Jaylin Stewart staying put at UConn

Pumped about this. Stewie played his best in the biggest games, and that's something you just can't teach. He needs to hit the weight room hard, improve his defense, and let 'er rip next season. I predict a much more confident JStew on a longer leash. I expect him to flourish when he's playing loose and not out there trying to avoid mistakes.

I don’t understand this game. He gains another year of playing basketball for Uconn while making 1.5M+.

Thats not absolutely nothing.
He can make more in the NBA or overseas especially if he turns out to be a good pro. We`ll see.

.-.
You said the same stuff last year we cannot afford to bank on soph-jun jumps or jun-sen jumps. Unless we’re willing to be a borderline top 25 team.
Soph-jun and jun-sen jumps led to two national championships... It just didn't come together this year. Doesn't mean player development won't continue for next year's squad.

He could make more money leaving or he could make less money leaving. Staying he has a very good idea of how much he will make and it's a lot, he has a tough decision.
If money is his deciding factor then hes better off going pro. If he sneaks into the first round he could get 12m over 4 years guaranteed. As a 2nd rounder if he plays well in pre draft workouts can still get a nice contract worth more. If he doesnt care about money and enjoys being in college and wants another shot at a title then he should stay.

Very happy for Stewie to come back! He’s always full of positive energy on the court.

Some observations about his defense. He usually stands tall with his hands up. This leads to faster reaction times when the ball handler shoots — note, he gets quite a few blocks as a result. The downside is when the ball handler spins and tries to drive by he’s a bit slower to react, often leading to getting beat on the dribble or being driven by. I hope the coaches can work on his footwork to find balance with a wider stance and a more crouched position to react quicker. I’m no pundit on this — just a person that used to play recreational bball in the past.
He’s blocked 18 shots in 72 games. Think the “quite a few” is a bit hyperbolic.

Very happy to have Stewie back there’s a ton there. Huge summer for this kid his potential is still waiting to fly out and I fully expect he will get there.

On his defense he just needs to get more consistent, quit guessing too. We’ve seen him lock down a few guys and then have a bit of matador in him. I prefer to focus on the fact he can be a good defender and another summer will bring that back with him.

Good start!

Huge!!! Primed to breakout on O, and keep improving D

40th percentile DBPM on EvanMiya among D1 players, so not as bad as some have said
40th percentile puts him in the bottom half with 60% of players being better. Is that good?

Yes. It’s not great, but some had been saying he was statistically one of the worst defenders in D1. Stats probably came from another model, but this model says he’s not that awful

Thanks. Personally I like him. He has walled up guys from time to time this year so seems to have ability. Just needs to bring it every possession next year.

He played 14 games against top 50 competition and posted 1.6 DBPM in those games. This notion he’s one of the worst defenders in college bball is silly; he wasn’t a lock down defender obviously but he showed flashes. He seems to play well against better teams. He needs to work on his body & make a huge jump to be a physical force out there. Hes not a perfect player bby any means but I do think he’s got a lot of room to grow & hoping we see a nice jump from him on both ends of the court.

The Solo, Ross, Stewie, and Reed nucleus is gonna hit like crack.

Well revisit this next year when that group is killing it.
I agree with this and all your posts about stew and the other 3.

The BYs track record of predicting the growth of certain Huskies has been abysmal:
Sanogos a black hole down there sit him.
AJax should be at end of the bench.
Hawkins can't defend
Joey C is a liability and will never learn to defend
Hass needs to come off the bench
Samson....don't get me started.

If all 4 of those guys stay....watch out

For me Stewie, Solo and Reed a must. I guess for me I would’ve preferred Abraham to stay rather than Ross, but I hope I’m wrong but just don’t see much there.

To me, Ross moves on the court very seamlessly. Like he easily gets to spots and beats his man because of his quickness and athleticism. He settled down as a defender towards the end of the year and is a pretty good playmaker.

He just needs confidence in his scoring and then he’s an NBA prospect. Scoring and confidence will unlock A LOT to his game.

Which is why I hope we get to see him as a leader with a group of guys he’s close with in Solo and Stew. Playing with guys like that can do wonders for your confidence while also just being a junior leader rather than a sophomore getting your first bit of playing experience fighting 6-7 guys with more experience than you for shots.

I’ll add a lot of the boneyard questioned Castle’s determination to be a PG in the NBA and Solo having a breakout year this past year.

Things really are as simple as having the right role, opportunity, and space to play your game.

Was really hoping he'd come back. Not the same player, but he reminds me a bit of Lyman DePreist the way he was always ready to go even if coach hadn't called his number all that much lately. Players get better. I think he's just a bit of confidence away from making the leap.

Nah, Ross doesn't have the offensive skills including his horrible shot but he is a nice hustle guy though. I don't really see a lot of upside in his game like I do with Stewart. Out of those 2 Stewart has a shot of NBA. Ross barely played end of the year and Stewart was taking over the defensive assignments of guarding the best players at the end of the year over him.

Stewie has shown each year some progression. I agree on the defense, he has shown he can lock down on D. Stewart is one of those players that needs time to build up. Next year should be his breakthrough year, he has all the attributes, height, shooting, toughness and athleticism. Great decision to stay for him instead of learning another offensive scheme and going elsewhere, plus he will make more NIL $ than last year.

Would be better to gauge it on a 40 minute basis given his limited Mpg.
Okay, 0.8 bpg per 40. Hassan’s been 0.6 in his three years here. Still think “quite a few” blocks is completely inaccurate.

Listen, I’m glad Jaylin is back. But the BYs general view of his two year performance is unbelievably inflated. Hope he lived up to his potential his jr year because we absolutely need him to step it up on both ends.
