Geno calls out men's team fans for reaction after Creighton loss

Just to clarify, you've never seen that from me. Ever.

I also guarantee that Geno isn't in the men's chat for the games, so that isn't what he's talking about.

He absolutely has been critical of the women's team fans as well. Honestly, I think that's a bad look too, but he gets more leeway when he stays on his side of the street.

I'm a huge Geno fan, as virtually everyone should be, but, this was kind of an unforced era and entirely unnecessary. There are ways to be supportive of the men's program without calling fanspasstholes.
Totally agree. He took a softball question and turned it into something negative. Completely unnecessary.

I don't spend time in the game chats as I prefer paying full attention to the games but having spent nearly a quarter century on different iterations of this board, I can imagine how bad the chat room gets in cases such as the Creighton game.

I also know all too well that many of our fans are exactly as Geno described them. We have many who currently behave as if it's beneath them to be stuck with a team that may possibly end up with a double digit kenpom rating or worse, not be a prohibitive favorite to win the NCAA tournament.

We need to own up to our behavior. If you don't like hearing what Geno said, don't behave in a manner gives him the opportunity to say it.

I agree that fans are crazy. But, in general, that is much, much better than having fans that don't care.

As Oscar Wilde said, There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.

What the hell is he even referring to. Where are all of these heinous comments. I don't criticize players but people certainly have a right to criticize coaches. You don't call your fans balloon knots when they are the folks supporting your program. PC fans are balloon knots. UConn fans are not. Geno has our own fanbase turning against the program.

The thing I agree with Geno's sentiment is that fans will judge too harshly. They feel they are 100% correct with some criticism but they can never have 100% of the information. Since I know I dont have all the information about why my team played poorly and Im emotional, I know to step back and not over react.

Only having 7 days between the lowest of lows and highest of highs made it apparent how irrational fans are. I don't think the fans have necessarily done anything wrong but those who were dishing it on Thurs/Fri should be able to take it too

You’re only seeing the stuff that’s ok to post on the board

Totally get that, and I appreciate the moderation of the boards, but just to be clear, I have never made the kind of comments you're talking about, in game chat or anywhere else. Your post, unintentionally I'm sure, kind of sounded like you were suggesting that I had.

Again, though, Geno isn't talking about game chats, or post that you guys have, properly, no doubt, deleted. In an event, it's kind of an unforced era to go there when the reporters question teed him up to celebrate a men's basketball win. Instead, he decided to go after their fans.

I'm untroubled by what Geno said.

I would have worded his final sentence with a different emphasis, but that's a minor individual difference. I didn't go all in on the Women's team until Paige's freshman season, and I never imagined I'd watch just shy of every game of both teams; probably a healthy majority of pre- and post-game both head coach interviews; many player interviews; and lots of Instagram content, particularly related to the Women's team.

I already belabor that I sequester my strongest in-the-moment comments within my in-game texting with my forever "little sister." No chat room for me, criticism inevitably implied, but that's a me issue more than a you/them issue.

It's the end of February tomorrow, and the door remains plausibly open for both teams to attain their coaches' 4 stated ambitions:

Big East regular season champs
Big East tournament champs
NCAA Regional champs
NCAA National champs

The players and coaches have both thanked their fans publicly, and Senior Night has been celebrated once with one more to go. Farewells to People's Bank have been said by 2 undefeated teams.

Functionally speaking, in the context of team goals, every game is one and done, though it is only literally true that the NCAA Tournament is season-endingbin the event of a loss.

My fondest wish is that the season is only ¾ complete. That's not a fantasy wish, and a number of other programs have non-fantasy wishes for their team. UConn's non-fantasy wish applies to both teams.

Come together, right now.

Pretty sure the pope has given the game chat a dispensation. What happens in the chat should stay in the chat.
Maybe for Villanova fans...

There is a bit of irony to this. I firmly remember Geno saying something to the extent of “I’m in support of paying players as long as I can fire them as well” when the discussion about paying players started to gain traction a few years back. But fans can’t criticize the team for poor performance? Just my opinion, the game completely changed once this happened. Some of these players are making generational money - more than the average Joe will in 30-40 years.

As I understand what Gino is saying and Probaby meant. Fans show support multiple ways. But what Gino’s and Dan want is for fans to spend money on their programs. Winning will bring in that money. Entertaining basketball will bring in that money. Fans money and time should not be taking for granted. If the product isn’t what it should be for the cost associate with being a fan fans will complain. The effort against Creighton was not up to the standards Dan has set for his Huskies. Most fans were reacting to that. I’m sure there were some that went too far. I for one was pissed at that effort. Some on the media went as far to say that we were no longer title contenders. That’s how bad that effort was. I’m sure Gino also knows that if that effort against Creighton was the norm there would be a lot less fans of UConn basketball.

Have you ever been in a game chat? We're idiots.
Best thing I did for my sanity was to stop going into the chat room. it sucks you in to the dark side of fandom. I also try not to post in game threads until next morning when I've digested the game, good or bad.

I like what Geno had to say and there have definitely been people that question why so and so is on the roster.

I don't doubt the sincerity or validity of your self-defense, though I also didn't read it as though you were included.

It's illuminating to read the variety of responses, including how a number of posters whose contributions I value, respect, and enjoy disagree with me and vice versa.

It's time to mention that in March, the agitators, trolls, and haters swell the population inhabiting this forum. Beware, we are teammates here.

He ain't wrong. I'm moving my seats for next year if I can because 6 of them sit right behind me in Hartford and don't shut up with the nonsense for 2+ hours every game.
There are some people in Gampel who seem to genuinely hate being there, screaming negatively at Hurley and our players all game, and I can’t understand why they keep shelling out money for season tickets.

I skipped this board after the Creighton loss because I didn't want to read the overreactions, but I also feel like real fans -- however emotional or irrational -- have a right to criticize the team's play.

I don't know what comments Geno was responding to, or where he read them, but it's not like people here were singling out players and wishing them harm or telling them to transfer, were they? Were people being that gross even on Twitter? Seems unlikely.

I guess where I come out is: people shouldn't wet their panties and be abusive, but Geno also doesn't need to chime in on everything. Remember his comments suggesting Hurley should take the Lakers job?

Well said Geno!

There is a line that I have seen crossed many times by fans either at the game or on the Boneyard. Geno pointed out the distinction between real fans and assho** fans. Maybe he could have indicated assho** comments instead to better define some of the things he read but totally understand where he is coming from. Think we all have had criticisms about the team at times but then have also seen assho** comments which he is getting at.

Hopefully his comments will make some posters and fans at the game think twice about what they say before the say it. So then fans won’t have to post a message at a later date that they “take back” their comment or have to “eat crow” the day or days after.
