Since we were without internet lasty night, we had no tv. Our provider is a streaming service. Construction outfit cut the fiber optic cable.

So just finished watching the game. I disagree with the posters hammering Ice and Jana. Their job last night was to contain and make Crooks work for every point she got. They disrupted what Crooks likes to do. And you should include Sarah in that plan. As someone mentioned, Crooks had just 6 rebounds and no offensive rebounds.

As has been stated many times, Jana is in her first year of playing D1 ball. She is learning. She will improve. Ice is in her second year of actual play. Much better than last year.

As to the fouls, Crooks got away with a lot. She used her arm to hook both Ice and Jana restricting their movement.Nothing was called. In a few of her screens, she stuck out her elbow and nothing was called.

With Ash, Paige and Sarah lighting it up, some want the ball to go into the post. Really?? Ice several times presenter herself to get the ball, but the pass went to one of the last night's sharp shooters for a 2 or 3.

Excellent win last night.

I think the game Katie Lou went off was down at Mohegan as well. Shade was brilliant tonight hoping this gives her that extra confidence to build off of. PB and SS were who they are stars. What a performance against a non buy team which makes it even more impressive. Bring on USC
True. It happened during the AAC Championship game against USF her sophomore season, 03/06/17.

This did not want to be found, but finally ... Bill classey guy. Funny in speaking about Sarah. After the fun he said he was pretty surprised at how much she looked like a UConn player after 11 games.

Is it the Big 12 we want to join and destroy?

UCONN and Geno don't agree with the style you want this UCONN team to play. IMO you are favoiring "style of play" vs "playing to the team's strengths." You don't go and give your worst efficient players (Jana and Ice) more opportunities to shoot vs the many other players that are more efficient and in quite a few cases much, much more efficient. You play to the style that best suits your team.
That's dead on. Why give it to the post players, especially last night, when we have the shooters and scorers we do? You have the best player in the country and the best freshman who is just an offensive juggernaut at times. Who should shoot, them or Jana/Ice? Also, we don't have Audi inside. If you have a player that can get 20 a game inside you give it, if you don't you don't. You only get so many offensive possessions per game, those with the highest percentage overall, should be getting those shots and the better shots on any team.

Some thoughts on the Iowa State game;
  • I was really interested to see how UConn defended Crooks tonight. She is an absolute force in the paint. The Huskies tag-teamed Crooks by running Ice and Jana in and out, keeping them both fresh while giving Crooks different looks on defense. Ice in particular worked incredibly hard battling Crooks in the low blocks. Crooks still scored 22 points, but she really had to work to get them. In her previous 2 games she put up 31 & 30 pts respectively..
  • There were several holes in Iowa St’s zone to start the game and Ashlynn found every single one of them. GOOD GRACIOUS WAS SHE HOT!!!
  • When Ashlynn wasn’t torching the Cyclone’s, Paige and Sarah were. OK who had UConn up 36-10 at the end of the 1st qtr with only 3 Huskies scoring points? :)
  • The Cyclones gave up on the zone after one qtr. Wouldn’t you? UConn cooled off and ISU got hot closing the deficit to 19 at the half. But the Huskies put their foot on the gas in the 3rd, pushing the lead up to 29 and it was GAME OVER,
  • I really liked KK’s harassing defense on ISU’s pg’s tonight. The Cyclones struggled at times to run their offense because of all the pressure on their guards.
  • Tonight’s game with 3 UConn players lighting it up would be whatever you call the opposite of an “Everybody Eats” game.
  • It was raining 3's tonight as the Huskies set an all-time record by knocking down 20/33 (60%) from the arc,
  • Bring on the Women of Troy…Paige vs JuJu…National TV…Lets go Huskies!!!
ASH played like a break-out star. I know she has the potential to be that. I hope this is the beginning. That would give us three " stars" in the A-team line-up. ASH didn't just shoot well last night, she played a terrific all around game ( rebounding, defense, assists, etc.). I agree that ICE played hard and well. Some excellent moves keeping passes from getting into Crooks. She just needs to start hitting her shots from the outside. And she can.

Jana is a battler and gets a ton of bad foul calls against her. But that is life in the big leagues. She took some shots tonight. Good to see ( none went in ...maybe one, bounced around and fell through ). But the fact that she took shots shows a growing confidence. I think she will continue to develop nicely. But we were led to expect a lot more.

Chen is playing well as is KK. It was interesting to see what coach did with the bench. He gave each kid some time with first teamers, to see what would happen. Sadly, not much happened for Q, Morgan or Allie . But court time is court time. I still think Morgan is ahead of that pack, but Allie did hit her first shot of the night. Q missed hers. And she threw away another pass. Ugh. But she does work hard on defense.

Any minute now we will have Azzi back and hopefully durable. Then we may have 4 deadeyes on the floor now and then. You never know. Rebounding will improve with only a big and no forward on the floor. But if you become a team with no opportunities for bigs to score, the whole issue will go away. No big worth anything will come to your program.

