Is University of New Haven Going To Go FCS?

I know they were building the stadium and support areas and whatnot to go FCS back in 2021. What’s the latest here?

With declining enrollments throughout the country, its my belief you’ll actually see a swath of FCS and below caliber programs added in the next 5+ years as schools aim to boost enrollment and therefore tuition $

New York/New England is littered with small private schools that face continued enrollment challenges. Starting up a DIII program with annual operating expenses ranging from $2-$5M may seem like a lot but with an average roster size in D3 of ~110 people and no athletic scholarships provided at that level you need to charge each kid $18-$45k in tuition to break even, and everyone knows tuition at these schools is $70k+

Their AD, Zenger who was driving the move, became the president of a school in Illinois last year. Zenger was the AD at Kansas following the Lew Perkins scandal. Don't know how much the momentum stalled after his leaving. An article associated with the FCS move cited a potential 11% drop in northeast area enrollment population soon due to folks' financial constraints from the 2008 recession.

Lacrosse and ice hockey are the only sports where a non D1 school can participate at a D1 level (don't be surprised if ice hockey gets dropped from that list soon).

That waiver is expired (with grandfathering). The recent additions to D1 hockey had to upgrade all sports (FCS if they play football). Pretty sure Hobart & Hopkins are the only Lacrosse teams playing up. Hartwick had a waiver for soccer but ended up dropping the sport. Water Polo used to waive also but recently added a D3 championship.

lol. Chicago St is probably the worst athletic program in D-1, if not the entire NCAA. FB will likely be a disaster.

IIRC, I thought you could elevate in any sport except basketball and football it was just limited to one per gender

I remember walking out of Memorial the year they beat us. Disgusted to say the least. Like when Calhoun lost to UHart at the HCC his year 1.

However, IMHO, I actually think that Central and Southern should be D3. It makes sense for the state to pour money into UConn athletics as a marketing arm of the university. However, for the other state institutions, I don't think it does. I don't foresee Central ever becoming an NC State to UNC. The truth is that we are a small state by area and medium-sized state by population. We are going to see more and more schools drop out of Division 1 in the next few years. Hartford and Saint Francis Brooklyn won't be the only ones. Matt Brown (of Extra Points) put out an article last week stating SEVERAL northeastern Division 1 institutions are seriously considering dropping down in the next couple weeks. Don't be stunned if it is a school you know.

You should reread the article. He does not say several northeast schools. He says multiple D-1 schools. I'd expect to see more smaller state schools in the South dropping. Though no doubt there will also be some northeast schools that are not playing football.

You should reread the article. He does not say several northeast schools. He says multiple D-1 schools. I'd expect to see more smaller state schools in the South dropping. Though no doubt there will also be some northeast schools that are not playing football.

The CCSU president wants to drop, too. Sad for CCSU and SCSU but you're probably right. Though a league with the 4 directional state schools in D3 would be pretty fun

Unfortunately you are probably right. The gap is growing larger and larger between FBS and FCS. I don’t know about the gaps between FCS, D2 and D3 but I imagine it’s no where near close to the former.

Even at Central’s level of FCS, they likely have more scholarship athletes, coaches, etc than a lax team would require. Additionally, fewer FCS football scholarships likely equals fewer Title IX coed scholarships.

Unclear when, but wasn’t Central football D2 a few decades ago? Similar to comparable size, D2 Southern.
