Delaware to CUSA

Nova gonna be next? Upgrade and join some FB conference while AD Dave “monitors?”

UDel is further along as a school than most people realize. Also have a very nice hockey rink which could be div 1 if they ever had the finances. Found that out when entering the wrong building for a broomball tournament once. (The tournament was at the back rink at the facility.)

-> With the move, Delaware also owes around $6 million to the NCAA in entry and exit fees, capital that has to be raised within athletics. Currently, roughly $3.5 million has been raised, university officials told the Inquirer. <-

-> Was the deciding factor behind the move just the FBS football side of stuff?

Rawak:
That’s not the driving force, but it’s certainly a part of the decision-making process. I mean, FBS football really enables so much for us from a university perspective, for our student-athletes and for our community. You know, right now, we are on FloSports and we’re competing, and the number of eyeballs that are watching us, it’s healthy, but it’s certainly not significant. And then as you think about being on ESPN and having ESPN+ as a platform for our student-athletes, and ultimately our university, I mean it’s 40 times what we get on Flo. And so, I mean, that visibility is exciting for us. And again, it’s an enabler for so much more at this university.

2,500 seats! They fit right in with Hockey East!!

With the University of Delaware upgrading into conference USA this may help us out scheduling wise as they will now be a FBS program. They will need out of conference games and since we're in the neighborhood it should be mutually beneficial. They will have many long-distance football games and should welcome a relatively close opponent. If we can get them on the schedule especially for November it would be a win-win for both teams.

Hopefully this happens. They were conference mates before UConn moved up to FBS.

Delaware, UConn, UMass and Temple/Buffalo might make a nice pod in one of these conferences.

I really want to know why they waited to upgrade until the feel increased to 5 million when it was previously 5 thousand. Doesn't seem like a good way to spend resources. Any ideas on your end?

There was probably a confluence of things...

....FCS status as the second football level has waned fairly quickly...a slew of departures from foremost members

...The NCAA moved the FCS Championship game to Sunday where it competes with the NFL (sort of an NCAA show of less dedication)

...The second lowest TV viewing in 10 years, despite moving to ABC from ESPN2.

...The CAA's additions of Campbell and Bryant may further distance Delaware (a flagship) from what they may perceive to be their peers. (Campbell is a private Christian liberal arts university in Buies Creek, NC.....Bryant a small private in RI).

...UD recently did announce it received “a major gift” from ex-quarterback Matt Nagy (and NFL coach) to support an upcoming facilities project.

It didn't seem worth it when it was only a $5000 decision?

That makes no sense. Their move has been rumored for years, it literally just changed, and they are thr 1st school to pay the new fee.

Yeah but before it was only a $5000 decision, barely even meaningful. But now it's a half million dollar decision. You have to pay attention to those things.

Its not half a million decision its a 5 million dollar decision. That's why its so crazy to me. You could have upgraded and paid 5k, instead you drag your feet and pay 5 million? Something is very off about that.

A $5 million decision makes it even more important. Much more important than a $5000 decision!

I don't get what you're saying here. Had they announced their intention to move last year it would have cost them 5k. By waiting it is costing them 5 million. That's 4,995,000 they could have saved and maybe applied it somewhere in the fb program.

Again this has been rumored UD for at least 3 to 5 years if not longer.

I'm saying nothing, nothing at all. Pretty much just making a joke that it was the same decision whether the exit fee was 5000 or 5 million, but once it became 5 million it seemed more important.

So yes, I fully agree with you. It seems like they had their heads up their butts that they didn't make the decision when it was substantially less costly to them.

I'm assuming they needed time to sort out the conference.. perhaps preferring somewhere other than C-USA and that option never materialized

Probably because $5M isn’t that big of a deal when they just spent $125M and they are looking out for the whole AD.

The NCAA Div. I Council Changed the FBS fee from $5000 to $5 million on October 5, 2022...It was effective immediately upon the positive vote.

BUT...this was what was put forward originally....June 2022

The Division I Council is considering a proposal that would increase the transition fee from $5,000 to $5 million, effective upon approval of the measure. All Football Bowl Subdivision schools also would be required to provide 90% of the allowable scholarships in 16 sports, including football, over a rolling two-year period.

If approved, the new rules would take effect Aug. 1, 2027, for current FBS members and FCS schools applying to make the move by 2024-25. Schools that apply after 2024-25 would have to meet the requirements before the end of the two-year transition process.

Delaware likely didn't have an invite last year. That's why they'll eat the 5 million.

Delaware got crushed in the second round of the FCS playoffs by second seeded Montana last night.

Gonna be a long, long time until Delaware plays another playoff game.

They’ve already raised $3.5m+ towards the projected $6m needed for NCAA entry/conference exit fees.

What's all that white stuff in the video?...You'd think that they would have better equipment. I remember snowy screens on our black and white 13 inch TV with rabbit ear antennae in my 1950's childhood in Pensacola.
