I dunno about that. I'd much rather coach Houston or one of the directional Floridas over teams like Illinois, Vanderbilt, Kansas, etc. You've got literally no chance of winning with some of those programs, whereas with the high level G5 teams you can have two good years and then get almost any job in America
To me this makes that job more attractive. You don't have to keep nearly as much dead weight as it's running itself off.
This is an almost unprecedented opportunity to basically get a P5 expansion program.
New coach would run off any players he didn't want anyways so not sure it can possibly factor as a positive.
but how many times do you see it happen all at once like this?
Maybe 8 over 2-3 years, not in a week.
Fine, I'll mock you.Pitt is in the ACC. UConn is in the AAC. Pitt has P5 money. UConn is broke. Pitt is at the bottom of the ACC. UConn is near the bottom of the AAC. Boneyarders think a guy with a busted shoulder is going to miraculously lead UConn to the promised land of the NCAA tourney. Pitt will likely get all new players and start over. UConn will have the same players that they had last season for the most part. I wouldn't be mocking Pitt.
He would run off every player he didn't see a future for and try to re-recruit anyone with a pulse. I understand what your thought process was but I very much disagree. Having 4 players on a team is never a benefit, especially if your name is not John Calipari and the date is mid-March.
Disagree on the finances. Basketball revenues are driven by attendance, donations, and NCAA credits. UConn basketball can hold it's own on attendance and donations and hopefully, the AAC can become a better basketball conference and generate NCAA credits. Schools like UConn will spend on basketball because they can make money in basketball and it helps subsidize the athletic department. But with the money disparity you have to wonder how long non-P5s can stay on that level without P5 money. UConn's athletic dept isnt' exactly swimming in cash.
And I completely understand your point of view. I get it.
It is late in the game.
But like I said, if you're the right coach and you can bring a bunch of your recruits with you, it really be a good building block.
Hurley is a great example. or fi they went with Oats and had 2 4 star frosh right away in that lineup.
they're not gonna be good year 1, but they were a dumpster fire this year. At least now they'd have a future.
Like it was with MAL?
They have classes at Louisville?Sure is a fun time to be the son of a UConn-Pitt marriage, with a daughter taking classes at Louisville.
No matter how you spin it, recruiting for 9 spots on your roster is incredibly difficult and daunting at the least for a new coach coming in. How do you allocate your time to fill those holes?

We didn't let MAL out to join KO at a new school.
Aside from the money and conference prestige, I'm trying to think how Pitt is going to pitch this job to Hurley. You've got three guys returning from team coming off an 0-18 season in conference play. The conference is a nice sell, but Pitt will never be one of the best teams in the ACC, so you undertake this huge rebuilding effort just to crack the top 8 in the ACC? Dixon got Pitt to 5th place in the ACC in 2014 and was still fired. Such unrealistic expectations. He would run off every player he didn't see a future for and try to re-recruit anyone with a pulse. I think there were rumblings he was going to be fired, then he left.I thought Dixon just left and wasn't fired.
Correct, but he might as well have been fired - Pitt lowered his buyout, essentially letting him walk.I thought Dixon just left and wasn't fired.
Yes, it's often best to compare the best programs in one conference with the worst programs in another.OK, for those who can’t see why Pitt could be a better job, don’t they play Duke, Carolina, Virginia and a bunch of schools better than we play? What about tv exposure? We play ECU and Tulane, Tulsa. Our glamour game is Cincy!

A lot of people are quick to make the assumption that the players the coach is working with is the cause for failure. The pieces UConn has could be good, if there was a competent coach.
This comparison is a stretch, but I’m going to throw it out there nonetheless. Kolbe Cathedral in Bridgeport was a juggernaut of a program for years before coach Pfohl left and our beloved Chris Smith took over. The program went into the pits and went something like 5-37 in the last three seasons.
This year, Pfohl returned as coach and took the same kids that won one game last year and has them in the state championship game this year. Four of the starters were the same as last year and one freshman starts. Again I’m not saying this is a perfect comparison, but the fact is the same kids played the same teams as last year and with a good coach vastly improved. There’s no reason with a good coach like Hurley the boys at UConn couldn’t do the same.
How many of those Pitt guys would you want to keep anyway?
Again, there's an implicit (and wrong) assumption that every P5 job is better than any non-P5.Assuming salary is in the same ballpark how would Pitt be a better choice? Even without having to start from scratch they are basically the little sisters of the poor to Tobacco Road and Virgina in the ACC. If a rebuild is what Hurley wants than UConn offers a much clearer road.
