Godfrey commits to Memphis

Not sure if this post is a joke or not?

Our admissions standards are much lower then Duke's, for both athletes and non-athletes, and it is not a debate.

Duke has a 13%, UConn is 44%. So lets put this nonsense to bed.

Quoting overall admission rates tells us nothing about admissions standards for athletes. A friend of mine used to teach at Duke and he said admissions would bend tremendously for basketball players. He had multiple players in his classes that would not have gotten onto the Duke campus without a tour pass if they weren't capable of scoring more than 10 ppg. I'm sure UConn gives significant leeway to athletes as well, but there's been no evidence provided that it is more or less than other universities engaged in big time athletics.

You watch college basketball. And sometimes you don't because people didn't pay attention.

Didn't read the whole thread, but what exactly did Selvie do wrong? He was a Juco, but how are you pinning our crappy academic performance solely on him? There are many guys who shat on our APR. Leave Johnnie Time out of this!

Perhaps I misrepresented myself -- I enjoyed Selvie very much as a player. I was referring to the legal trouble, which admittedly did come after his playing career was over. One JUCO doesn't throw the team's academic reputation; in fact, I have no idea what Selvie's grades looked like. But someone severely lacking in common sense and with a tendency to misbehave is not somebody I would go out of my way to put on the team, especially seeing as upperclassmen are looked to be leaders on the team. Where Godfrey relates to this -- look, I'm not dumb, I know most college kids enjoy pot, but if you don't have the wherewithal to keep yourself out of trouble for it, I don't think that sets the right example. KO seems to be huge on building a high-character team, and I don't know if Godfrey fits his mold as that type of player.

That being said, I could be completely off the mark. Godfrey may have cleaned up his act and become the most upstanding citizen out there, and I'm just some jerk on the internet.

It's not a half truth at all...if your standards are higher than the NCAAs, that's on you. We meet the guidelines laid out by the NCAA as that's all we're required to do.

You just don't get it, you said the NCAA sets the standard and not Memphis. That is blatantly untrue, I was being nice by saying it was a half-truth. The NCAA sets a minimum, Memphis then sets it's standard at or above that minimum. The part I was saying was a half-truth was that Memphis had no say in setting it's standards, it has complete control. Memphis chooses the minimum and is the entity solely in control of setting that as the standard. The NCAA doesn't tell Memphis to set it's standards so low, only that it can.

The NCAA does not set standards only minimums, they are inherently different things even though sometimes they overlap. Do you get my point now?

You keep saying it without a shred of evidence. Unless, you have sources as good as Chief, which in that case, sorry, will not question it again...

The best example was Sean Dockery. His high school info was leaked and he got into Duke with something like a 2.2 high school GPA and a 15 on his ACT. Barely qualified to be able to play.

So your saying each conference should standardize their standardization standards?

We strengthen our frontcourt and that is all the matters. Really don't care about this whole academic debate.
Hopefully he works hard on the court and in the classroom. If he doesn't do what is needed with the books that could hurt Memphis down the road.

Oh well……that is not on Mr Godfrey anymore it's on the school who takes the chance. I agree we don't want one of our leagues best programs getting busted but they're running on that fence as we speak!

No, I couldnt care less if Memphis chooses to wear the dunce cap. I'm just pointing out its inaccurate to say they (Memphis) are not in charge of setting their standards and it's the NCAA that sets it.

So you're all up in arms because I said "the NCAA sets the standards"

Instead of "the NCAA sets the minimum standards"

Clearly this is something I understood, because I went on to say: "if your standards are higher than the NCAAs, that's on you. We meet the guidelines laid out by the NCAA as that's all we're required to do"

Talk about arguing over minutiae, you must be a lawyer.

I could just as easily say: Memphis didn't tell the NCAA to set it's standards so low, only they could do that.

Folks said the same things about Geron Johnson and Mike Dixon...they both graduated from Memphis.

You are the one that jumped on one sentence of what I wrote to "coreect" me, when you clearly had no clue what I was saying.

Clearly you didn't get it and from the looks of it, still don't judging from the silliness of you last sentence, but that's OK.

If I'm frustrated at anything, it's having to explain things to a simpleton.

I was referencing the admission rates to shoot down the absurd notion of the poster I was replying to who said UConn was harder to get into then Duke for non athletes.

Obviously they mean nothing for athletes.

You are the one that jumped on one sentence of what I wrote to "coreect" me, when you clearly had no clue what I was saying. Oh God! I misspelled a word! These are truly the end times. I don't give a @&$? about your sentence structure. But you called a liar, which was total, unadulterated, BS.

Clearly you didn't get it and from the looks of it, still don't judging from the silliness of you last sentence, but that's OK. Clearly, you can't read.

If I'm frustrated at anything, it's having to explain things to a simpleton. Arguing over simple minutiae is not the same thing as explaining something. Hell, I shouldn't need to explain that to you.

Good for Memphis, sucks for us. Their admission policy isn't going to keep UConn from being UConn. We did go 3-0 against them last year.

We were too busy going 2-0 against Louisville...we get years to do battle with UConn/Cincy...they needed a swift kick in the ass on their way out.
