Jeff Goodwin's Big East update

They didn’t make it to a second weekend because they underperformed in the tournament. But they were consistently a top 10 team and had a NPOY as recently as 2012. They also made it to a Sweet 16 that year

I know championships are the only measure of success for us, but other programs aren’t as fortunate and have to look at other factors for success too lol
Gtown strikes me as a fan base that just needs one deep run to re-engage. When you've been bad for that long, I think you go into a state of need to see it to believe it before you commit. Get them to an Elite 8 or so, and I think Hoya Paranoia is back.

Hard to know - McDermott is a culture builder and great in game strategist, he's kind of their brand and that's not really a brand that carries outside of the coach. It's a small Catholic in Omaha in the middle of football country, not exactly what I would call a hoops destination.
They're like 6th nationally in attendance every year, they also had it rolling pretty good under Dana Altman before McDermott and the Big East move.

Game has changed a ton since Altman. Ask yourself, if you're a top recruit, if you're going Creighton or a B10 school? I'm looking at their roster now and it just looks like a bunch of JAGs. They got Greer this past year, which was a weird recruitment. They got a 60ish kid coming in out of Utah next year, then not a lot else.

I just don't think the brand of a small midwest Catholic is the way of the hoops future. It's all moving to big colorful states. Can't blame Miller for his move, at all.

You said McDermott is their brand and it doesn't carry outside of him. I don't think those fans who give them the 6th highest attendance in college basketball routinely will pack up and leave because McDermott is no longer coaching.

Of course the game is different now than when Altman was coaching I was just pointing out they played basketball before McDermott got there and routinely made the tournament.

They had their highest rated recruit ever the previous season.

What are the big colorful states college basketball is moving to?

I wouldn't exactly call Omaha colorful, mostly because I don't know what that means but there's a ton of money there, it's routinely on lists for places to live, Creighton has very good money and great fan support.

State flagships and P4. A private Catholic in Omaha in the BE is not gonna be a destination for top recruits.

So you think their recruiting is going to go down from where it's been?

It took our fanbase a little time to get fully re-engaged too. There’s also a million things to do in Dc so they have to give them a really good reason to come out (even though the Wizards, Nationals, and Commanders aren’t much better currently).

There’s a lot of competition for attention in this area. The government going through their work issues doesn’t help the economy of the area either to have excess money to spend on going to games.

But I’m digressing there.

Not gonna list them all - walk through the B10, SEC.

I don’t know why you keep clinging to the idea the BE has legs to compete with the P4. It’s more hope than reality.

No BE school other than us is making a F4, for as far out as I can see. Trend is pretty vivid.

I know where the Big East is competitively.

Not in this post but I don't know why you constantly downplay UConn's coach and accomplishments as a program and constantly play up other coaches and the accomplishments of other programs. I don't know why you constantly downplay and flat out disparage UConn players while constantly hyping up players around the country.

I downplay? I think what Hurley did was the single most impressive accomplishment in college hoops. I don’t downplay. But I don’t have to resort to trashing other great coaches to support that. Good lord man.

You trashed Tarris. You said we only have three plus players on our roster. You said the goal needed to be 3-3 in these out of conference games and that was before Tarris got hurt in the BYU game. You're now saying Painter is a fine comparison with Hurley despite it taking Hurley four seasons at UConn before he went back to back in the most convincing fashion ever and it's taken Painter 20 full seasons never to win a championship. A little push back on that when someone brings up Painter losing to St. Peter's and you bring up New Mexico State. These are just a few recent examples but it's pretty consistent and constant in your posts.

I trashed Tarris? Really? Seriously? Because I said he's a kid that is easily effected and can be inconsistent. Tarris is a great kid and a super impressive basketball player/athlete, but no one is giving him an award for the all-grit 100% focused award. Hurley himself has gone to lengths of saying he's a Teddy Bear that needs to play more like a Kodiak Bear (weird even writing that). Do you think that's just because he's a nice guy? No, he's a kid that has a tendency not to bring it 100% of the time. If he did, he'd be first team AA. I can't with some of you. What a TRASHING!!

