She would have to win 3-4 titles at UConn to be in the conversation let’s be real. Simply getting to the final four isn’t enough.Take a good, long look at CC’s WCBB stats—each game, each year. Look at the cast assembled on her teams. Consider that every team knows what’s coming. Watch her play.
Now…image she’s wearing a UConn uniform throughout her college career and presently stands poised to carry her team past an undefeated SC powerhouse and into the finals, with a chance at a national title. Then tell me you wouldn’t be making a case that she’s at least in the conversation as GOAT.
Please don't leave Olivia Miles out of this discussion...she's unstoppable, has moves like Maravich, passes like CC and Paige, sees the floor, a team player just beginning her career. After watching Caitlin Clark have a 41 point triple double the other night Magic Johnson said that C.C. was the second best player in the history of WCBB behind Diana Taurasi..pretty high praise for DT coming from Magic
In my Opinion, jus 2 Players can ivalise with DT for GOAT of WCBB, Maya & BrennaPlease don't leave Olivia Miles out of this discussion...she's unstoppable, has moves like Maravich, passes like CC and Paige, sees the floor, a team player just beginning her career.
No one is denying she’s a great player. No one wants to anoint her as the GOAT either.Caitlin Clark so far in her collegiate career: 2,646 points (needs 16 more to break 1,000 for the season), 334 3FG, 86% FT, and 782 assists while playing 27 minutes per game. She's got one final four and now one NPOY award under her belt. People can try to down play her accomplishments as much as they want, but those are insane numbers, and she's the focal point of defenses while playing in a power conference.
She had way better players around her than Clark. But DT earned two NC's with a cast around her that was mediocre at best. This is not the first NC her sophomore year, but her junior and senior years.
Because if you want to be in that conversation at some point you have to put up the numbers, and being able to stay on the court is part of that. There are probably lots of Paiges in the history of sports - players with unbelievable talent but because of injuries never realized their full potential and thus we never even knew their names let alone saw them ascend to GOAT status. It's amazing to me that because of 2 years of injuries the "talking suits" forget how Paige Bueckers completely dominated WCBB as a freshman, pre-injuries! They don't even mention her in any conversation about the best in WCBB right now!
Granted she's been hurt but that shouldn't take away what she's capable of when healthy!
And last year when she came back not 100%, she led UCONN to the Finals of the NCAA Tournament!
My bad.Wilt won 2. Bill Russell won 11.
That's little better, yes not the sole. However, you said it shouldn't be primary. And that's wrong, it should be one of the primary criteria.Definitely winning titles should be an important criteria, Meyers7, just not the sole determinant, as I said earlier.
This post would be more appropriate in a few days (4/1).Please don't leave Olivia Miles out of this discussion...she's unstoppable, has moves like Maravich, passes like CC and Paige, sees the floor, a team player just beginning her career.
Not yet. Please don't leave Olivia Miles out of this discussion...she's unstoppable, has moves like Maravich, passes like CC and Paige, sees the floor, a team player just beginning her career.
Not most, Meyers7, some... if you watched them play, you might think otherwise. My bad.
Yea, and hence why most people think Russell is better than Chamberlain.
Primary means the chief criteria, and that's where we agree to disagree. I don't feel it should be the primary. There isn't one of the primary criteria...That's little better, yes not the sole. However, you said it shouldn't be primary. And that's wrong, it should be one of the primary criteria.
Those 3 are certainly in the discussion. But the idea that only an NC confers greatness on an individual in a team sport disregards so many variables in how a team wins games. If Mickey Mantle had played for the Cubs in the 50s and 60s and had the same kind of personal career he had with the Yankees he likely could not have made them world champs. While the NC teams of Diana’ Maya and Stewie might not have won without them, those players also don’t win without significant contributions from teammates. Iowa certainly has SC in the way as well. SC is probably better than Iowa no matter what Clark does. But she is one fun player to watch.DT, Moore and Breanna Stewart are ahead of Clark in my mind.
Those three can bring her team to the NC. Can Clark? BTW I am hoping Iowa to beat South Carolina and wins the 2023 NC .
Interesting comparison to those Cubs teams, cohenzone, especially because the Cubbies had a player in Mantle's realm, Ernie Banks, who was twice an MVP and yet couldn't get his team even close to a World Series. Those 3 are certainly in the discussion. Pretty high Praise for Caitlin IMHO.After watching Caitlin Clark have a 41 point triple double the other night Magic Johnson said that C.C. was the second best player in the history of WCBB behind Diana Taurasi..pretty high praise for DT coming from Magic
Sure there are. There are primary things (3 or 4) you are going to look at when determining GOAT status.Primary means the chief criteria, and that's where we agree to disagree. I don't feel it should be the primary. There isn't one of the primary criteria...
Yup. And Fergie Jenkins, who overlapped the great Banks , with his Cub six 20 plus win years in a row might be the greatest pitcher ever with that kind of record with those teams. The point being judging individual greatness in team sports by team success requires discounting a lot of things.Interesting comparison to those Cubs teams, cohenzone, especially because the Cubbies had a player in Mantle's realm, Ernie Banks, who was twice an MVP and yet couldn't get his team even close to a World Series.
You must have never seen Wilt or Marino play. Stats and championships are overrated when it comes to determining GOAT status, IMO. If you watched them play o er their careers, there could be no question as to whether Wilt was one of the very greatest, if not the single greatest of all time. Same with Marino. It’s hard to pick one goat just from UConn, with so many of the greatest players: Stewie, Diana, Maya and others. Also, the system and quality of players determines stats to a great degree. If Caitlin played on UConn, I believe she would be just as great a player, but on a team with other great players, I doubt her stats would stand out as much. Anyway, until someone comes up with one definition for GOAT, I will stay with what my eyes tell me. And if there is a starting 5 of GOATs, I’ll take Napheesa on my team.WRONG!!!!!! That should be, IS, one of the top criteria for GOAT consideration.
Chamberlain was great, put up crazy numbers. But never won anything. Jordan was great, put up crazy numbers AND WON things. Jordan is in the GOAT conversations, Chamberlain is not.
Marino was great, put up crazy numbers. But never won anything. Brady was great, put up crazy numbers AND WON things. Brady is in the GOAT conversations, Marino is not.
You HAVE TO WIN to be in the GOAT conversations.
To me this is an argument for why Diana is a GOAT and Clark not at this time, although clearly a great player. She had way better players around her than Clark.
Your opinion. Mine is closer to Magic. She is close to unstoppable and has great court vision and like Diana is worth the price of admission. Like Diana, she often has the ball in her hands and controls a lot of the way her team succeeds and what the opposition is forced to do. Obviously others are in the discussion, but she is not out of it either.
It's why I put Russ over MJ, LeBron, Wilt, and any others. My bad.
Yea, and hence why most people think Russell is better than Chamberlain.
No THAT is funny. It's why I put Russ over MJ, LeBron, Wilt, and any others.

Maybe Sheryl Swoopes is the best player of all time. She led Texas Tech to the NCAA championship in 1993, scoring 177 points in the 5 games of the tournament and 47 of her teams 84 points against Ohio State in the championship game.I think it’s a lot harder for one player to have an impact then on a basketball team but that’s just me.
