OT: I Hate Disney

I have a love/hate thing with Disney. I absolutely loved it as a kid. I've taken my daughter 3-4 times now and it is stupid expensive, crowded, and everything else. But I still get sentimental doing some of the things I did as a kid and seeing my child have that experience is fantastic. Unfortunately, that's often mitigated by all of the other "stuff."
 
Two of my favorite things about Disney that are just so "American" are:

1) Disney Foot or Disney Rash. Medically known as exercise induced vasculitis, it's basically a rash on the lower calf and ankle/foot area caused by fatsos who don't do anything physical, then walk way more than they're used to in the Florida heat.

2) Scooters for Hire. At one point, people with mobility scooters were "selling" their services to get families down low to the Disney park shows or into lighter lines. Basically, you and your family pay this fatso on a mobility scooter to go around the park with you, circumvent lines and get into the front area handicap seating. God bless America.

If you go to a Disney park without children you have some screws loose (with the obvious exception being drinking around the world at Epcot).

On (2), when I was a kid, we were going to Disneyworld, and the day before we were going down, my dad hurt his leg and couldn't really walk. So when we get to the park, we get him a wheelchair. Then when we started going to the rides, they (unexpectedly) start ushering us through the separate special line for disabled people. This goes on for 2 days. The morning of the 3rd day, my dad is going stir crazy and says he doesn't want be in the wheelchair anymore. We all go, get in the freaking wheelchair.

Clearly the point of Disney is to eventually create a large group of furries. I would not be surprised if they did the Adult Disney thing.

When I was at the WWL I often proclaimed I do not get Disney, I’m a Looney Tunes guy. Made me super popular.
 
We had a choice one year Disney or Universal Studios to take the kids...I really wanted Universal as I have no interest in Disney, and we had a blast with the Harry Potter attractions.
 
Disney World FL was fun to experience at different points in my life. I first went in 1973 when it was small and brand new. The big rides were the haunted house and 20,000 leagues under the sea submarine. I was 10 and went with my family when my grandparents moved to central FL. The I went with my family and another family when I was 17. Epcot and Space Mountain had just opened so those were a big deal. We stayed at the Polynesian Village. Then I went with some friends when I was in college. Beer was still cheap. Then in my mid 20's with my fiance who had never gone. Then 12 years later as a family with my parents, my sister and her 2 girls and our 2 girls. All the girls were between 6 and 10 so seeing it all through their eyes was fun. That's was about when the prices were getting crazy but my parent's treated us. LOL That was over 20 years ago and I've had no interest in going back.

Hagrid's Motorcycle Adventure is fantastic, one of the best roller coasters I've been on. The coaster in the Hogwart's castle is supposed to be really good too.

I live in Orlando and we end up at one of The Parks, as they're called, whenever someone visits. Parts of Disney are OK but too saccharine for me to take for too long. We prefer Epcot or Hollywood Studios at Disney (love the Rock'n Roller Coaster) Sea World has some good rides, the Manta is awesome, good option for a change. Universal is the best, IMO, lots of variety with a more grown up feel.

There are many decades of storylines in the marvel universe. The problem with dipping into Multiverse and alternative timelines is it starts being a lazy way to fix things right? Kill a character? Bring them back an alternative timeline or bring back his Multiverse double.

I also think the Avengers storylines, while decent movies that had a huge gross or problematic because you exhaust a lot of character interest across a broad range of characters in a single movie. That plus the single character movies have made the genre feel a bit tired.

Going to Disney as an adult is weird unless you binge drink....got it.
 
We moved to Florida 8 years ago. We located in central Florida about an hour from Disney. Purchased a season pass for the two of us. Went 2 or 3 times in two years. Didn't renew. Not worth the money.

100%. Disney Springs can be fun as well. Magic Kingdom is the one I'm pretty much done with now that my daughter is grown. Hollywood is fun, especially with the new Star Wars area. Animal Kingdom is meh. Universal is fun, definitely a more adult feel being able to grab a beer at Harry Potter world. The Hagrid ride is awesome. City Walk is a plus and we had a great time listening to live music at the Hard Rock hotel bar.
 
Costs increased from like $40 to $200 in twenty years.

Take your kids to Quassy, Lake Compounce, or Six Flags if you live around here.

There was one point where I was taking a picture of her and there were like 10 other families waiting to take the same picture and I thought "What a special manufactured memory. I get the same picture of my kid as a billion other families."

I enjoy going to Disney and am an adult. Although the second half of that sentence is debatable
 
1. Adult only Disney is weird. No need for context or explanation. Just weird.
2. Adult only Epcot is much different. Especially doing beers of the world. Same for Universal. Much more normal for adults only to be there.
3. @StllH8L8ner is right. Take kids when they are 8-12 years old and do it once. They need to be old enough to walk on their own and be able to function somewhat normally.
4. There are a bazillion other ways to spend the same amount of money and have a better vacation.
5. Hulu+ is the way to go for the streaming and bundling. You get the full Disney suite built-in. Only thing YTTV is worth getting is for NFL package.
6. Last few times we went to a Disney themed park it was for the water park- Beach Blizzard. Kids liked that way better.

It still cracks me up remembering a student's mother calling to say she was taking her kids out of school for a week to go to Disney World. We were always told "sorry for the inconvenience, but it's too expensive during school vacation week."

This happened several times a year, every year.

When I ran into a dad and asked about the Disney World trip, they all pretty much said, "don't get me started on those freakin' brainwashing con artists. We go every year. Any idea what that costs?"

Actually, I do. A few years ago a neighbor's wife died unexpectedly. I was encouraged by other friends and neighbors to start a gofundme campaign to send him, his sister, and his two young daughters to Disney World for a week. The tickets were bought and paid for, then nobody donated.

It cost me a little under $9k.

People suck. So does Disney.

Maybe for some people, but the lines aren't bad when you have the fast pass and if you pick a good time of year to go