@donalddoowop I appreciate your insight. You seem like a knowledgeable fan and a nice guy.

Hoop Huskee, I agree with you. But this is a great discussion for a main thread. I'll start it now. And tag you both. Let's have fun and be civil.
I look at the 5 position as a combined effort by Ice & Jana [combined last night: 40.00 mins, 5 pts [but the Atomic Dawgs had 83 combined, so not an issue], 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 Turnovers, 4 steals, 1 block, and 6 personal Fouls (of 10 available). Keeping the #5 position fresh allows ICE and/or Jana to have an outstanding game by the key items that Geno needs to have them accomplish to get the win.

Mission accomplished!! Just ask Geno!

To all you people who
Liked this post- get a clue on the game tonight. UConn took 34 3 pt Shots and virtually all Of them were open looks due to our ball movement which means ISU could not foul.
ISU on the other hand pushed the ball inside where we double downed on Crooks and then had to scramble to guard an open shooter or another base line drive which resulted in fouls. I was at this game and YES we committed more fouls solely due to our style that ISU could not defend. We had 27 assists on 37 baskets. The was not a referee disparity issue. Did Dee and the others miss some calls against Paige and by Crooks, yes but Morgan probably committed 8 fouls while only be called for 5 and Jana had some action that was not called.
I think Geno and staff are perfectly fine with how this game was called and you should be too.
I liked that post and I do not regret it. You only reacted to why UConn did not get a lot off offensive foul calls. To that I agree and you are correct. UConn is coached not to foul. Do they - certainly. I also looked at what occurred on the other side of the ball. Crooks hooks hard with her elbow on almost every one of her post moved and runs over defenders (and as was mentioned in another thread hip fouls are often not called). There was several plays where Paige was malled with no call. So yes I also was thinking back on other games I've seen her call. So yes - they should have gotten more calls on offense then we did. And we should have gotten more calls then they did on defense. More even. My take on the game. Obviously yours is different. Welcome to sports :D

When Ashlynn started so hot last night from 3, I thought of @Centerstream and wondered if Katie Lou, so recently returned as their avatar, would be replaced by a smiling Ashlynn! But looks like Lou kept her spot, for now, at least. :)
Yes, 9 for 9 beyond the arc is hard to match!

Also, what the Atomic Huskies did last night to ISU is also hard to match...

Go Huskies!!!!

I think joining the Big 12 would be good for everything except Men's Basketball and women's hockey.

Agree with your assessment of Bill F.

ISU has Crooks who is pretty efficient in the paint, and their shooters also seem pretty good. How was South Carolina able to hold them to 36 points TOTAL for the game? That is very impressive!

Crooks, unfortunately, owned Jana on the post.
Actually the refs let own Jana, two of the fouls that were called on Jana should have been called on Crooks. I believe it was Kantner that called both of those fouls.

I hope every kid that has ever played any sport - male or female, any age, any level - at some point has the same amount of pure, unbridled, uncontrollable JOY as Ash had in that first quarter. That kid goes all out all the time, and it's nice to see her get rewarded by a performance like this one. First 14 points before Paige decided she didn't want to get shown up. :p

Having three legit scoring options on the floor at all times makes this team tough to beat. Now if we can only get the Ice/Jana duo to make a few layups and tip ins. Once they get USC behind them the focus of the conference schedule should be to force feed post players until they get better thru sheer repetition.
It was a pleasure to see Ashlynn having so much fun on the court last night. When you see someone playing with that amount of joy it’s contagious & brings everyone up. This was Ashlynn looking at the box score of the ND game- shrugging her shoulders & telling that box score that the ND game will not define her & her season. It just premiered the first episode of the Shade Show.

It was the AAC's championship game against USF where she went 10 for 10 on threes. Still PO'd that Geno took her out with over 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, she would have broken Sales' game high scoring record.

I realize that Jana and Ice are works in progress, particularly Jana. But this "mu hands were straight up" business is just silly. Here's what I saw, more than once: Their hands are somewhere between upright and halfway down when the opposing player approaches and initiates contact. As they separate, our player raises her arms to straight up and looks at the ref in wonderment.
Really?

The player guarding Ice is not within 10 feet of her. She is wide open for a reason. The other teams would love for her to shoot more.

Geno will never let that record be broken for whatever reason. Any time someone gets close they get removed from the game for the day. There were a few times Stewie could have broken it, but as soon as she got to about 40 she was done for the day.

Thanks jaydum I look forward to reading the other thread you created. Have to run but will deifinitely look at. Thanks!

I saw that too. They aren't really crowding Ash and Chen for example shooting 3's, but it's nothing like what they were doing with Ice yesterday and she wasn't far past the free throw line.

I am not recommending gambling here. But I do look at some of the odds every once in a while.

And I can’t believe Sarah Strong national player of the year odds aren’t better. You could go on to draft kings and bet $1 on Sarah Strong winning national player of the year; and if she won it… your payout would be $250. That seems like great value. It makes me think nationally… not everyone is clued in to how great Sarah has been.
