I would love to sit in on a Memphis admissions meeting.

"This transcript is printed on paper! Real paper!"

"Approved!!"

And please, Memphis fans, save the impassioned defenses of your academic honor - somebody has to be the lender of last resort, so to speak, and it be you.

I'm taking bets on how long it takes UofMemphis to find this thread and defend his school's academic integrity. Over/under is set at 1 hour. Any takers?

I'm not really even criticizing them here - they do what they gotta do and so be it.

But I don't want to read any claims to the contrary. This is their reputation, they've had it forever and they've earned it. I could draw eyes and a mouth on an eggplant and it'd get past Memphis' admissions

Something was cleared up for me - I stopped reading the other thread, so not sure if this has been mentioned.

Godfrey isn't a graduate transfer. Southern has been banned from the postseason due to their APR issues and Godfrey has been sprung Oriakhi-style. I'm sure that's why UConn admissions didn't want to entertain this one.

Calvin Godfrey, a 6-9, 210-pound power forward who spent last season at Southern, will transfer to Memphis and be eligible immediately under the APR waiver. Southern is banned from the NCAA tournament this season due to underperforming APR scores.

Godfrey was also considering UConn. He said the Huskies, for reasons he was unable to explain, couldn't "get [me] into the program."

Memphis makes Louisville look like a bastion of academic standards.

Yet Louisville got into the conference that some said had concerns about our academics - you see it's all BS and all about Football, money and winning - the rest is a smokescreen that we have bought into.

Don't think the Memphis faithful can come here saying they are playing on a level playing field now……..they aren't when it comes to admissions obviously!

I mean LSU backed off too? Yikes:rolleyes:

Cunningham, who’s spent the last two seasons in junior college, has split time at point guard with redshirt freshman Pookie Powell in the Tigers’ four practices thus far for their four-game exhibition tour in Canada later this month.

With Memphis thin on experience at point guard, Cunningham has a chance to earn one of the Tigers’ two open scholarships if he qualifies academically and continues to prove that he can be a dependable option as a floor leader.

In two junior college seasons at New Mexico Military Institute and Kaskaskia College in Illinois, Cunningham averaged 12.8 points and 4.4 assists in 59 games. Though he’s not the natural scorer or athlete that Powell is, Cunningham, a former state title-winning point guard at Rickards High in Tallahassee, Florida, appears to be a quick learner and has looked just as comfortable as Powell as the point man in coach Josh Pastner’s system.

"It's true," said Godfrey, who averaged 13.1 points and 8.8 boards as a junior at Southern last season.

"Coach Pastner is a good young coach and I like his style of play. I watched (the Tigers) a lot last year. I think I'll be able to fit by just giving everything I've got every night."

Godfrey will provide some much-needed depth behind returning forwards Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols. Southern granted Godfrey his release this month, and he'll be eligible to play immediately because of the school's APR (academic progress rate) issues. The Jaguars are ineligible for postseason play because they didn't meet NCAA APR requirements.

they will both get 1 year scholarships.

Sorry UofMemphis l like and respect you but you are lucky if you have half a leg to stand on here. We can't let him in because of academics but you can and we're in the same league? Something wrong my friend……LSU? That's laughable if they said no……….whatever.

Is it still possible he could commit as a grad transfer to UConn next year?;)

UConn has higher admission standards than Memphis...I don't deny that...but we meet NCAA standards, and graduate players.

Forbes rated the colleges in the AAC:

Navy - 27
SMU - 101
Tulane - 147
UCONN - 164
Tulsa - 213
Houston - 309
Cincinnati - 391
Temple - 397
UCF - 405
USF - 435
East Carolina - 501
Memphis - 609

As much as I relied on RateMyProfessors.com, using that website to rank academics is preposterous.

Tough to take that Forbes list too seriously.

Basketball players are allowed into UCONN with less academic standing than their classmates all the time. But obviously not that low. So Memphis took him and a coach with 3 great recruits for sons. All the more power to them.
But that is not us.

That's a half truth at best, the NCAA sets a minimum, schools then self impose their own minimums. Some set it as close to the NCAA minimum as possible some are (much) higher and some vacillate depending on circumstances.

If it's true this kid didn't/wouldn't have qualified at UConn, then Memphis has at least two kids who couldn't have played at UConn due to their academics (Iverson being the second). Not saying UConn hasn't stooped lower in the past but right now they are pretty strict on the criteria involved with admitting a kid.

Graduating from and maintaining eligibility at Memphis is nice but again it's harder to get a degree and even just stay eligible at some schools than others. Apples and oranges.

APR fiasco changed that quite a bit from what I have been told.

It's not a half truth at all...if your standards are higher than the NCAAs, that's on you. We meet the guidelines laid out by the NCAA as that's all we're required to do.
