strengths of schedule.

2017 nonconference SOS:
MSU: #80
South Carolina: #11

2018:
MSU: #32
Notre Dame: #2

2019:
MSU: #78
Oregon: #22

I don’t disagree. However this year similar to last season his steadiest backcourt consists of two players that are great defenders but with no range. Marquette was clogging the middle with them in the game. Against top teams that is going to cause serious issues. If MSU is going anywhere in the tournament A Matharu and/or Mingo-Young have to be able to give serious minutes if needed. Both are much better three point shooters.

Biggest difference is this team's foundation is a bunch of inexperienced freshmen and sophomores while past years MSU had very veteran senior teams.

But lets be honest. Vic typically schedules much weaker OOC schedules compared to most teams and especially for a top 10 program. MSU will be really really good by the end of the year but they probably won't progress as fast playing weaker competition.

I agree that were probably overrated right now. They found a way to win, which is important. This team is searching for offensive chemistry. Several players taking bad shots or playing one on one. The rebounding is a concern.

There is a lot of talent on this team that hasn't played together, hasn't been challenged, and is inexperienced. A lot to clean up but a lot to feel good about going forward. This year will be a learning year. Vic will probably be pulling his hair out most of the time.

I was really surprised Matharu didn't get more minutes tonight. After taking a couple bad shots Vic sat her the entire game essentially.

I didn’t take it as anything in particular she did wrong as much as he needed a steadier hand.
