Ice defended Crooks really well. Some good occasional help from Shade and Chen, too.

I hope this puts all the “Shade can’t shoot” talk to rest.

For those not familiar with Atomic Dog (Gotta love George and PFunk):

I was going to settle in, but gotta bust the vinyl out now.

Loved the game. My only criticism (or really worry for the future) is that UConn needs a fourth scorer.
I agree, preferably one of the bigs like Ice or Jana; they have plenty of scoring guards now if they could step up to help Sarah or keep the production from the bigs going when she goes to the bench, the team would truly be unbeatable and, If Allie and Morgan get into a rhythm along with Jana and Ice during the BE portion of the schedule, Aubrey and Azzi come back healthy, this team is going to be scary. on another note, I really hope KK works on her jumper if she gets a jump shot or a floater along with her defensive pressure, she's going to the W for sure

18-7 foul disparity? Kantner can’t retire soon enough.
To all you people who
Liked this post- get a clue on the game tonight. UConn took 34 3 pt Shots and virtually all Of them were open looks due to our ball movement which means ISU could not foul.
ISU on the other hand pushed the ball inside where we double downed on Crooks and then had to scramble to guard an open shooter or another base line drive which resulted in fouls. I was at this game and YES we committed more fouls solely due to our style that ISU could not defend. We had 27 assists on 37 baskets. The was not a referee disparity issue. Did Dee and the others miss some calls against Paige and by Crooks, yes but Morgan probably committed 8 fouls while only be called for 5 and Jana had some action that was not called.
I think Geno and staff are perfectly fine with how this game was called and you should be too.

Happy for Shade after the ND game. Hopefully she can stay hot on Saturday. Great overall game. Paige and Sarah lit it up also. I almost feel bad for Iowa State. That had to be crushing.

Chen is a better defender than I thought. I like her bringing the ball up. She immediately goes on the attack by passing deep into the defense or probing by the dribble. She doesn't allow them to set up and get comfortable.
Agree, and for a kid who was the go-to player on a solid Princeton team, she has taken on a completely new role for the Huskies. She handles the ball well and looks to set up her teammates every time down. A fantastic team player!

If Crooks was called the way Jana was...Crooks would have fouled out TWICE. I looked at Jana's fouls from multiple games...and even in slow motion I don't get why a foul was called. I'm not even sure Jana's charge was a charge. Real discrepancy is 6-0 in post calls.

Agreed.

Fun with stats: Iowa State came into the game averaging 17.9 FT attempts per game (tonight they had only 12).
UConn, as has been amply discussed, was averaging a paltry 9.3 FT attempts per game (we matched that with 9 tonight).

So if anything we "beat the spread" in terms of drawing shooting fouls, hitting our season average while holding our opponent to below theirs.

Very very happy for Ash, BUT she needs to show she can compete like this against better/more athletic teams. Not saying she needs to score almost 30 to prove herself, even just slight improvements in her scoring/efficient against top teams would help our chances of winning a lot!

Crooks reminds me of a huge center for Oklahoma years ago. Also had her almost as big sister there. All American but can't remember if she made the pros. Crooks not as athletic.
Had a reasonably long pro career.

Yup, Courtney Paris... she and Maya Moore are the only four-time AP All-Americans. Pretty good company for Courtney.

There were posters saying in the chat room that UConn does not need an inside game. They truly don't know basketball well. I agree with you. A team that can score inside and outside is hard to guard. UConn's outside shooting is not always accurate. I still can't understand why UConn cannot get the ball to their post as easily as Iowa State does theirs.
I keep telling folks that the chat room is The Devil's Den.

Nice win! It was great to see Ashlynn having fun out there. Her smile just lights up a room. Her shot was automatic tonight! Paige is Paige. She just is such an amazing player. Sarah played outstanding! She looks so at ease out there. Ice played decently out there. Got some deflections, rebounds, and some steals. She looked comfortable.

UCONN and Geno don't agree with the style you want this UCONN team to play. IMO you are favoiring "style of play" vs "playing to the team's strengths." You don't go and give your worst efficient players (Jana and Ice) more opportunities to shoot vs the many other players that are more efficient and in quite a few cases much, much more efficient. You play to the style that best suits your team.

-this was the same team that was 3-16 from three against ND. School game for threes made in a game. What a treat to watch.

-Ash must have read all the wonderful tips found in Nan’s thread on her mechanics.

-In 11 games, I would guess that I have counted less than 5 times Sarah has made a bad choice on the floor. Great seeing her get hot from three.

-Crooks is a nice player, could she help UConn?

-I do think though that Ice held her own against her.

-I feel bad for Jana. Obviously busting her butt but with little to show for it. Geno must see something in practice because she continues to get minutes.

-As great as the first quarter was, the Huskies are still struggling with gaps where their defense struggles defending the three.

-BY historians, when was the last time the Huskies have three players score at least 27 in a game?
In the fourth quarter, Jana showed a nice half-sky hook with her left hand. Crooks left the game shortly after that, so Jana is showing improvement. Definitely need to show more of the hook shot!!

Go Huskies!!!

The Parrish Sisters. Their dad was an offensive lineman in the NFL, who said that the coach should quit if she did not win the NC.

However, UConn was their opponent in the Final Four & therefore no NC for OK.

Atomic Dawgs were barking tonight!!!

Ashley and Courtney Paris.

