For fried; Skippers in Niantic for whole-bellies and oysters. If you prefer Clam strips, then Fred's Shanty on Pequot Ave. in New London.
You must have drank too much, the Duck (food) has been horrible since the ownership/staff/kitchen issues when they reopened, then closed, then reopened, post-Covid, actually dating back to when Mike (Wolfie) passed away almost 10 years ago
PS Westfair Fish & Chips at the back of the Westfair Shopping Center just west of the Fairfield line (across from Stop & Shop) fries up seafood on par with any of the Shoreline seafood shacks.
Let me guess. Put it in a tortilla and slap some rice and beans on the side of it?They are.
Taquerio in Mystic has three or four that are very good, but mostly, we go there as an excuse to have their cocktails.
At some point, if deep asks nicely, I will share the world’s easiest fish taco recipe. It has been perfected by toddlers working tirelessly in our test kitchens and is ready for sharing.
Agreed, but parking is horrific though.Stowe's in West Haven is still my favorite (the only reason I ever go into WH), especially given the relatively low prices. Bill's in Westbrook is our other go-to.
It wasn't great, but I really miss the old Captain's Galley that were in Milford and West Haven. They used to give big piles of clam strips. The strips at Fred's Shanty were good, then you could top off with ice cream from Michael's Dairy a few blocks down. For fried; Skippers in Niantic for whole-bellies and oysters. Also heard Flander's Fish Market in East Lyme is getting more notice. A friend said $8 fish & chips on Tuesdays. It wasn't great, but I really miss the old Captain's Galley that were in Milford and West Haven. They used to give big piles of clam strips. Happy to hear that place hasn't collapsed into the Saugatuck yet. Used to work within walking distance and spent many a night unsure if it was me or the floor to the men's room that was my problem. Although it seems ridiculous they haven't fixed that in the 27 years since I was last there. The Black Duck in Westport is more dive bar than seafood shack, but it has excellent fish tacos and will occasionally have a fish sandwich special that is very good. Don’t drink too much if you go because the floor is very uneven and kind of slants toward the river, and one can wipe out off even a mild buzz.
Gives me a good idea for a new seafood and cocaine bar: Capt Jack's!Capt Scott is it, not Jack's.
I havn’t been down there in about 4-5 years, didn’t realize it was closed. Place checked a lot of boxes as far as seafood and setting go.The OG Fords is closed and was replaced by a similar place called Herrings. You can still get the lobster bomb at Fords Black & Blue which is just a few minutes from the original location in Noank as you head towards Esker Point beach and Groton Long Point.
One of my favorite places to start my day on Martha's Vineyard. Ride my bike from the Oaks Bluff ferry and stop for food and a few beers before riding down to South Beach. Great way to spend the day on MVI. I often take the ferry from New Bedford to avoid some driving and potential traffic.I used to love the Seafood Shanty in Martha's Island in Edgartown - drinking mudslides on the roof watching boats go in and out - fresh seafood. Good way to burn a few hours chilling.
It just changed over last summer. Setting is still the same and I assume the seafood is more or the less the same, but I haven’t been yet as a fords loyalist.I havn’t been down there in about 4-5 years, didn’t realize it was closed. Place checked a lot of boxes as far as seafood and setting go.
Bonus live music. If it’s fried or broiled seafood you want, along with a great bar and relaxed atmosphere go to Lenny’s in Branford.

During my protracted downsizing, packing, and moving adventure, I stayed in Bridgeport, Black Rock, Westport. As it became less and less workable for me to venture even as far east as New Haven, these two continued to do an admirable job.Stowe's in West Haven is still my favorite (the only reason I ever go into WH), especially given the relatively low prices.
