It's not a new argument.

The argument has long been that the leak of the conversation was intentionally done to tank things before Yormark might be able to get traction working behind the scenes to get the votes. If Yormark couldn't get the votes, then the hope was nothing would've gotten out in the near-term (or in a way either party had to acknowledge the talks happened). The way it worked out, both UConn and Yormark ended up with egg on their face. The only hope of the move going through was for it to be fait accompli prior to it getting out.

Zanetto didn't do anything wrong... he was simply the tool that was used by his source to get the word out to where it would be checked and put out into the mainstream media (ESPN, local newspapers, etc). This in turn allowed both, the opposition in Connecticut (Senator Murphy, Speaker Ritter), and the Big XII media to jump out in front of Big XII boosters to get out there with their arguments against the move (the detractors, saying that the Big East was the better home; the Big XII media returning to their arguments against UConn football)

Bingo.

There was no malice; a reporter reported.

Cartoonishly stupid takes aside, Zanetto isn’t to blame, but the news breaking let the usual suspects get in front of the story.

Why? They need to have the Nebraska market locked up?? Or they just need to have our 6th best team??

Either it's a full merger, or they are going to cherry pick the teams that don't require a large amount of feeding. You would REALLY need to show me that Creighton fits the latter...
Creighton averaged 17k fans last year, 6th nationally. I think this basketball-only merger stuff is a fantasy, but Creighton holds their own and then some. BE is lucky to have them and vice versa.

Settle down, fella. I never said I was unhappy that they were in the Big East. You'd have to explain how it makes sense for the ACC to pay them $17 million per year (the amount the ACC pays ND for Olympic sports). If you can't, then you'll finally understand the problem...

Do you think ND gets $17M for its Olympic sports, or is there some additional amount thrown in for scheduling and other things.
If you breakdown ACC payouts, the Non football isn’t $17M for everybody. That is too high.

I’d think ACC nonfb is close to what BE gets.

Um, I said I think this talk of non-FB schools merging into the ACC is a fantasy. Besides us, teams to “cherry pick” that don’t need “feeding” at your stated price tag (it would never, ever be ND money) don’t exist. It definitely is not GTown. I guess we’re agreeing that all of this talk is nonsense, regardless of what Coach K suggests. K sees the writing on the wall when UNC is investing millions in football to assure its P2 golden ticket in a few years. Duke not paired with UNC is in trouble. Now Duke w/ UConn… nope, still not anywhere near the same.

If the offer wasn't at least noticeably better than the current 7 million per year from the Big East, then it wouldn't happen on our end anyways. So even if we call it 13 million per team, and staying with the fantasy of cherry-picking non-football teams, I don't think Creighton is in the top 4 or 5 of their Big East wish list...

But it makes sense to pay Georgetown that sum?

Oooooook.

Although I think there would be a "prisoners dilemma" element here.

If they gave us 7 mil a year and a place to play football then it wouid be a better deal than what SMU got. Of course we’d take it at this point.

Anyone that could go should go but I just see it becoming Big East 3.0 after a couple other schools leave in a decade. It'll end up a six team football league, and then we'll need to grab MAC schools to backfill to FBS. The basketball only schools will hate it like they did before and it'll cause a bunch of issues.

Creighton has certainly pulled its weight. The team performance and the fan base have been impressive. A merger is what the ACC whiffed on last time. The ACC tried to piecemeal it and the Big East teams floundered. A merger brings in the whole which is greater than the sum of its parts. Omaha is midwest. Creighton is better basketball than Nebraska. Marquette is better than Wiscy. Xavier can be better than Ohio State. DePaul God help us could be good someday. If the merger would make it the best basketball conference, even better to do it in the B1G footprint and attack both the B1G and SEC head on. Northeast, Midwest, Atlantic Coast.

Well, when it comes to realignment - this is my fear because hey see RULE#1 regarding realignment. They invite St. Johns, Georgetown, Creighton, Marquette Villanova and UConn*. But they tell UConn don't even think we will give you anything regarding football. In fact if you even broach the subject we will tear your invite up! ...and they would look at us as if we would need a large amount of feeding with regards to Football, regardless of the season we have had in football. Again to reiterate this is not what I want nor what I believe but this is the ACC. Again with realignment see RULE #1.

Hell, if that's our strategy I'd start with a phone call to the B1G and tell them we're willing to join for all sports at $7 million a year.

This is 100% of what is happened to the big east. Instead of sticking together, each independently is going to do what’s best for them.

Nope. Even in an unequal setup there are plenty of reasons.

Sone of them are utterly dead weight. And scheduling and so on.

I agree with you that there is a 99% chance the ACC and Big 12 conferences will move pawns around the chess board as they lose all their valuable pieces. I don't want to give the Big 10 or SEC credit for being smarter, they just happened to have larger fan bases at the right point in history when casual fans drove enormous value because of the linear cable model and ESPN.

College sports has stuck with the logic in your post for 25 years, and it is becoming a P2 on its way to a P1, and somewhere along the way will hit a doom loop tipping point where fans will stop caring and its ratings will mimic virtually every other minor league in the world.

If college sports ends with the kamikaze crash that I expect, the history of realignment will be studied in college strategy classes as another example in how the leadership at universities in the first decades of the 21st century had become completely detached from the basic rules and tactics of market competition.

If you think Creighton is the addition that the ACC can't skip out on or they would be "absolute morons", then we can't talk about conference realignment together anymore...