Ashley Paris:
Paris was drafted in the WNBA draft with the 22nd overall pick in the second round, 14 spots after her twin sister Courtney Paris. Paris was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks announced that they decided to waive Paris on June 4, one day before the 11-man roster deadline on June 5. Although she was waived by the Sparks, she did manage to play in a preseason game. She wore the number 54 at the forward position. She scored 1 point which came at the free throw line. She played eight minutes for the Sparks in her only WNBA "game". In March 2010 she was signed to a training camp contract by the Phoenix Mercury, and in March 2011 to a similar contract by the Atlanta Dream. On March 2, 2015 Paris signed a training camp contract by the San Antonio Stars.

Courtney Paris:
Paris was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs at No. 7 pick in the 2009 WNBA draft and her sister was drafted to the Los Angeles Sparks.

On December 14, 2009, the WNBA held a dispersal draft for the Monarchs' players. Courtney was taken with the fourth pick by the Chicago Sky. On May 12, 2010, Paris was waived by the Sky.

On February 8, 2011, she signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Sparks and on June 2, she was waived.

Paris signed with the Tulsa Shock in 2012. She led the WNBA in rebounding averaging 10.2 per game in 2014 and 9.3 per game in 2015.

On February 2, 2018, Paris signed a multi-year contract with the Seattle Storm

Nah. I read a couple of posts above about the foul discrepancy. And I don’t agree. I don’t think the officiating has been acceptable the last couple of games. I remember looking at the box score in the Notre dame game in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter and they only had 6 team fouls. That’s insane.

I am hoping in a presser here pretty soon that Geno will complain about the officiating, the lack of foul calls Paige gets, and the ticky tack calls that are plaguing UConn.

Crooks, unfortunately, owned Jana on the post.
However, Crooks, reportedly, had NO offensive rebounds. Audi was
also approximately 10 points below her scoring of the last two games. Her
Season average is 21 points... so maybe not so bad for Jana (and ICE).
I just really enjoy Sarah.

In this video of the post-game presser... I was taken with how
HAPPY Geno was. He was downright playful with Sarah! I also
enjoyed Ash's smiles when SARAH was saying how she was
"challenged" by Geno's " comments " during practices!

btw...Ice had 4 steals and 0 TOs tonight.
I also appreciated the quote from GENO (somewhere in the
post-game threads) of how pleased he was with ICE's Play.
My guess is that ICE performed according to the ROLE THAT
HER HEAD COACH needed from her... and to help secure the
"W" for the TEAM... Kudos to ICE for getting those pearls of
praise from Geno! NICE!

Really happy for Shade, this was a good breakout game for her this season. Strong is not only not afraid to shoot, but found her rhythm from 3 and looks like one of the top 3 point shooters on this team, healthy or unhealthy. Bueckers found her groove and Shade's scoring took some pressure off of her. Ice Brady worked her tail off. Cheli is a good help side post defender. Jana was good but needs to work on her defense, Crooks scored most of her points against her.

Great team win and hope the hot 3 point shooting continues
If Jana fronted Crooks rather than behind her she might have, like Ice in the second half shut her down. Ice created a lot of steals by stepping in front of Crooks and tipping the entry pass. This was a great coaching change after half time. Cheli was very active inside and our guards, with their quick feet and hands disrupted Crooks.

Credit Crooks with solid deep positioning and great shooting under pressure. This game was a window on our future. We are very deep. Our young team is getting comfortable with each other. Eight turnovers against a good Iowa State team are impressive.
I am tired of watching "big" players, other than UConn players, just move their defenders with their backside and get away with it. And depending on the ref under the basket, odds are it will be an "and one". If Jana, or Ice tries the same, offensive foul. Thank you, Dee Kantner. She also must have something against Morgan. Who else would make that call at mid court in the 4th quarter of a blowout for a player's 5th PF? Dee would (and did).
I was really worried about Lou's consecutive 3pt record while watching the 1st quarter. But if Ashlynn had done it, great for her.
I am still freaking out over that 1st quarter, ain't see anything comparable except the First Round tournament game against St. Francis (PA).
Some strange calls for sure. Some calls seemed to happen before anything happened!

Chen ran a great offense, quick pace and well-placed deep passes. KK is taking too long to set our offense, she also needs to take it to the hoop from time to time. Finish or pass to our bigs.

On the ND game, she was the only one forcing HH left, and actually caused HH to drive into traffic or miss. Perimeter wise, she wasn’t good, but when HH was on ball, Chen made her uncomfortable a lot more than I thought she would. She’s been a good defender since Princeton, every time she and Harmoni Turner matched up, Chen outplayed her and made life hell for Turner.

Great win but on your comment regarding Jana she was very effective on defense when Crooks wasn't in. Frankly, once Crooks has the ball near the basket (and the most effective D for her is to prevent her from getting the ball in the first place) there isn't much that can be done to prevent her from turning, banking in a shot and scoring and Jana looked nervous because she didn't want to foul out. (Crooks also knows how to create space for herself with her non shooting arm thrusts or hard push into the chest of a defender which is something that the refs definitely must see but mostly overlook) What really was needed and it worked well on several occasions was help side defense when one of the guards or wings came to try ti get the ball out of her hands and assist in defending. I for one am a fan of Jana. I love her passion and enthusiasm. She has some very good skills for a big and will refine them. CD and Jamelle are working with her. Let's give her some time and BY support.

Now back to this win. Great juggernaut by the three Atomic Dogs. Happy for Ash (and maybe she put to rest comments about her 'mechanics") and Paige looked great. As far as Sarah, she plays with so much poise and control. Acts like a senior. Very mature. Nothing seems to faze her. What a future. We Husky fans are lucky.

Now we need to make it Atomic Dogs Plus 2 and put the pedal on the Trojans. I'll be there with some old diehard Huskies doing the UConn cheer. Come on out. Let's keep the UConn Spirit, Pride and Tradition going.
