UConn could add more revenue to conference overall by increased viewership of basketball games. It's cost benefit analysis thing.

This would make sense if they took UConn's pro rata share have UConn take say 12 million for the duration of the contract and add the remaining 18 million to the bonus pool. In that scenario it makes sense because they have to add money to be available to pay in an unequal revenue sharing withou squashing the existing members.

If Syracuse or BC were more desirable from a TV perspective, you can be sure they would be on ABC/ESPN.

I think there is a built-in presumption in that hypothetical that ESPN would pay for our addition in a revenue, neutral manner, i.e. give us a full share. Given our lack of bargaining power, the ACC wouldn't necessarily have to distribute that full share to us. I could see that potentially getting the votes to pass because the FSU/Clemson block, which traditionally would vote against us, might vote for us if they thought that the excess amount that we receive was going to go to them.

You're trying to imbue logic into the ACC's CR dealings, but as their last few additions have shown, they don't think logically at all. By they way, I agree with you, but you know as well as I that the ACC has screwed up their past few decisions, and I don't think they'll get that "Eureka!" moment when it comes to UConn.

  • Why would FSU & Clemson vote to accept more money in the ACC? Probably because they won't win their lawsuit. They still won't make P2 $$ and they will be signing yet another bad contract just to save face. Doesn't make much sense
  • Why would anyone vote to expand with programs like UConn? UConn brings $$ regardless of how it is shared and there is strength in numbers
  • The market will eventually prevail. The P2 are the P2. The Big XII has proactively made very solid moves to make it #3 going forward. OSU and WSU have been relegated to G# status. The ACC is fighting against the Tsunami which will not last

It would not shock me if UConn is now having quiet discussions with ACC about joining. Duke may be one of our supporters.
 
From the ESPN article........

The model outlined in Dellenger’s report is closely modeled after what Florida State AD Michael Alford proposed in February 2023. Schools that produce better television ratings in football would see a larger share of revenue.

Whether Florida State and Clemson would agree to this compromise after openly suing the league is another matter. Dellenger’s report mentioned the league’s Grant of Rights may be shortened as part of the deal.

A source familiar with the matter told Tomahawk Nation the league’s Grant of Rights would need to be shortened to 2030 as part of the deal in order to get buy in from FSU and Clemson. That year coincides with the Big Ten’s next television contract renewal.

Excellent analysis. Once the ACC has stability, it will start looking for ways to remain stable. That means adding schools that increase their revenue in football and hoops. We are the top of that list for the ACC. We are the marquis hoops program in the country. That matters. Plus, the Big 12 commissioner gave us a boost by identifying us as juicy target for expansion (even if a minority of goobers in the Big 12 athletics departments didn't have the foresight to see that he was right). We fit academically and geographically with the ACC. This will happen.

Well, it's not like any other school in the ACC can bully the conference for more money. And if other schools get pissed and their eyes start wandering at other conferences it still helps FSU and Clemson.

I think this is generally correct. But as to why FSU and Clemson would take this new route, what choice do they have? I’m pretty sure they aren’t heading to the SEC/Big 10. So even if they win their suit, I think a low probability, what do they win? I guess they couldbrenegotiate their ACC deal or move to the B12. Unlikely worth the effort.

For the mid-tier ACC schools, they are worried they will end up with nothing but if they had a competent commissioner they could be and probably beat, the Big 12. It has better brands.

To me Clemson is the one who lost the most in tying their future to FSU. They were never the brand that FSU is. Nobody is saying “do whatever it takes to land Clemson”. They are more of a B-list team that got hot for a couple of years than a perennial power. As a brand they are Washington, not Michigan.

Unfortunately, there are no more chairs at the table. The ACC has a lot of great teams and fans.
They need to regroup and create a strong brand.

If the GOR ends in 2030, FSU, Clemson etc. can leave a few years before and not pay a huge amount. That means the ACC very well may have seats at the table soon.

If basketball mattered. UConn would be in the Big 12 already, or even the B1G. But it doesn't. I don't see the ACC expanding if FSU and Clemson remain. Sadly, UConn football remains abysmal. Ranked 126 at this time.

Just remember the GOR of the ACC will likely expire in 2030 under the new plan. Some of the remaining schools have strong basketball programs.

They still would have to pay the exit fee which is $130 million I believe. Agree, though, that at that point, the cost of returning the GOR is much easier to negotiate.

This is correct. FSU filed the suite hoping for a P2 home. They aren't trying to stay in the ACC with money on the UCF level, they wanted to be in a position to compete with UF for resources and revenues. "Extracting" added benefits from the ACC is a face saving gesture for the fans so they can claim a win. Clemson was looking for any way to stay tied to FSU as they're best hope for an eventual P2 move is to be FSU's +1
 
I'm confused. If FSU, to say nothing of Clemson, either can't get out of the ACC or don't have a home in the BiG or SEC, why would the other ACC members agree to give them higher revenue shares?

Desperation? If FSU and Clemson are major drivers of football revenue for the ACC, and if ESPN hasn't really guaranteed the TV money beyond 2027, then maybe the lower schools give up some money to the two crybabies in the hope that they are pacified and don't try to bolt earlier.
