Ill just say this. The staff had their pick and several guys wanted to commit. They chose Furphy and that should speak volumes.

Also another underated bonus of the last couple weeks is we dont have to recruit as hard during the season now. We can see what the roster does and spring is just house money now. DH is TACTICAL.

I know I’m judging a lot by the cover of the book, but please tell me this dude is a gritty talker of smack. Feels like he’ll be intense in the Cam Spencer mold, but I’m hoping his Australianness makes him a bit more intimidating with his smack talk. Spencer would talk his game, but it was more hilarious to see huge bigs look at him like “calm down man”, I feel like Furphy could illicit fear in a very good way.

Yeah but who’s going to rebound?
UConn team rebounds. The Bigs box out and create a pocket where the perimeter players fly in and get the bounds. Remember how many RBs Newton, Castle and the rest of them would pull down most games?

With that said, they could be vulnerable if they face a team with a lot of bulk and size at the 3 through 5, but Hurley has a lot of 6-7+ players that will continue to mature and get stronger to counter that in games where more size is needed during stretches of the game.

Furphy will likely split time between the 2 and 3. And as already noted, the role in the multi-action offense is pretty much the same between the 2 and 3, and you can probably add the 1 in there as well. Most of the game the O is not initiated and run through the 1. Depending on who's out there, the motion O can start with any of the 1 through 3.

I'm not so sure. I read in one of the articles he earned the sportsmanship award at the event. Probability doesn't get that if he's a trash talker. Doesn't mean that he's not an intense competitor.

This is a great pickup! He's a really nice shooter, has active hands on defense and is a willing passer. He'll fit in nicely.

Saw that too. The SG/SF position are so similar it feels almost bizarre to say it. I'm assuming it came from the coaches.

Probably just means he isn't a PG, but I think that was obvious. He'd do better defending the 3 on defense, most importantly.
Yeah theres no reason he can’t play either SF or SG, he’s a wing. if Ross has a breakout year and beats out Mullins and Adams for a starting spot then Furphy could be the starting SG:

Great fit on all levels - more than anything would kill to understand what the plan is with this over-abundance of talent. Makes the season that much more exciting as it seems staff may be seeing things we haven’t yet.

I agree really exciting and going to be interesting to watch how it unfolds. It’s nice to be one of those teams that has lots of options. Dook Kansas ect… have had this “problem” nearly every year.

8 time zones down under
Yes, but only 3 hours difference between earliest and latest, just like the U.S.

Some of their time zones are on the half-hour, and one is sometimes on the three-quarter hour. It is a nutty, nutty country. I remember being on vacation in the outback with my wife, had to call in to work for a 9am London meeting, and needing a calculator to figure out what that meant in Uluru time.

Also, Tasmania is by far the #1 coolest place I have ever visited. Hobart an amazing city, small but modern, artsy, and liberal with lots of young people and great restaurants. Outside of Hobart there is not a straight road in the entire state; it's like the Irish countryside in the time of "The Quiet Man", but with wildlife out of some surreal LSD trip.

Check out the TV series "Deadloch" to get some of that crazy Tazzy spirit.

Exactly. Have to think this will be a year some of the older guys have to show their keep, as if not getting PT this year, writing may be on the wall. The program has gone through a significant forward evolution the last two years and I’m not sure Hurley is going to allow for tenure to keep your spot.

When a staff is in the position of being able to attract top talent, and seemingly their pick of the litter, cannot let that window pass you by for loyalty. As the sooner the flywheel starts, the sooner you achieve critical mass. Need to seize that advantage immediately as it will feed itself year over year by sending talent to the NBA. You want to be in this position every year.

Was reading the Mahaney article on Storrs Central and one thing that stood out was that he said he wanted to go to Duke in 8th grade. That’s where that brand is - imbedded, done over decades with a big part of it being the player quality that’s come through. Now that the program is at an apex, and with Hurley at the helm, no reason we can’t be that program to 8th graders over the next decade.

Yes, the program is evolving. The sophomores were recruited before the first title.
Hard to keep everybody happy next year with ten guys with starting aspirations.

Tell me you haven’t been paying attention without telling me you haven’t been paying attention.
I’ve seen nothing about crystal balls or insider predictions. Maybe that’s cuz he’s Australian. Caught me by surprise.

The composition of the class is interesting. Reibe is your traditional center but I was thinking there might be a stretch 4 in the class to accompany the elite guards/wings. But regardless this commitapalooza has been fun. Top talent on its way to Storrs.
Team will be young next year, i suspect they will bring in an experienced stud 4 via portal next year. Probably the reason no Bundalo. furphy will be able to contribute immediately. International guys are always far ahead ar his level.

From what I've seen online, there is a 15 hour differential between Hobart and EST time. It may be 3 hours if you're talking Hawaii and the OZ east coast. The date line is another factor.

I loved Australia, and tried not to factor in my American bias. Termed it "driving on the left" rather than the "wrong" side of the road. :)

Between FIBA, Australia Nationals, and NBL1, he shot 41% from the college line on close to 200 attempts. His Australia Nationals numbers brought his average down, he was at 45-46% at the other 2. But Tasmania needed him to be the man so he took more off the dribble.
