They voted but weren't accepted. Still, Stanford and Cal were very happy because they were able to bolster their reputations for having high rejection rates in applications. SMU was just generally confused by the whole process.

Well played.

Eventually we will have nobody to play, and definitely no one to come to the Rent. It will be 1-2 bodybag drubbings on the road and 6 1AA teams in E Htfd.
The folks saying we are good as an Indy for an extended period of time are wrong.
This is the reason why we need to get into some kind of scheduling alliance. P4 conferences will increase their conference games due to media company requirements. It will be harder or harder to schedule going forward.

This is why we should explore some kind of scheduling alliance with the PAC-4 if such option is available.

I agree, the only conference I would not accept a football only invite to is CUSA. Once the PAC remnants start adding teams there should be a solid round of G5 reshuffling in the near future, hopefully something opens up for us. Getting a football only invite to the new PAC would be ideal.

If the Championships and the brand were this big then we wouldn’t be in this fix,

We’re about to get passed over for SMU.
SMU is still surrounded by people who believe they can purchase things like success, credibility and status. They could vey well be correct, time will tell.

Sometimes it takes money to make money and from what I hear, they have money.

It is amazing how many AAC fans this board still has.

Keep this in mind, SMU is a bigger school than TCU, and it has better academics, and more money.

I don't see why it couldn't cut into that market of kids that would otherwise go to these schools. It will weaken them all but there's nothing structural there to prohibit them.

They're both small schools with some wealthy grads, SMU has less undergrads and a smaller endowment than TCU. They're very similar academically, SMU probably has a slight advantage.

They're very similar schools with pretty weak fanbases historically.

If you're looking at USNews maybe similar academically but if you're looking at the strength of programs and departments and their reputations, it's SMU far and away

SMU would've been in the Big 12 way before TCU, WV, Cinci, UCF, and BYU if it didn't get the death penalty that killed it's program and stunted it's momentum for decades

Really? In SMU's heyday before the death penalty, they had a hard time attracting 30k fans per game unless they were playing Texas or Texas A&M. The poor fanbases at TCU, Houston, SMU, and Rice is why they were left behind when the Big 12 was formed.

BTW, SMU averaged 25k fans per game last season and they have ~7k undergraduates. What do they bring to a conference?

And SMU never would've had those good years without their rampant cheating. They sucked before it and they sucked after it.

SMU’s “momentum” was a direct result of the activities that earned them the death penalty.

They bring the Dallas market, although that's like saying BC brought the Boston market and Syracuse and Rutgers brought the NYC market. Also some inroads into recruiting in Texas.

With streaming however, schools will have to demonstrate there own media value down the road.

What really sucks is the university had no control over the actions by its boosters, coaching staff and university administration which led to the death penalty.
