Marquette Postgame Thread

UConn belongs in a tougher conference. Yes you can have a blow out in a championship game but nearly every year? There was nothing better than the Old BE.
Of course it would be great if they were in the ACC but they wouldn't let them in. Not a chance. And for more reasons than women's basketball. Let the rest of the Big East get better. It happened before and it can happen again.

If Marquette is the 20th best team in the Country, the women's game is in worse shape than ever.

South Dakota State has been in the top 25 all year. I'd bet big money on Marquette pounding them into the hardwood. And you can also bet they would at the very least give many of the top 25 a much much closer game than they gave UCONN tonight. DUFFY knows what she's doing. They are going to get better.

As I watched the post-game celebration and all the smiling faces, it made me certain that all of these players, including our injured walk-on, were very glad they chose to come to UCONN to play basketball, even if they are 1000s of miles away from home. This will be among their greatest lifetime memories. They sure all seem to get along unbelievably and this probably goes back to the COVID pods they were assigned to and the Mom's of each pod. As bad as COVID has been on just about everything, I think it probably made this team closer than they would have ever been in normal times. What a fun group to watch!

Congrats ladies and coaches and thanks for providing so many of us so much enjoyment! Now let's get #12 !

UCONN Women's Basketball belongs in a tougher conference. Maybe the field hockey team als

It isn’t. Big East should be called the Big Easy.
My how soon they forget. In the old BE UConn won 70 and 90 straight games and often went undefeated in conference play. The old BE was arguably the best women's basketball league for several years during the DT years and beyond until it broke up. If Geno continues to schedule as he does, UConn will still get battle tested regardless of the conference affiliation.

Go back a few more years:
09/10 Old BE 28
08/09 Old BE 39 (Louisville who we played again in the NC game and beat by 22)

Uconn's average margin of victory over the last decade against ranked teams (most of them OOC games against top P5 conference teams) up through I think 2018 was something like 30 points - the average against unranked teams was 40 points.
Just thought I would throw up Uconn all time records against the various conferences - this does not include this year but includes all the history from before Uconn was Uconn and before Geno. A lot of the losses date to pre 2000:

ACC - .800 64-16 - UNC at 5-7 against mostly pre 2000, Virgina 2-5, NC St 2-6 most pre 2000, and Duke 3-12 (Alana Beard years) are the only teams with more than 1 win against Uconn. The rest (includes Louisville and ND) 4-34 or .105

Big12 - .846 33-6 - Baylor 4-4 the rest 2-29 or .064

Big10 - .826 38-8 - Iowa 3-4, Penn State 3-9 the rest 2-25 or .074

Pac10/12 .778 35-10 - Stanford 7-11, the rest 3-24 or .111

SEC .767 56-17 - TN 9-14 the rest of the SEC 8-42 or .160 (Vandy at 2-6. LSU and SC at 1-8)

UConn Conference Championship games winning margins the past 11 years.
20/21 - 34 - BE
19/20 - 34 - AAC
18/19 - 21 - AAC
17/18 - 16 - AAC
16/17 - 56 - AAC
15/16 - 26 - AAC
14/15 - 14 - AAC
13/14 - 20 - AAC
12/13 - -2 (loss to ND) Old BE
11/12 - 9 - Old BE
10/11 - 9 - Old BE

Let it go! It's a song. Learn it. UConn is in the BE and they ain't leaving it.

Instructions from the bench for game management. It was late in the half and things had gotten a little helter skelter, so we settled it down to make sure we didn’t let Marquette get many more possessions to get much closer before halftime.
They were gassed. Marquette looked to be in great shape, and could run with us.

Then, now. Apples, oranges.

So Autumn is injured? Any particulars?

Added on - Since 2000 those teams called out above: UNC 3-7, Virginia 0-5, NC St 0-4, Duke 2-10, Baylor 4-4, Iowa 0-1, Penn St 0-7, Stanford 4-9, TN 5-10, Vandy 0-5, LSU and SC both have only played since 2000 so no change.

Uconn vs Ranked / top ten teams played:
2000 16-1 / 11
2001 10-3 / 9
2002 13-0 / 6
2003 9-1 / 4
2004 9-2 / 4
2005 6-7 / 9
2006 5-5 / 6
2007 9-4 / 4
2008 11-2 / 8
2009 11-0 / 6
2010 17-0 / 9
2011 15-2 / 8
2012 13-4 / 8
2013 12-4 / 10
2014 6-1 / 6
2015 13-0 / 6
2016 13-0 / 6
2017 11-1 / 5
2018 11-1 / 7
2019 6-3 / 5
2020 2-3 / 3

Generally Uconn plays 12+ games against ranked teams and 6+ teams ranked in the top 10. Not sure any P5 team consistently plays that type of schedule.

Defense has been unbelievably outstanding. Three tournament games and they gave up an avg of about40 pts a game. That is most impressive. All around great play from all, but as EricLA mentioned above, Evina does a lot, in the limited minutes she plays. Sometimes she gets overlooked.

The great 2010 team, which holds multiple NCAA records, gave up 117 points in the Big East Tourney. This year's team gave up 119, just under 40 ppg. This year's team outscored the 2010 team by 234-190.

Congrats to the team and staff for winning the regular season and tournament championships. No easy feat, especially this season.

Selena Lott - 2 points. Laura van Kluenen had 6 points on 3 - 13 shooting. That is some great defense.

The best was the post game celebration. The team was having fun. The smiles on their faces, especially Evina, Christyn and Olivia was priceless.

Per Carl, Christyn has been on the conference all-tourney team in each of her 3 seasons. Not too shabby!

Well, I asked for 3 things. No injuries, Geno happy, and a strong win spearheaded by great defense. I got my 3 things. Great game. I am happy. Everyone played very well. These young women GET IT. They understand and play the UConn/Geno system. Everyone played well. Paige,........is Paige and there is no one quite like her. She gets everyone involve. Then, quietly, there is Evina who moves around, rebounds and tosses a dagger when needed. She must be so pleased to be in a winning program. You can say a little about each one of them: Nika, Chrystin, Liv, Edwards, Mir, Aubrey, etc. Terrriifc..A TEAM! Look out, they are coming to the NCAA Tournement.
