I was very pleased by the effort the team put in today. They never gave up.

It must have been very stressful to play without many of the starters. Starters score points and influence the flow of the game. They also stretch the defense and make it easier for the team to score. The lack of movement triggered turn overs and hence fewer shots at the basket.

Nevertheless, with valiant effort, we kept it close. I look forward to players getting healthy so they can build on the accomplishments of the beginning of the season.

My thoughts, the team played well. Like others have stated, I loved the way the team competed, and they did not give up. I am proud of these ladies and the coaching staff. Tough loss but regroup and get ready for the next game. Keep your heads up, ladies. We (fans, friends, and alumni) believe in you and support you. Win or Lose. We got your backs.

A couple of points, I don’t go into games with preconceived notions about what is going to happen. Yes, who is available to play matters greatly but once the ball is thrown up, the game becomes the game. If I am a Uconn player I am very disappointed because as it unfolded that was a very winnable game.It doesn’t matter what might have happened had Uconn didn‘t have players out or if the game was reffed differently or trying to take solace by saying if we play again we win.
Senechal’s 3rd foul was a killer, as was UConn’s inability to find Meyers in the 2nd qtr. The unforced TOs were a killer. Particularly galling to me was the ridiculous foul call on the 3 pointer late against Edwards. Refs keep rewarding players for a most un-basketball move, kicking their legs forward on a jump shot, a particular pet peeve of mine.
Anyway, ready made excuses aside, if I played for Uconn, I couldn’t feel anything but that we gave one away.
And yes, I agree the team played hard, very hard but you play to win and I think regardless of the injuries, the game was there to be had.

Definitely win with Nika. First of all the defense on the perimeter and when they bring the ball up, secondly the assists (Ines had 2), thirdly the court presence and command of the offense and fourth, our forwards (counting Lou here) had to handle the ball and hence 25 turnovers to their 5.

For Ines, she makes certain freshman mistakes over and over. which I am sure will be corrected soon. The first is that she turns her back to the basket when dribbling which means she is no longer an offensive threat and cannot see the half court. Secondly, she throws one handed slower push passes off the dribble which may have worked for her last year but with the bigger, quicker and stronger American players it doesn't work at all and forces the receiver to come out of their spot to get it. Third, she dribbles far too much. Bring it down court, make your first pass safely and quickly, and then repeat if necessary. A lot of this is strength too and will change.

For Caroline, the turnovers (6) are difficult to understand from a player this heady. Many of the turnovers were either unforced in her case or because they forced our forwards to make decisions and that hurt us. She is a favorite of mine and I just hope her focus/judgment if that's what it is returns soon.

Lou was definitely tired today. You could see it in her face. I think that is the simple answer. Fatigue makes you foul. It also affects you on offense.

Aaliyah had a great game and Aubrey was huge on the glass with 15 boards but 3-9 from the field. She had the lowest FG% on our team with some forced shots. Ayanna is improving with each game and Amari is getting there slowly.

My biggest takeaway is the scheduling. That's the second week in a row we played at home against an easier team( Princeton is one compared to our other OOC games) on a Friday and then had to play a ranked team on a Sunday away after a plane ride. I get that we are mimicking the NCAA Friday- Sunday games but all it has done thus far has made us beaten up, weary, and bedraggled, and given us two losses. The losses are almost irrelevant this time of year but I don't see how the one day rest games in December are going to help in late March.

The real positives are the growth of certain players in the midst of this cycle, especially Ayanna, Amari, Aaliyah and Aubrey with Caroline still getting there. I have no doubt in the long range success of this mission but it is tough watching at times while knowing what would happen if we had Azzi, Nika and Dorka out there. A week off is sorely needed, no pun intended.

As a coach you never want to diminish a win and the effort by your team. Credit to Maryland that they made key shots down the stretch. Other teams might have missed them. Still, there is a way of praising your team while acknowledging that the other team was much less than full strength. Geno would have found a way to say that; not so for Brenda.

The ironic part of today's erratic officiating is that you can't blame the head of officials. She assigned two final four refs & and a WNBA ref, but they called the game like an inexperienced team with makeup calls & inconsistent whistles.

Geno did another great job, and hats off to the young women who played!
If there is such a thing, today was an decent loss,,,
UCONN had too many turnovers, but the 2 starting guards weren't playing!
UCONN was outscored by 7, 'at Md.' with our 2 top scorers on the bench!
and UCONN outrebounded Md with our starting center out!

That was a tremendous effort. Our ladies really left it on the floor. Several of the players out there were injured too and still soldiered on. To be tied in the 4th quarter was more than we could have expected using an extremely inexperienced PG and a bunch of players not used to playing in this combination. Ayanna showed some nice things too. Her minutes against a top team will help her grow.
If there's a positive to these injuries it is other players are getting a chance to step up and experience these competitive games...........hopefully they will be the better for it as the season progresses........I expect Ayanna's numbers to increase and her fouls to decrease as UConn heads toward the big tournament.....