And yeah, where Painter and Hurley are right now, right now, they're widely considered two of the top coaches in the game, by everyone that isn't a Uconn koolaid drinker. So when you want to refer to distant past as to allude why Hurley is SOOO much better, it's worth noting that it wasn't that long ago that people were doubting Hurley.

This shouldn't be so hard to digest TBH. It doesn't have to be all roses all the time to have a decent conversation.

You absolutely trashed him. Reed could barely move/jump against BYU and Illinois and you're questioning his heart/toughness.

It's not all about roses and drinking the Kool-aid but you constantly denigrate our players and make these terrible takes.

Distant past? What are you even talking about?

I stand by it - I don't think Tarris is the kind of kid that would play well through pain. He might go out there. There are some guys that can grit pain out and find ways to be effective, some can't. The kid has a tough time staying consistent even when he's coming off the bench. Love him as a player, I just think it's important to give him consistency.

Posters are referring to St Peter's with Painter to evaluate him as a coach today - who cares about that. That doesn't take away from what he's done more recently. Coaches need time, just like players, to figure things out. Painter has over 500 wins and a 70% winning percentage at Purdue.

I'm curious as to how you could possibly have any clue as to how much pain he was in?

Yes it's possible that it was at a level that some could play through, but it is also possible that it was at a level that some warriors couldn't tolerate. We don't have any was of knowing and I personally find it mind boggling that someone would not only jump to a conclusion like that, but also share it on the internet.

You said he doesn't strike you as a kid who can tough out some pain. You said this after he just toughed it out through pain against BYU and Illinois to help the team win both. You also said his body language was terrible.

Before Ewing screwed everything up, they were one of the top programs in the country. Cooley is doing his best Hurley impression to put the pieces back together.
There is a quote out there that Ed Cooley did not find the cupboard bare when he arrived at Georgetown, there was no cupboard at all. Ewing left nothing.

So 25 years of no Big 10 title is enough for you? Villanova and UConn are both capable and St. John’s with Rick will always have a punchers chance. Stop drinking the kool aid. Basketball is different than football, a big East school, a Gonzaga can make it to and even win a FF.

World is changing my man - and it's changing fast. The Big10 has 2 of the top 4 teams in the country this year, and the best conference this year. This is not 2018, it's 2025.

Gonzaga can do it because they have a genius at head coach - the Few's are few (get it) and far between.

Did you not see how scratch the Elite 8 was last year? It's going to look more and more like football. The mid majors and low high majors will be minor league systems for the real high majors.

If he can’t understand why the comment is considered to be “trashing” a player, he’s probably irredeemable.

Because he has to give an opinion on anything and everything on here. It might be helpful if he either gets another hobby or spends more time with his family. Preferably both. 😀
Listen, it’s not easy being the only poster who can see things objectively. It’s a heavy burden amid all this pro-UConn hysteria he’s dealing with

I'm in Executive Search in the Venture Capital world - on a machine a lot. Some things I do are tedious, and jamming with you fools is a nice way to keep it interesting. I type fast, and I miss HooperScooper often.

Do you express this many opinions to your wife and kids? If so I need to ask them how much they enjoy it. 😀

I think you and @HW611 are cutting Cooley too much slack here. It's not 2018 anymore. New coaches are almost always tasked with replacing an entire roster upon arrival, and most of the good ones have no trouble finding ways to compete immediately. For Georgetown to still be losing to teams like Dayton and Miami in the third year of Cooley's tenure doesn't cut it. Not saying it's entirely his fault because I don't know what kinds of conversations take place between boosters, admin, etc. But we can't have it both ways where Georgetown is one of the top jobs in the country and Cooley gets to be graded with kid gloves.
