UCONN and Geno don't agree with the style you want this UCONN team to play. IMO you are favoiring "style of play" vs "playing to the team's strengths." You don't go and give your worst efficient players (Jana and Ice) more opportunities to shoot vs the many other players that are more efficient and in quite a few cases much, much more efficient. You play to the style that best suits your team.
@donalddoowop I appreciate your insight. You seem like a knowledgeable fan and a nice guy.

Hoop Huskee, I agree with you. But this is a great discussion for a main thread. I'll start it now. And tag you both. Let's have fun and be civil.

Great win! Ash got it started, and Paige and Sarah helped to close it out. It was nice to see all the 3s drop tonight, but we've got to establish some kind of a post-game. I'm waiting for Jana or Ice to be more productive. We will need it from the post when the 3s aren't dropping. I refuse to be a prisoner of the moment because it doesn't get any easier on Saturday having to deal with JuJu and Iriafen.
Easy to relax when your 3rd or 4th shooting option is draining every shot!

Geno: "Ice played great tonight. She's not gonna get a lot of box score stuff but I thought she had a great game. Great game."
This is all I need to know wrt Ice. If the coaches set goals for the team, and Ice performed as they planned, then that's cool.

It marked the first time in the past 25 seasons that UConn had three players with at least 25 points in the same game. No other Division I team has had a trio of players do that this season.
Freshman Allie Ziebell notched UConn's 19th 3-pointer to set the program record (previously set in 2014-15 and 2008-09) with 3:19 left in the game, before classmate Morgan Cheli made No. 20 with 2:04 to go.
"I think we're going to need three legitimate big-time scorers the entire season," Auriemma said. "Where they come from, it really doesn't matter to me, but hopefully we'll have at least four maybe when Azzi gets back."

.-.
My only downer observation is that UConn gave up to many 3 point baskets. They gave up 68 points. If they'd had an off shooting night, like they did against ND, it would've gone down to the wire. I don't understand why the teams of late can't guard the outside shots.

Otherwise I was thrilled, especially for Shade. Let's hope this game is a momentum builder for Saturday night. They'll need it. I think Kiki is a more dynamic player than Juju.

Our perimeter defense is such a let down this season but it was to be expected with Nika gone. AE was also a pretty great defender.

Other than that, not much to complain about. We guarded the entry pass, Audi got lower points than normal, and 3 people nearly had 30 burgers.

I think the game Katie Lou went off was down at Mohegan as well. Shade was brilliant tonight hoping this gives her that extra confidence to build off of. PB and SS were who they are stars. What a performance against a non buy team which makes it even more impressive. Bring on USC

The people that judge performances from box scores aren’t going to get Geno’s comment.
Yup.

I wonder if it helps to read the box score ‘inside out.’ What does Audi’s stat line say about Ice’s game? She’d just had two 30 pt games, dominant performances. Ice (and Jana) didn’t “shut her down,” but they made her mostly irrelevant.

According to the box score, Audi got 22 pts and 6 rebounds, but she wasn’t able to control the game. Sydney Harris was perhaps more troublesome to UConn’s effort with 17 pts including 5-7 shooting on 3s. .

In all our discussions and critiques of Ash, someone mentioned that she was expending too much energy on aggressive defense and that affected her shot. Notice tonight with the defensive strategy being more on covering Crooks in the paint, only Kaitlyn was out on defensive point and Ash more in toward the basket to help out on rebounds. She expended far less energy and her shot came back - how about that!!!
That's an interesting observation...

Don't sell yourself short. I'm sure you could understand if you wanted to. How much time do you really want to spend with the ball in Jana's hands?
So far, it looks like Geno wants Jana to focus on rebounding and scoring off putbacks. She’s been able to do a bit of this. But there are flaws to this part of her game, most notably bringing the ball down low. I expect to see some development here. Her low post moves also take too long to get a shot up. As she gets more efficient I think we’ll see more passes to her in the low post.

By the way, here’s the box score

They have got to call her for throwing the elbow before someone gets hurt!

Dee Kantner does not call elbows. Kantner was the ref closest to the play when a Texas player threw an elbow into Katie Lou’s eye and guess what? Spoiler alert: No call. Afterward, Katie Lou looked like she went a few rounds with Mike Tyson

The men played a game recently where UConn’s Solo Ball got hit in the face with an elbow and the ref called a foul on Solo. It was bizarre

Crooks is the “her” I was referring to!
Maybe it's just esthetics. Maybe that's what basketball should look like. My thought is that when post players play like fullbacks, something of the elegance of the game is sacrificed. There was a moment (and I'm not blaming Crooks) when she bulled into one of the Uconn post players to make space for a shot. 1) the post player was pretty surprised. 2) No foul. 3) But it was clearly a charge. There are some people who are saying, "We want it to look like that." And some who say, "No we don't."

Missed the game live last night.

Not much to say other than I hope they can shoot this well when playing against USC this weekend.

The foul disparity is noteworthy. Never realized Morgan fouled out of the game.

(And now in the "beating a dead horse" category please bear with me while I gripe but once again we have to suffer through Fox commentators almost having a 1 on 1 friendly conversation between the two of them about whatever one of them comes up as something to talk about except calling the game. Calling the game? What's that? Why this continues to be permitted by Fox is baffling.)

I like Bill Fennelly, he’s a class act. I appreciate his clearing his bench when Geno did. No need for a starter or key player to risk injury when the game is already decided
Fennelly is one of the coaches that needs to be admired for not only his coaching ability (He's been at it for more than a few years) but also his positive personality that he brings to his coaching style. He coaches the right way and sets a tremendous example for his young women.

18-7 foul disparity? Kantner can’t retire soon enough.
There was a recent discovery of alternate universes. I was so relieved by it because I always thought I was in a different universe that she was in when I watched our games.

I agree. Very old school. Last night all he could do was just sit there and take it. 59% from the arc is just stupid.
