Prospects Nation reorders its 2022 player list under new guidelines.

A summary of the changes is below:

"With all of this in mind, you’ll notice a change starting with the 2022 class that the ProspectsNation.com ELITE 150. The staff will still select 150 players in each class worthy of that standard, however, the numerical rankings will stop at 25."

Congrats to them. It's about time that they finally acknowledged how ridiculous it was to tell people there was a discernable difference between #80 and #91 or worse, between #107 and #142. Or that there were really 31 Five Stars in one HS class. It will free up a lot of time to make the major decision of determining which one of 20-30 kids gets the coveted #150 position.

12/14 game recap:

Booker had 16 points and five rebounds....

...

“I told Maddie her assignment was to guard 10, Marley, and she did a good job on her,” Glasgow said.

Booker scored the first points on the game on a 3-pointer 2 minutes into the game. Germantown led 10-8 after one quarter, 27-13 at halftime and 41-22 after three quarters. After Booker made the 3-pointer to start the game, she was encouraging her teammates to play good defense and keep the intensity up.

...

Booker – who is also a member of the Elite 11 team with Freeman, Davis and Rouser – showed some flashes of why she is so highly thought of nationally. She made a deep 3-pointer from about 25 feet in front of the Brandon bench. Late in the first half, Booker dribbled behind her back twice as she came down the floor, then dished an assist to Jer’Mya Brandon for a layup. In addition, her defense was superb on Freeman.

Booker’s performance was in front of several hundred fans, including assistant coaches from University of Connecticut and University of Tennessee, two of the nine schools Booker is considering to play for in college. The other seven are Mississippi State, South Carolina, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Oregon, and Texas.

Booker had a scare in the fourth quarter when she went down with an apparent ankle injury, but after going to the dressing room she returned to play most of the fourth quarter before coming out with 1 minute to play.

Newest Shane Laflin blog notes:

Putnam City West (OK) | SHE GOT GAME – Dallas

Taliyah Parker – 2024: Extremely elite athlete who can play at a pace many cannot.. Great instincts and skills.. She makes plays that many cannot because of her intensity and body control.. Stock Riser!

Caya Smith – 2024: Long, athletic, and skilled.. Steady improvements in her player development.. Poised on the floor and is always ready to make a play.. Really good player.. Stock Riser!

Jordan Lee | 2024 | St. Mary’s Stockton (CA) | SHE GOT GAME – DC

Overall, there are not too many holes in Lee’s game. She is as fundamentally sound as they come. She plays the game with a maturity beyond her years. She is long and versatile .. she can both shoot it from range and get to the cup.. She brings a toughness to the defensive end and the glass that leads to winning.. She is very well coached my Alle Moreno, who expects a lot out of her players. St. Mary’s plays a team first style – the ball moves, they defend, and they make adjustments throughout the game. Very bright future here…

Ciera Toomey | 2023 | Dunmore HS (PA) | SHE GOT GAME - DC

Well.. What else is there to say? Toomey is as skilled as it comes in the entire country in any class or any level. She is starting to show a little bit of a competitive edge that I really like… Her footwork is A1.. the stroke is pure… she can put it on the deck with a little bit of shake even.. She is a great passer .. come on!! The duo of her and Drexel-bound PG Mariah Murray is as fun to watch as any in the country. Some were late to the party… not us!!

While we all take rankings with a grain of salt, somehow I think evaluators can pretty easily distinguish top 50ish prospects from next fifty and from the following fifty. By ranking 25 players and the determining that whatever players might have been ranked in the 26-30 range are really just the same as the players that would have be ranked from 125-150 is a bit broad.

I think it is more useful to have evaluators actual make their guesses 1-100 than abdicate any ranking after #25.

ESPN at least uses a triple ranking system of 'rank' #1-100 and then stars where the stars are 1-5 but really only 3-5 for the top 100 and then grade where the grade is really an 8 point system 98-91 for the top 100.

Can you imagine the calls and letters they must get from parents who insist that their daughter is a top 100? Harder to claim top 25.

Interesting to consider team class rankings in this light.

Let’s consider:
Perfect Class Ranking = 3 or more of these stars.
Super class Rankings = 2 of these stars

There are no Perfect classes for 2023. (I believe UConn and SCar would have had Perfect classes for 2021.)

Super Class: there are 7 Super Class teams. Let’s rank those teams by average stars:

1. UConn 6 &8 . . . 7 average
2. Oregon State 5&10 . . . 7.5 a v
3. Stanford 1&18 . . . 9.5 avg
4. UCLA 2&18 . . . 10 avg
5. SCar 10&22 . . . 16 avg
6. Oregon 13&23 . . . 18 avg
7. Duke 15&24 . . . 19.5 average

And congrats to the other schools who got one of these stars.

Meh, just random thoughts

Gutsy game by KK Arnold tonight. She couldn't buy a shot from anywhere, got a couple tough calls, and her team looked over-matched, down by 22 at the half. Never saw any bad body language from her, and with the help of a press and her all-around game Germantown came back to win by 5.

Arnold: 19 points (6-15 FG, 1-7 3-PT, 6-12 FT), 9 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals

Mikaylah Williams: 26 points

Williams' game Friday was postponed over Covid, and I have a feeling we're going to be seeing many more of those upcoming.
