Joey is going to have a really hard time getting minutes with the way the Big East refs let guards hand check and drape themselves all over offensive players.
Yes, in California and the rest of the West Coast it's a different game.

Maybe a rules thing? He looked fine on the bench and we went 8 minutes without scoring, that would seem to be Joey time.
Hurley basically did nothing to break the drought. He was just hoping hoping something will change. No plans

We struggle to shoot today (again), but keep our leading 3 Pt shooter on the bench? I guess Dan Hurley prioritized guys with poor shooting and passing instead today.

Joey is shooting 20% from the field since the first Xavier game, which was December 31st.

Feels like he's only played like 10 minutes since Dec. 31st too.

.-.
Because he has not really been useful since the very beginning of the season. His lack of athleticism, etc. is exposed and even if he's a better shooter than Alleyne or Diarra, he hasn't been able to hit anything consistently.

He’s a mid-major guy who got exposed in conference play.

Played really well against Georgetown in December and is like 25% on three point shots since. I don’t think he’s gotten to the free throw line since like Christmas and his perimeter defense is notably bad on a team where perimeter defense is already pretty lousy.
I don’t think exposed is the right word.. Let’s just say opponents discovered his contribution and prepared for him consequently he isn’t getting the good looks he enjoyed earlier. Credit Good scouting
Shutting him down pretty much limited UConn’s erratic offense .
It appears he was a bigger factor in our earlier success then given credit
for . 14-0 when he was a factor vs 6-7 . That spurt-ability we enjoyed earlier seemed to end with opponents shutting him down .
I wouldn’t be surprised if he shines in the NCAA tournament. Different rules .

Considering how much he struggles against physical on ball defense this isn’t the game best suited for him. Much rather have Diarra out there and it was the right call given how Diarra was able to get into the lane and score.
He scored one basket and had 4 points.

Joey hits one three and a free throw and he’s there. I get that Diarra is better on D but let’s not make the point that he was some X factor on offense.

Um, likely he doesn't. He had 3 points against SH last time. He has hit a total of 1 3 pointer in the last 6 games.

.-.
JoeyCis not a NBE player
But that being said, I will bet if he got 17 minutes like NA received he wouldn’t have zeros across the board

Joey Cantmakeatrey!!!!

I bought my Joey California sweatshirt a bit prematurely!

In order to go deep in the tourney we are going to need players like Joey C and others bench players to have good stretches - help win close games.

Joey C has really not been given serious minutes in quite some time. He comes off bench cold and never really gets the chance to get in the flow of the game - and hasn’t been impressive.

Dan Hurley is almost blindly loyal to some players and leave them in for long, long stretches, guess we’ll see if this an effective player rotation when the tourney starts.

The dump offs would have been much more successful if they were actually dump offs and not Mach 5 missiles from three feet away.

It was bizarre how many bullet passes were thrown from like five feet away today. One or two is a lot and I swear the team threw like 4-5 today, and not all from Jackson.

The team was also at its worst when he was playing. I’d like to see some minutes when Hawkins leaves, but when Hawkins leaves he also leaves a hole on defense, which Alleyne/Diarra fill in well enough.

The shift occured when Big East play began. But that wasn't his fault. That was the fault of the Big East refs who HATE Hurley!!!

Diarra's box score wasn't great but him and Andre played great games overall and were key for our run to put it away. Hawkins was our main (and only) scoring threat. Not many minutes for Joey C when your PG-SF are the guys winning you the game
I was going to start a Diarra appreciation thread. I was at the game and have yet to look at stats but I thought Diarra played great yesterday and earned himself a lot of minutes.

Agreed. Seriously thinking that the people dogging him on here didn’t watch the game and/or just want to argue

After watching Newton and Alleyne you bet. You scratch your head on Newton because on some days he becomes a good player then disappears like yesterday.

We aren't shooting well from deep and can't find a couple minutes to see if Joey might help. He already played vs Seton Hall and was on the court for 11 min with 1-2 from 3, 2 asst, 2 rb. That isn't awful. Posters are saying he hasn't hit the ocean in 2023, 6 for 24 is 25%, but the guys we did play were 4 for 22, 18%. I also think he does a good job getting the ball to Clingan in scoring position. I just don't understand a DNP for a kid that might be able to help. Try a 3-4 min stretch and see. Just like Carlton, and others, he gets a preconceived notion about a matchup and won't sniff it to see if it might work out.

Love Joey C but his role was and has always been as a microwave/energy guy off the bench to provide and offensive spark specifically from 3pt land. First half of the season he was phenomenal in this role. Since Gtown back before Xmas he has been 25% from 3pt land. He also a defensive liability. Im not ready to give up on him because I think he has some skills specifically as a PG (good handle, good passing) but he needs to get back to hitting 3pters again which is a major part of his role and be better on defense or he wont play much any longer.

I pretty much religiously defend Hurley on this board but I really think his treatment of joeys minutes in the Nova game changed Joey’s year.

Joey’s red hot. Great OOC stretch, coming off of the gtown game where he pretty much single-handedly won the game for us. Hurley barely plays him.

Reminds him he’s a role player on this team. Shakes his confidence. Haven’t seen the same guy since.

I was at the game yesterday and I can tell you the energy on the defensive end alone provided a big boost to UConn. Remember, it was him and Andre that ended up getting UConn the big 16 point lead. The only thing I would say about Diarra, though, is he needs to get the offense started sooner, but he was good yesterday, no doubt.
