Geno calls out men's team fans for reaction after Creighton loss

As I understand what Gino is saying and Probaby meant. Fans show support multiple ways. But what Gino’s and Dan want is for fans to spend money on their programs. Winning will bring in that money. Entertaining basketball will bring in that money. Fans money and time should not be taking for granted. If the product isn’t what it should be for the cost associate with being a fan fans will complain. The effort against Creighton was not up to the standards Dan has set for his Huskies. Most fans were reacting to that. I’m sure there were some that went too far. I for one was pissed at that effort. Some on the media went as far to say that we were no longer title contenders. That’s how bad that effort was. I’m sure Gino also knows that if that effort against Creighton was the norm there would be a lot less fans of UConn basketball.

Have you ever been in a game chat? We're idiots.
Best thing I did for my sanity was to stop going into the chat room. it sucks you in to the dark side of fandom. I also try not to post in game threads until next morning when I've digested the game, good or bad.

I like what Geno had to say and there have definitely been people that question why so and so is on the roster.

Totally get that, and I appreciate the moderation of the boards, but just to be clear, I have never made the kind of comments you're talking about, in game chat or anywhere else. Your post, unintentionally I'm sure, kind of sounded like you were suggesting that I had.
I don't doubt the sincerity or validity of your self-defense, though I also didn't read it as though you were included.
Again, though, Geno isn't talking about game chats, or post that you guys have, properly, no doubt, deleted. In an event, it's kind of an unforced era to go there when the reporters question Tea him up to celebrate a men's basketball win. Instead, he decided to go after their fans.
It's illuminating to read the variety of responses, including how a number of posters whose contributions I value, respect, and enjoy disagree with me and vice versa.

It's time to mention that in March, the agitators, trolls, and haters swell the population inhabiting this forum. Beware, we are teammates here.

He ain't wrong. I'm moving my seats for next year if I can because 6 of them sit right behind me in Hartford and don't shut up with the nonsense for 2+ hours every game.
There are some people in Gampel who seem to genuinely hate being there, screaming negatively at Hurley and our players all game, and I can’t understand why they keep shelling out money for season tickets.

I skipped this board after the Creighton loss because I didn't want to read the overreactions, but I also feel like real fans -- however emotional or irrational -- have a right to criticize the team's play.

I don't know what comments Geno was responding to, or where he read them, but it's not like people here were singling out players and wishing them harm or telling them to transfer, were they? Were people being that gross even on Twitter? Seems unlikely.

I guess where I come out is: people shouldn't wet their panties and be abusive, but Geno also doesn't need to chime in on everything. Remember his comments suggesting Hurley should take the Lakers job?

Miserable, small people who think they’re way smarter and knowledgeable than they are.

Well said Geno!

There is a line that I have seen crossed many times by fans either at the game or on the Boneyard. Geno pointed out the distinction between real fans and assho** fans. Maybe he could have indicated assho** comments instead to better define some of the things he read but totally understand where he is coming from. Think we all have had criticisms about the team at times but then have also seen assho** comments which he is getting at.

Hopefully his comments will make some posters and fans at the game think twice about what they say before the say it. So then fans won’t have to post a message at a later date that they “take back” their comment or have to “eat crow” the day or days after.

I'm not familiar with the chat and don't know the context, but I do know that EVERY fan base in the world acts like ours. It's part of being a fan. Geno is THE GOAT coach of all sports forever; however, this is a bad look. Sometimes he says stupid stuff.

had one next to us last season, constantly critiquing and yelling at our players, didn't matter how well we were doing or how much we were up in the game, something wasn't up to his standards. Also would salt the yelling with curses, what a nightmare. One of the only nice perks of the re-shuffling of season ticket holders is he's not in our new section.

He is 100% right. Not an incorrect word said. That is why I don't accept the ridiculous reactionary unfair vitriol some spew on this board AFTER CLOSE WINS, not to mention losses. We are fans. Not coaches. We should be supporting our guys, it's the only thing we can do to actually help them win, which is what we all want. Good on Geno.

And the absolute worst is the vitriol spewed on social media, where the players absolutely see it. It. Does. Not. Help. Anyone.

He said it so Dan won't have to. My guess is they've talked about the subject and agree.

This is a whole lot of nothing. Geno doesn't have a filter, it's one of the things I like about him. I like Geno and I consider him an , it's a term of endearment. The whole takes one to know one thing.

Geno talks about how his players play lazy and suck at things on the court when they win by 50 and he criticizes the fans who pay money to go to the women's games. The fans of course can do the same.

Some fans tend to be pollyanna cheerleader types, some tend to be more negative sky is falling types, and some are more the call balls and strikes type (point out the good and the bad.) Whichever way you are doesn't make you a better or worse fan.

One thing I've never understood is going to the games to yell at the players and if you make things personal you've crossed the line.

I have the same sentiments and I get where Geno is coming from, but I just don't get why people are OK with Geno calling fans balloon knots. You just don't do that. Call them out for being too negative or over reacting. Even if there are so many balloon knots as he is suggesting, too bad. They help pay for the programs. If the coaches don't like the criticism, take a job in another state where fans are used to losing. Seriously, it's ok for people to disagree with great coaches once in a while.

edit: I'm getting a ton of thumbs downs from posters I've never seen before. must be flooding over from the women's board to defend their hero. that must be thing over there 😂

You've gotten multiple from me and I post all the time. You're incorrect, but I respect your right to be incorrect :)

And I respect your right to be wrong as well. Because you are wrong. I'm not gonna go around giving dislikes though.

Why defend the jerk fans? He’s only calling out the jerk fans. Not all donors are jerks, just the jerky ones. I’m a donor and I’m not offended. I’m not alone.

Geno was the guy being a jerk. You don't call your fans balloon knots. We don't even know what the heck he was referring to. Could be one post, but he makes it sound like it was hundreds of posts. I'm not afraid to say the great one was wrong, because he was. No need to demean the program by saying we have lousy fans and that is exactly what he did. Lousy job by geno. and his cult.
