The university of Massachusetts has made it clear to Conference USA that they are willing to join for all sports.

CUSA's response? Invite Delaware to join the conference instead.
A minority of UMass fans want the move. UMass does not want to tank their conference standing in basketball in order to put football in a league.

The A10 is a 1 bid league most years now no? What are they risking? Closer games?
The A-10 was a 1-bid league last year, but the was the first time in forever. It is usually a 2 or 3 bid league.

The A-10 is what I call a Tier 2 league. It is not one of the six power conferences, but it is usually a multi-bid league that is ranked between #7-#12.

CUSA is the #13 league. It is a Tier 3 league. It is always a one bid league. The gap between the #12 and #13 league this year is huge.

People have to get out of this institutional fit fixation.

It’s literally just a league to play sports in.

For the B1G or SEC, sure it's just a league to play sports in. When it's paying $5mil to enter all sports into a league with a yearly $800,000 payout where only one one other team is within a 10 hour drive... Institutional fit kinda matters.

UD is also an institution historically so concerned with its image that it refused to even play Del State (the only in state competition) for decades as to not lower their image to that level.

Boots on the ground consensus seems to be that it's a poor fit and the MAC is preferred with maybe even Sun Belt ahead of CUSA.

Better to be FBS in CUSA than Indy in FBS.

If the MAC isn’t an option then what else is there to say?

A-10 is certainly trending in one direction. 1 or 2 bids for a 15 team conference. UMass has made the dance 1 time in like 25 years. I'm pretty sure most UMass fans are fine with tanking their A-10 conference standing if it means playing football in a G5 conference. If they aren't, they need a check-up.

2023 - 1 bid
2022 - 2 bid
2021 - 2 bid
2020 - 1 bid
2019 - 2 bid
2018 - 2 bid
2017 - 3 bid
2016 - 3 bid
2015 - 4 bid
2014 - 3 bid
2013 - 3 bid
2012 - 6 bid
2011 - 5 bid
2010 - 4 bid

Honestly the answer is a league consisiting of UConn, UMass, Delaware, Army, Navy, (Air Force?), USF, Temple, Liberty or JMU for football. NCAA needs to allow FB only leagues.

lol. I think Liberty and JMU are quite happy where they are.
And why on earth would USF prefer that over the AAC?

Matt Brown (Extra Points) seems to hint the #12 will likely be UMass.

Yes. CUSA for FB only. Again, soon there will be nowhere for us to go but down as an Indy sked will not be viable.

The MAC would have been a better fit for Delaware. Maybe the MAC wasn’t interested? They turned down Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky last year.

No MTSU turned down the MAC, which burned WKU.

Probably more likely that none of MAC, CUSA, or Sunbelt would take UD without a partner and only CUSA would accept UMass football only as that partner.

CUSA is not taking UMass for football only. They would have to join in all sports.

Delaware's 2023 105 man football roster was 85.7% from MA/CT/NY/PA/NJ/DE/MD/DC/VA. Their 2023 men's basketball roster is 100% from those states. The schools entire alumni base is also constrained to just the mid Atlantic / north east.

They'll now play entirely outside of that area.

The reality is they chose to upgrade from CAA where they can take a bus ti most games.

They won’t get any sympathy.

Same reality that UConn "chose" to be independent. The whole point is that in the current NCAA the choices schools have are not good for the students or alumni.

Big unknown out there is OSU/wazzou.

If they don’t merge with the MW, but instead cherry pick, that will leave the MW looking for back fill. And western CUSA couid supply those teams.

Well, they do have Liberty in VA, and their home games, and maybe UD will now recruit more kids from Florida and Texas due to playing in those states. It's all ball bearings nowadays.

We already know what is going to happen. It was announced today.
