Is University of New Haven Going To Go FCS?

The Chargers' mascot is Charlie the Charger, a horse, and their football field looks like Boise State's. But why "Chargers?"

"The two most common kinds of horses used for jousting were warmblood chargers and larger destriers. Chargers were medium-weight horses bred and trained for agility and stamina. Destriers were heavier, similar to today's Andalusian horse, but not as large as the modern draft horse."

It’s a popular school for athletes and they give scholarships. I spent a lot of time there in a certificate program. They do some good stuff there.

Hi all,

Chatted with the New Haven AD about taking their dept d1. Really interesting convo -- including how Penn State is coming to New Haven to play them in basketball this year. Pretty big to get a P4 home game in just their first season at D1 level.

 
Yikes, transitioning D2 New Haven hoops opening this fall against UConn will be rough at best for the Chargers. Massively different than a past highly inconvenient Huskies gridiron loss to a then pretty good D2 opponent, but a decent income opportunity for New Haven. No doubt the game will thrill some UConn season ticket holders. /s

I would take that deal in a heartbeat if I were UNH. Get a guaranteed matchup with a B1G school for four years, including one at home in your first year.

-> UNH will also play Columbia and UMass-Lowell as part of that MTE. Sandwiched in between will be a home date with Penn State. Yes, you read that correctly ... Penn State, on Nov. 8 at the on-campus Hazell Athletics Center.

"Our athletic director (Devin Crosby) was pretty aggressive in trying to get a big game here," Hotaling noted. "He really did a great job reaching out. That was one of the first things that came about. It's an exciting game for us on our campus." <-

This is an another head scratcher. There is absolutely no money to be made at the FCS level. Is this perhaps a way to try and get buy games? Can see it now. New Haven football at the shoe.

A bunch of teams moved up to FBS and it probably costs about the same to compete in FCS as it does in D2.

most FCS teams provide 63 football scholarships. In addition due to title IX, New Haven will also then have to provide equal number of scholarships for women sports.

I think UNH already complies with title ix. The Northeast Conference, now the NEC, is made up of mostly similar institutions, small northeastern privates. Seems like a good fit.

It's a maximum of 63. Many don't offer that many and also offer partials. Some of these FCS conferences were completely non scholarship for football.

Obviously something changed to make it more affordable.
