Forget what article I read but family is very important to Hurley and he turned down D1 offers previously before going to Wagner because they were too far from where he and his wife lived. Seems he wants to stay somewhat close to ny/nj area.

Pitt is a hike. Not an easy/ short trip to ny/nj
Part of the reason he didn't take the Rutgers job is because, he didn't want to move is family right now ...He has at least one child in High school...He could commute to UConn...Tom Moore commutes to URI from Tolland...This is huge imo

...or is he just, you know, a troll?

Goodman reminds me of a Shallow Hal character. Glamorized to be a handsome reporter, but when Hal sees clearly after ESPN’s budget cuts, he sees Goodman’s real face.

If Pitt offers twice what we do, he's not coming here.

You get what you pay for.

True, but he could come here. Win in a relatively top heavy conference. Compete for NC or go to Pitt and be 4th place at best for a long time.

If he's good at what he does.

So, I have been reading everything and listening to what folks here have to say, and all signs point to Danny Hurley as our next coach. Seriously, we are not hearing anything else. Where there is smoke is a fairly accurate adage.

I think Calhoun has endorsed him as the next coach.
Benedict doesn't make moves without knowing his next one.
So much chatter about both sides expressing interest.
National rumors gathering steam.

All these things add up. Hurley is an up and coming coach and the Uconn job is a step up in both prestige and dollars. It's like boxing, he's ready to move up.

What I really like about Hurley is that I think he is hungry to win, to make his mark as a winning coach in the higher echelons of college basketball. He's hungry to be successful and compete at the highest levels.

I'm starting to get pumped. C'mon, let's win some championships.

If Hurley gets Pitt to consistently be 4th in the ACC every year, he's going to be in the top 25 every season and he's getting a big raise. They have a pretty strong history, too, and you don't have to go back too far for them to have been a very strong program. I think we're the better job, but if Pitt literally doubles what we're offering like some here are suggesting, I seriously doubt Hurley turns down that much money. He could buy his family plane tickets every weekend if the commute is that rough.

If that's the case, I would pass. There are others that could turn out to be better options. If he comes I will behind him 100% but just like any of the likely candidates, there are questions. We have to be willing to walk away if someone else wants to overpay. At this stage in his career and given the unknowns, we shouldn't be overpaying.

4th in the ACC seems almost unrealistic though. Figure you have Duke, UNC and Virgina pretty entrenched as the top 3 in that league. I understand Syracuse is struggling, and Louisville is kind of in a unknown area. You still have Notre Dame, Miami, NC State, Florida State, and an improving Clemson and Virginia Tech. If you include Ville and Syracuse, that is 8 teams you have to leap over. And they literally didn't win a game in that league last year.

Whereas at UCONN, you only have to improve a little and we are Top 3 in this league.

At best. Won't be consistently 4th. NC st, Clemson, Ville, Cuse. At best.

I don't even care what place he finishes in a conference; we finished 9th in 2011 but won the national championship. My point is, he can build a program just as easily at Pitt as he could here, and if we try to short him on salary like that one poster suggested, I'm sure he would take what I would imagine is a much better offer from a P6 school (most likely Pitt).

The word is he is will get paid here. I don't think the money is an issue.

Lol I know they don't actually believe that. We literally spend twice as much money on Men's basketball, had 80% more attendance last year despite having a terrible season.

Look at you thinking fanbases are rational.

They totally believe it. Same as VCU fans did a few years ago.

If Hurley comes and Jalen stays, we're a top 3 team in the AAC next year. Obviously nothing to crow about, but a good coach gets us 5-6 more conference wins than we had this past season.
Are we?

His wife's father had recently passed away. At the last minute she decided she didn't want to leave her mom alone.

He shouldn't get more than half of Ollie's salary. We way overpaid Ollie. We shouldn't make the same mistake again. I think half of Ollie's salary is still 2 1/2 times what Hurley makes at URI. Let him prove himself before we pay the kind of money Ollie was given. He's not going to Pitt. He knows UConn is a far better opportunity with less risk of failure. Plus his kids don't have to be disrupted from the schools they are in if he's at UConn.

You're not going to lure him with $1.5m. We had a NC winning coach, the $3m was a lot, but not egregious given his stature at the time (and with the call of the NBA). The problem was the buyout.

This list doesn't include everybody (like Ollie), but it's decently comprehensive:

USA TODAY Sports

47 schools on this list are north of $2million dollars. This includes powerhouses such as NCSt, Bama, Baylor, Nebraska, KSU, and our own WSU. Even Providence is at $2.2m. UCONN cannot be south of it and hope to get a viable candidate.

$1.5m is what Pikiell is making at Rutgers of all places. Ollie's used to be top 10. Now it's Top 15 and falling.

Like it or not, the market for college coaches salaries has risen.

State institutions should not be allowed to be reckless with taxpayers. money, especially in a state as broke as Connecticut. It is not like Hurley stands head & shoulders above other alternatives. Hopefully DB learned a lesson with Ollie's contract the need to negotiate well and not overpay but I don't have a lot of confidence given this administration's track record. $1.5 million or move on to other candidates. I bet Otzelberger or Konkol would be excited to sign a $1 million contract and either one might prove to be a better choice in the long-term. Hurley is the most obvious choice but not necessarily the best choice.

When you look at this list the vast majority are much more experienced than Hurley. That said, we won't pay less than PC.

If Hurley gets Pitt to consistently be 4th in the ACC every year, he's going to be in the top 25 every season and he's getting a big raise. They have a pretty strong history, too, and you don't have to go back too far for them to have been a very strong program. I think we're the better job,

It's easier to recruit to P5 schools, but it's definitely a lot harder to win in the ACC. Top 4 every year is ambitious to say the least. Leaving aside Duke/UNC, you are fighting 12 other well heeled schools for a few slots.

Interestingly, Pitt would have to change the basketball culture from a historical perspective. Traditionally, they got a lot of tough, junkyard dog types, which worked well in the Big East. The ACC is more of a finesse/skills oriented league, and I just don't think that brand of basketball works there. It's one of the reasons I think they flamed out of the tournament every time. If it wasn't a rock fight, they struggled.

Overall, I think Pitt is a harder job to win at right now. jmo
