Well I graduated HS in 1984. Things were different. East was good at football, but mostly local kids.
 
I believe many are overestimating the parochial schools ability to fund recruitment. Most if not all are barely breaking even. Of course they make inquiries to players but awarding full scholarships requires an allotment of money that is simply not available beyond a limited number. East may have a greater capacity at the moment but they have a diocese to answer to as well. If what many of you are saying is factual then both South and Acquinas would still exist.

Not EVERYONE is getting money. I would think that Jaylin is not because his father makes 300+k a year. It's not much of a concern. Reilly probably is at the school for free because of his father. Knowling? Wouldn't be surprised. McGuirl two years ago? Yes. Trey Hall--definitely.

I know at least 3 kids on the lacrosse team are getting half their tuition paid. One I am 100% sure is.

Better athletics are one of the main reasons these schools exist. Kids in public schools are fighting to get the chance at playing for a parochial school every day. I've had players disappointed when Reilly told them they weren't good enough.
 
Primo Spears and Windsor's other good guard--McKeenan or something?--are both juniors too. They could be really, really really good next year.

Again, I said, "beyond a limited number" not everyone AND that East may have a "greater capacity at the moment" but don't let me ruin your narrative of making the exception the rule.
 
There is no easy solution to this and it's not just a private vs. public school issue. There are rules in place that are meant to benefit students and provide academic opportunities that are being exploited by coaches and administrators for athletic purposes. It's unfortunate and some of the public schools and lottery based schools are exploiting it just as much as the private schools. When I was coaching at a Class S school we got destroyed by a magnet school in the state tournament before they got bumped and the Principal was in the stands openly bragging about what they had coming in the following year. How do you know that in an "open lottery"?

It all comes down to how dedicated each individual school and coach is but they find scholarships when needed and the coaches put in the time at their own expense to find players either at camps, in their AAU programs, or openly scouting. When you see an opposing varsity coach who happens to coach at a school of choice, at a random middle school or JV game you know they aren't there just for their love of basketball and they get to justify it because a kid "might want to play on their AAU team" or "went to my camp."

There are just too many layers to this problem that no matter what divisions they create and rules they put in place schools and coaches will find a way around it unless you eliminate any choice programs, which would hurt students. As a coach you have to build up your own credibility so players want to play for you and stay in your program.

When you have a great coach who achieves success I think that success builds upon itself. It’s just natural that the best players in the greater Hartford area are going to want to go to East Catholic when they see the program’s winning tradition and track record of putting kids in college programs year after year. I’m not so sure it’s recruiting I think it’s just that success starts to build upon itself. Not to mention parents see all these kids from East getting college scholarships and that certainly makes it an attractive place for your star eighth grader to go play basketball.

Reilly's at EC cause his dad coaches at Wesleyan? Joe is paying for Joey to go to EC.once again you put Luke at any school in the state and he wins. No doubt about it.

Yes, because hes a great coach. Might take a while at the real dump schools.

There cant be a doubt that he has benefitted immensely from being able to pull kids from all over.

Def riding a wave of popularity. They sucked when I was in high school. I went to Xavier. Go by the size of the school, like they pretty much do now.
 
Not “recruiting” (or maybe it was) but if you went to a Rockville vs South Windsor basketball game when I was in school 2002-2006 there would 10 kids from Hartford on the court at times through the “choice program.”

As an RHS student and athlete in a school that had maybe 800 kids I could recognize 3 kids on the basketball team. And they didn’t play. Fun fact, former walk-on Pete McCann was an assistant coach then and last I knew was the head coach.

Oddly enough, a couple years after I left, a set of two studs left East Catholic and another kid moved back from out of state to come play their senior year at Rockville with their friends and they had one of their best seasons ever.

The point is not whether we should be recruiting Hunter to come here as a scholarship player. The only point anyone has been making is, especially in a year when we're only going to have 12 scholarships and there are question marks about our depth at the point with our #1 having an injury history, wouldn't it be really nice to have a low D-1 player as a walk on to provide depth and alternatives. Our back up point guard in 2013 was a PG from Holy Cross .
He gave Bazz needed time off the ball. This kid would certainly be welcome. He is a high grade walk on.
Whether the kid is content to be a bit player on a bigger stage or a lead player on a smaller one it’s his decision to make.
If it was my kid and he loved Basketball I would advise to go where you can play Especially if he was offered a scholarship to a good academic school..
If he came here and sat 35-38 minutes for 4 years .I would suspect he would regret that he didn’t give it real real go. He could always come here as a Post Grad .

This is really what is comes down to, there are too many ways to "choice" schools and places to get recruited. Capital Prep was good at a time, Northwest Catholic, Sacred Heart and Trinity were the top catholic schools. It happens, CT is too small to separate those schools into another division.

Those that say size and catholic, to keep four division - your going to cause an uproar of the 200 kid schools that play 1100 kid schools in a division, its what happened before when it was LL, L, M, S...and all the catholic schools opted to move up to M or L...and then they would drop schools down to even out the divisions...

someone is always going to be unhappy, it should be enrollment and opt into an division above you want - if "choice/recruiting" schools are happy winning the small division, then well thats life - kids learn early.