Some thoughts on the Maryland game:
  • I was thinking of an old movie that I love: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN!!!!!
  • With a badly depleted lineup, this was going to be a nearly impossible task for the Huskies today against the 20th ranked Terps. Without Paige, Ice, Dorka, Azzi & Nika, UConn had no justifiable right hanging with MD.
  • But somehow, incredibly, this UConn team did hang around for the entire game despite too many turnovers, Lou getting into foul trouble and MD heating up from the arc.
  • UConn outplayed MD in the paint, dominating the boards 46-23 and getting much of their scoring inside. The killer A’s; Aaliyah, Aubrey and Ayanna all showed up today and they kept the Huskies in the game.
  • Ines looked great in the first qtr, making several nice plays and showing remarkable poise. In the 2nd qtr, the going got a little rougher as she committed some turnovers. I would like to see Ines shoot the ball when the defense backs off. I think that confidence will come in time.
  • After a shaky start, Caroline picked up her play and made an impact. She needs to cut down on turnovers. But otherwise we're starting to see glimpses of the player that carried this team for much of last season.
  • I am incredibly proud of how hard UConn competed today! I know it’s so very difficult when so many Huskies are out with injuries. Be patient everyone. The time will come when the walking wounded will be back and no one will look forward to playing this UConn team.
Indeed. The statistical profile of this game is similar to before the current injuries occurred: 1) 21 of 31 buckets were assisted, 2) 5 players in double figures, 3) PG took a minimum of shots, scoring 2 pts, etc.....

The differences are: 1) 21 TOs, 2) Nika-Azzi tandem missed on perimeter defense, 3) Nika missed as the defensive point, 4) 3pt accuracy below their standard (as one expected with Azzi out), 5) Assists from PG down (as expected)

But what an effort by everyone! I didn't think Geno was going to throw Ines right in there entering the "dragon's lair" where the team that earlier beat Notre Dame resides. But he did and despite not having much game time with the other four who started, she acquitted herself very well indeed.....despite having the only chemistry foundation built during the minutes against Princeton and then practice on Friday and Saturday.

I don't know how long NIka and Dorka will remain out or how long it will take for Caroline to be fully herself again but everyone works to raise their game, no one whines, and they continue to hold their heads high!!

Bravas to all!

Also, how did they lose? TO's, the inability to get TO's, empty possessions, and UConn's inability to control the arc. 22 TO's coupled with MD"s 31 three point attempts and 6 TO's meant a lot of shots for MD. Can't wait to see these guys down the road.
Yeah, Nika might've made a difference...

Officiating is terrible in all sports. Except for MLB umpires and THEIR own strike zone and FB officials not being able to get PI right, none are worse than most BB refs. Home court is not necessarily an advantage which is wrong in itself, but it too often is. Witness today. Blocks and charges seem to be a whim but usually in favor of the home team.

Walking is another that drives me crazy. Invariably if you try to fake while stationary you walk, especially if you're wearing a UCONN jersey home or away yet you can take 3 steps while driving (both teams) and the refs can't see it.

Oh, and that over-and-back call near the end was ridiculous. from my vantage point her only foot on the floor was clearly across the line when she caught the pass.
The walking calls were walking - it's subtle but still pretty obvious when you see it

Her second foot never touched the front court correct call

We will never know but felt if Lou didn't get into foul issues and was able to run the team instead of Ines we would have won. Not a perfect ball handler, Lou is taller and makes good decisions. Ines was open many, many times and didn't take the shot-never would happen with Lou. Ines tried had but is a poor passer, often missing open UConn players. She is often slow to the ball with many of Maryland's shooters hitting 3's when Inez didn't get out on them in time. Game was much closer than I thought - gritty effort by every member of the Huskies.
If Lou makes good decisions, she wouldn't have had 4 fouls, Ines is an actual PG while Lou isn't she is a SG. They both had 3 T/O's and Lou is a 5th year player while Ines started he first game ever, is a Freshman, and had only 1 foul and the same number of T/O's. Oh and she is only 17 years of age.

I was being a little sarcastic with the rule bit. Before and after the Texas game we were told by posters on this board that UConn missing Paige and Ice was not the same as Texas missing Harmon because the UConn players are lost for the season and Harmon was not lost for the season but only for a few games.

It's okay to mention Dorka, Azzi and Nika.
OK. thank you for that and I understand the sarcasm.

So, I still like to know, maybe from someone who created the rule, why Paige and Ice are not to be mentioned when talking about injured players. Hopefully someone will respond.

True, it is encouraging. She is still not anywhere near 100%. Many of her TO's I would attribute to her not getting any rest. Geno needed a body and she is a trooper. Great job by her and all of the team!
Except that she had two turnovers in the first few possessions. I think it is more than just rest. She seems to not see the court clearly at times. I just hope it goes away like it did last year until she got injured.

Did you notice the end of the game when Geno congratulated Ines Bettencourt before joining the hand shake line? He realizes that she was put in a monumental situation & she competed to the best if her ability.
Without these injuries, Ines would have only seen action in blowouts & as short relief for Nika this season.
agreed these players getting this extra time now will be important come tournament time when fouls on the starters won't be so important!

1) I'm SO tired of the flopping. Sellers in particular.
2) Terrific effort to even stay close against a TOP 20 team away.
3) Losing so many starters just kills our team defence. Maryland had a record low turnover count it seemed and that wasn't just Maryland.
4) The opposing team game plan continues to be to shut down our shooters and LET Aubrey, Ines, Ayanna and Nika shoot. With even fewer shooters available this is an even better game plan. Somehow we STILL shot over 53%. This team has incredible offensive punch when the last players off the bench score at a 53% rate against a top 20 team.
5) We just couldn't defend like normal or get much in transition as a result.

Edwards can't continue to have to play every single square inch of the floor, both offense & defense. She'll be finished for the season with 3-4 more games at this pace. She needs help. Lou is like a wonderful old clock starting to run down at this point.
