I just rewatched the Geno Show. What I missed the first time was this from Culmo -

"People are ready to blow their brains out and want to kill the players"

They must be the same people out on ledges and jumping off bridges. Message to Culmo- a little hyperbole is fine but ya' ought not be accusing fans of being homicidal.

Culmo is just brown-nosing. Geno recently delivered a small rant about how fans and the media deal with his players after a loss, and Culmo was trying either to further ingratiate herself with Geno or to see if she could get him to say something similar to her, for her interview. On his blog, John Altavilla lends some welcome perspective to Geno's little rant -- (http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn...conn-womens-notebook-20120111,0,1667784.story)

Gee guys I didnt take any offense to anything said. It was all in good fun and kidding around. Lets face it many of us lose our minds when UConn gets beat and some think the sky is falling.

Tony - Obviously I disagree. Look at Culmo's straight faced delivery and her tone of voice. It sure as heck didn't look like she was kidding around. Your post above about people losing their minds or thinking the sky is falling was basically saying the same thing, albeit with a better choice of words.

It still begs the question - how does a critical comment equate to "wanting to kill all the players" or jump off a bridge or losing one's mind? Are fans not allowed to be anything but "loving" without being called out by Auriemma? If he felt it was a "lousy loss" why shouldn't a fan be entitled to feel the same way and say so?

FWIW I didn't feel that it was a lousy loss and I don't think I posted anything at all after the game. I had no real problem with the game, just with Auriemma's comments.

Seems to me, if fans are entitled to their opinions, so are Meghan and Geno.

Indeed they are except Auriemma gets paid a lot of money as a coach and press/fan scrutiny is part of the job. Didn't you see the part where he reminded us all that he makes lots of money while we sit at home?

Indeed they are and I'm not questioning that. I just wonder why he feels it is so necessary to diss people that really are fans.

Clearly, she was speaking metaphorically and hyperbolically. We read some of those posts right here on the board and, apparently, their email box was stuffed with them, too.

They said they get letters and emails from fans... They've said similar things over the past few years after the handful of losses they've suffered. I would think it gets old because it's almost to the point where they have to explain how they possibly could have lost a game. I get it because every time they lose I get the same ridiculous comments from family, friends, coworkers...and I get really irritated by everyone thinking it was an epic failure on uconn's part and not that they were simply beaten by a better team or a team that played better on a given night. I just shake my head and think to myself...WTF...Geno and Meg just shook their heads and let it fly.

i find that interesting - not bad or good, just interesting. i've never written a letter or email to Geno or Meghan or CPTV to be read on the Geno show. for better or worse :)confused:) i get my info on the Boneyard, or from the various blogs or articles from the horde...

i know i post a fair amount on the board (but i also post some on the men's board and to a lesser extent the FB board), but there are many fans who post at least as much if not more than me on the women's board. my point is that i'm wondering just who it is writing these letters to Geno, Meghan, etc. it certainly can't be someone from the BY community could it? or maybe it is - who knows?

Gonna walk out on the thin ice here - just a sampling of the BY this year shows some remarkable trends, some that I personally find upsetting. We're awfully quick to judgement. I've thought about this, and many of us have not only abandoned the long-term view, and the short-term view, but we've abandoned the snapshot impression. I guess it's a "tweet" impression now. If a player has a poor minutes in the first half, we judge her inadequate. If the team has a poor last few minutes, some of us start wailing and gnashing teeth. If Geno flashes a little attitude, or dissappointment with refs/fans/player, we throw him under the bus. If a poster puts something up we don't largely agree with, they'r stupid/racist/lying.

So much of it comes down to impatience and self-centeredness (sounds nicer than selfishness). Fewer folks seem to be willing to extend a little time, a little slack, to look at the big picture instead of 15 seconds of Youtube.

Folks, there's an awful lot of the big world to enjoy, savor - there's a word that is at odds with the commercial currently in rotation that refers to events as "being so 18 seconds ago". Patience. Patience, patience, patience. With yourself, first of all, and with others.

That's todays sermon from the wine keg.

Wouldn't it be wild if one of the regular posters in here was actually Geno? Who would it be? Icebear? Kibbtzer? ericsandiego? Certainly not Tonyc!

And a fine vintage of sermon it is, pinot.
I do not think this characteristic is new. It is something seen in the game threads from the past but to my eye, pinot, it is certainly becoming more prevalent today. Geno is exactly correct when he notes that folks expectations are all out of whack. Teams, even great teams, lose occasionally. It happens for many different reasons.

Clearly this is a true and insightful comment from Icebear, but this provocative comment from MC is one of those instances where MC (and the listening public) would be well served by a little more professionalism, poise, public speaking skill, and careful use of language by MC. This is one of those CPTV family statements where many of us wince, not quite enough to endorse an alternative to CPTV, but yet where we want to send that family member for some quiet time in the corner to think about how they could better play in the sandbox. GA has the authority and position where he is allowed to be provocative, but to me that should not be MC's role as the host or game commenter, even if it is one she finds appealing. More balance please, MC!

MC is a very close family friend of the Auriemma's and a former player. And you expect her to be impartial?

I immediately thought this was in reference to an ugly tweet Geno received after the ND game. He told the sender to keep their opinions to themselves unless they had something good to say. Geno's never tweeted anything like that before so I knew it was over the top. Interestingly the person who sent that tweet "no longer exists" on Twitter.

A banning? Or a homicide? You decide;)

This is exactly the nature of the relationship. I am glad for it on the Geno Show, less so during game coverage when other things should take priority.

Well, if she is going to fill the role she has with CPTV in a more professional way, then I think she does need to step out of that previous life situation [during her on air time]. I am not saying she needs to be completely impartial, but her rant and language about what fans were way over the top and provocative. Ready to blow their brains out - - that is a sad statement in the world of violence we live in. Look at the way Kara Lawson used to handle Tenn/Uconn discussions when she first started on the air. Now she is much more balanced - she grew professionally. Maybe MC can't grow beyond where she has been to see a bigger picture - - kind of sad if that is the case. She should watch people who are very skilled in the art of the interview - - someone like Charlie Rose, and learn. Apply it to her own world.

But Meghan does not have that same role as Kara or Charlie Rose and never has.
