I agree on the pitching. Again, it was insane to be able to have had Corbin for solely money, but they elected to deal Sheffield for Paxson.

I also prefer Harper over Machado, but the hustling/dirty player are a bit overblown. As mentioned prior, Showalter runs the tightest ship in MLB and I don't recall hearing a ton of issues between the two of them. I believe it was maybe 2013-2017, but in that period the Orioles won the most games of all AL East teams.

He was 9th among 3B in dWAR in 2017 and 2018 was a lost defensive year since he spent it at SS where he was below avg. He's a very good defender, but he's not the defensive player he was in 2013 anymore. That's not coming back either. Still a superstar regardless, but the question will be for how long and does it align with the rest of the Padres improving enough to contend.
 
The guy is a really good player but somewhat of a head case
He's young enough and his numbers, in this insane world of salaries, merit a $30 mill per year area BUT for 10 years - that's way too much time.
Can't believe LA didn't ink him, just glad 'n Yankees didn't grab him
He would look great in one of my Cubbies uniforms but no way the organization was paying him for 10 years and no place at 1st or 3rd for him now
We'll see how he pans out in San Diego - should be interesting - being a west coast team we will hear very little about him
Congrats to Manny - that's a ton of money

I think Corbin is a flash in the pan so I don't really hate not signing him, but giving up Sheffield for a starter like Paxton also didn't make a ton of sense to me. I love CC but holding a spot in the rotation for him seems like a losing preposition
 
Baseball is a dirty sport. I have no problem with Machado, everyone’s just soft nowadays.

The $300 mil. deal tho is sort of interesting. Padres have a lot of young prospects and they’re trying to create a foundation with Machado and Hosmer. Worth a shot they’ve sucked forever.

There are a lot of injury concerns with the Yankees staff. I wasn't huge on Corbin either, but the downside was just money. Sheffield could end up being a solid starter for Seattle down the line.

He's obviously talented but I've seen enough to think he's a total flake, flakes don't tend to do well in NYC. Think it says something it was the White Sox and Padres vying for his services.

Paxton deal will end up being fantastic as long as he can stay somewhat healthy

That's fair about NYC. I'm usually a believer in talent over anything in baseball though. I think that MLB free agency is broken and that's why CHW and SD were the only teams in on him, more so than anything else.

Not that it’s broken, it’s just that large market teams are stacking pitching.

If he was going to the Patriots' clubhouse, maybe you do the deal because the elders would straighten him out. But the Padres? Nearly $50,000 per at bat and over $185,000 per game for a guy who hustles when he deems it appropriate. This is a guy who's in it for himself and fans will tire of that pretty quickly when he's being paid that kind of money.

For those who think statistics are all that matter, the best he's ever done was 37 HR (one every 17 at bats) and 107 RBI last year and he's already in his prime years. Other than last year he never had a year with more than 96 RBI's and only matched the 37 home runs one other time. Do those stats make him a superstar worth stupid money?

I would wager that a return to 3rd his defense returns. He wanted to play SS 2 years ago and trained the offseason to be there he was disappointed to be at 3rd that season

Hes played his whole career in the AL East and wanted to go to NY and loved butting heads with Boston. I think he would have flourished there.
NY could have signed him and packaged Andujar with a prospect or two and gotten a really good pitcher in return which have meant improvement in the lineup, field, and pitching staff.
As a Sox fan I'm happy they didn't get him. He is an asswipe though no doubt
This is basically Steinbrenner holding on to his millions or Cashman wanting to look like the smartest man in the room

These very long term, very high value contracts rarely work out for teams. This one may work out in the short term, which is maybe all the Padres care about.

MLB network just said Padres are still interested in signing Harper since they will have a lot of cost controlled players the next few years

The idea, I think, is to have in place a superstar to build around with players from the best farm system in baseball as they get promoted. Ideally, they'd have waited a year or two, but I guess they felt they couldn't pass on the opportunity to snag a HOF-caliber 26-year-old.

I have some concerns about his effort level and his body, but I guess it makes sense. The Hosmer signing made much less sense.
 
Yep the risk here is how much he has slowed after the knee surgeries. Screams that he is a player that won’t age well - but even if he starts to decline at 31-32 on paper it’s a good deal.

Wfan has been saying for a few days now Harper to the Phillies for the same. 10yrs for 300 mill. I follow the Phillies, my daughter lives there and we go to a few games great place to watch a game. They are trending up. Probably not good for the mets being in same division.

Agreed. Nobody has ever questioned his work ethic.... He dogged it at times but the guy plays hard otherwise. I don't know where the work ethic theory came from.

People are killing this deal but he is only 26 years old... Cano is older right now than Machado will be when is contract ends. The Padres system is loaded with talent and if they buy an arm or 2 they could be contenders within the next 2-3 years.

The opt out clause is sort of a wild card in this one. Be interesting to see him and Tatis Jr. together in a year or 2.
