Is University of New Haven Going To Go FCS?

Even at Central’s level of FCS, they likely have more scholarship athletes, coaches, etc than a lax team would require. Additionally, fewer FCS football scholarships likely equals fewer Title IX coed scholarships.

Unclear when, but wasn’t Central football D2 a few decades ago? Similar to comparable size, D2 Southern.

'92-93 went from D2 independent to D1 AA.

Edit to add that CCSU has about 500 more students. Both schools are 9-10k total enrollment.

I believe that was also primarily in response to then NCAA bylaw that was passed that prevented schools who were classified to Division 1 from participating in a lower division for football. That rule saw a number of schools (28 of them) who were D2 or D3 forced into D1. The Pioneer League was formed as a result of the rule change (and the MAAC started sponsoring football).

What years did Northeastern- Bost U. and Hofstra drop football. Did they ever consider restart at D2 -D3 ? Ever any interest for Vermont to get back in the game ?

If a school is in D-1 they cannot compete at a lower level in any sport.

BU cancelled before the 1998 season, kind of late in comparison to when schools would normally announce something like that, which is why we ended up playing (and beating) eventual national champion UMass twice that year.

I'm pretty sure that Northeastern dropped football before BU did but not sure as to exactly when. Hofstra held on quite a few years longer, untill about fifteen years ago.

NEC is going to be in trouble with teams dropping to D3.

Le Moyne and Stonehill recently came up. Mercyhurst and Chicago St. just joined. But dang, there's probably been 30 different schools involved in this league. No one stays for very long. Merrimack is gone, Duquesne and RoMo are football only. Not very stable.

CCSU needs to move to the MAAC or CAA.

Northeastern dropped football in 2009. They were in the A-10 and then the CAA. BU ended it in the late '90s.

What's more expensive to run, FCS football or D1 lacrosse? not sure what Central's priorities are regarding athletics and alumni sentiment, but I would think dropping football and redirecting that spending to something like lacrosse or soccer or whatever would better serve the school.

Lacrosse is a sport that does zero for northeastern schools that a not power schools. I’d be more accurate to say aren’t located in Canada. Over and over I read nonsense about how big lacrosse is going to be, then I look at attendance data and it is in the 100s not even the 1000s. I’ve been to Central Footbsll and basketball games. Pretty solid FCS crowd in football. I’d guess 4000. Good crowd, band all around fun experience. Basketball was the same. Not a sellout but solid attendance. And people were into it.

I’m not sure why people think students, alumni or the general public will care about lacrosse or even soccer. The reality is that neither one draw flies nor generate even modest interest. CCSU probably draws more fans to a football game than any of the D1 lacrosse programs in the state do in a season.

As far as dropping down to D3, in part I blame the NCAA rule. I’m not sure why a school ought not play D2 or D3 football and D1 in other sports, or frankly not play D1 football and Basketball and D3 in hockey and lacrosse. UConn did that in hockey for decades. It was fine.

I suspect it will be the smaller private schools that are the biggest wave of teams dropping down. I also wonder if at some point the “elite” privates like the Ivies and the Patriot just say the heck with all of you and form their own entity with their own rules. Princeton will still be Princeton even if it doesn’t play in the NCAA tournament. I could even see a Georgetown being tempted by such an arrangement.

I feel like its very possession heavy and not very dynamic. Further, since the ball often remains in a stick you can't just look up and tell immediately what's going on. Even in hockey you can usually see the puck within a second or two unless its under 2-3 bodies along the boards.

With soccer there is more of a build-up, trying to create space and passing lanes, it's "beautiful." Rugby is always fun to watch.

It's amazing that Soccer Sundays at UConn used to be by far the biggest event on the Storrs campus

Kind of a funky setup there with the two fields together. Think UVM was considered the best public school in the NE at the time. Their Qb named Bateman was an All-American, finished up at Brown and played a few years in the NFL. He was good, may be their best ever,

I remember going to a Vermont - UConn football game some time in the 1970's. Heavy rain the entire time. Left at halftime , changed to dry cloths, and returned. Bateman might have been the QB. Not sure why I still remember that day.

He was. Injured in the 4th. Maybe remember because of that weather and...Russ Clarke rushed 44 times for over 200 yards. Still a UConn record for carries I believe. Folks thinking he was the next Torkelson after that.

why? NEC is now largely dregs, especially ChicagoSt which probably would lose most matchups with D3 Trinity.
if the AE needs schools, take 1 or 2 of the better NEC and that's it.

Yeah, people don't realize how low the NEC is in general. America East holds way higher standards

Who does that make sense for? America East doesn't need any of the NEC currently and will never need all of the NEC. NEC and MEAC merger could maybe happen if it needs to.
