Creighton Post Game Thread

Took the night off from the Yard. Twenty-three pages of observations already.
Greg outcoached Danny on this night with in game adjustments. Creighton played with intensity and focus. Probably as close to their A game (with this year's team) as they've played all year. Credit to them.

In the first half- Was stunned at the ease with which their guards controlled pace and got down hill into the paint. With minimal rim protection at the hoop. Ball/AK/Mullins were repeatedly beat off of the dribble-allowing them to get their shots. Seemed obvious to me that despite AK's effort-He was not playing healthy- Foot speed/leg strength was definitely affected. Thought Ross provided energy throughout the game.

Second half we abandoned Tarris (again) .Put him on ice. And tried to win with our shooters. Seemed like Danny handed the keys to the car to Mullins to shoot us into a victory. We had multiple opportunities in and around the paint to score-with good shots-and they didn't fall. "Stuff" happens.

Greg continues to work his good cop-bad cop deal with refs when playing Dan. 34 FTs.10-5 isn't luck. Plenty to work on before Nova on Saturday. Guess we'll see what kind of resilience our guys have. Nova will be ready. Man in the mirror time.

We have been flirting with danger in games like this all year. We played like garbage against Georgetown then spent the last few days getting called out for fan support.

Well, tonight you had $2 beers, free t shirts, a kid walking 40 miles to the game and Okafor giving an impassioned speech at halftime.

And the team laid an egg.

Play better and the fans will act accordingly. This one is on the coach and the team.
Behold the power of anti-haiku, and those who are amused by it.

One positive: I loved Ross' energy and length on defense. He's a key piece to this team and championship level teams need glue guys like him.

On the flipside, I'm trying to figure out pragmatically what is the cause of Solo Ball's defensive issues. He's athletic and I don't see an effort issue. He's also got a plus wingspan and he's surrounded by capable defenders in the backcourt, so it's not like he's left out there to dry. If there's one area that's clear that he needs to work on, it's switching off screens and/or PnR D, but what can he do to work his way to an at-least average level on defense?

With Mullins' shot-making and Ross' ability to defend and stretch the floor, I'm dreaming up more lineups with Demary at the 1, Mullins at the 2 and Ross at the 3, but realistically we need Ball to play well on both ends if we want to reach our ceiling.

Side note: Karaban is clearly still affected by his quad injury, so his impact will be on the rise once that's cleared up.

Coach Hurley coached his ass off his first few years here. It seems he is coasting this year. No passion on the sidelines. His coaching moves are non-existent or has made play worse. None of the players are progressing. Most have regressed. Embarrassing display last night in front of a national audience against a garbage team.

This was a brutal loss. Very bad defense. Poor free throw shooting. Shot selection was poor for stretches. Missed layups.

Step away from the ledge, the sky is not falling.

Defense can be adjusted and return to the level we have seen. Sure, it has been quite some time since we have seen elite defense consistently but this team is capable of it with some adjustments.

We went cold for long stretches. The entire team went cold. We also went away from what was working, feeding Reed. Shot selection and missed layups were a big piece of the cold stretch. Missing good shots can happen to anybody. Poor shot selection can be fixed. Every player is capable of making layups. They need to refocus on both ends of the floor.

Free throw shooting is what it is at this point. Reed is really the only weak spot from the free throw line, out of the starting 5. The other four starters are fine.

Everybody relax. I am upset with the performance as well. Refocus. The next two games will be tough and telling how we react. Hurley is calling for championship mettle. Now is the time to show we still have it.

Ball is hardly athletic. When he tries to finish around the hoop, he rarely elevates but instead bails out trying to draw a foul.

Looked ahead to Villanova and St John’s. Overestimated McDermott and his Midwest min

Hurley? Team? Fans ?

Probably all of the above.

After the 27 point victory, Creighton was underestimated.

We missed something like 11 of 12 shots including some very makable ones from about the 9 minute mark on. Everybody missed in that stretch. That is when it completely got away from us.

But I’ve been waiting for this game. A bad loss to a bad team. We have not played well since December with the exception of the games at Creighton and Xavier. It’s been the same garbage. Let inferior teams hang around when a couple of shots would have put them away, missed foul shots, poor defense, critical turnovers too many fouls, lack of anything coming from bench players. In the other games we were able to turn it up in the final few minutes and our better talent let us pull games out. Last night we couldn’t do it. That is a risky way to live and last night it came back to bite us.

Or maybe we lost on purpose to make certain our earlier Creighton win was a quad 1 win! LOL! Just throwing it out there since it’s the only excuse the usual cheerleaders have’t given us.

Absolute losers on this thread trashing Alex Karaban. You can hide it under the guise of inciting debate or objective analysis but there's no denying what it is. Whether you think he's talented or he's an oaf hiding out as a role player it's a horrible look for some people

Creighton always ready and gives us a tough game! I'm glad its only one game.

Lose, Learn from it, Improve. Be ready for MARCH/APRIL!

Not the end of the world...

Are we really surprised by the guy who's leading it?

On Alex, I know there isn’t a direct line drawn between the two statements but:

1) He’s a great kid. Hard worker. Smart on court judge. Key contributor to 2 all time great NCAA title teams. The type of kid you’d be glad if you’re daughter brought home

2) For the second year in a row, we are approaching March looking for a freshman (who missed a month) to lead us.
Nothing you said here is wrong, but Silas Demary Jr is a pretty relevant difference for point 2

Absolutely disgusting display.

I tried to walk away and couldn’t

Yeah, I know Reed had 15 in the first half, but he likely gave up just as many letting everyone get to the rim at ease

His help defense is dreadful. My seats last night gave me a great view of the lane and numerous times he didn’t leave his guy on obvious runs to the rim by a Creighton player who just took someone off the dribble. I mean part the seas stuff and he won’t leave his guy until the last second to try to block the shot, never succeeds because he’s late. Leave your guy, make them pass the ball at least and people can rotate. Tarris just isn’t the rim protector we need with such lackluster defenders on the perimeter. Add to that he couldn’t make a shot 2nd half, not good.

The door is now wide open for the lineup change many here have wanted with Ross. And from Hurley's postgame comments it sounds like it's coming

It sounded like that but Hurley also added nothing major just to give a jolt.

I think defense is more important now than having Solo's streaking scoring bursts. Having Solo off the bench as a microwave - instant scorer could be more impactful in our current scenario.

RuffRuff asked if you think AK got 2 million per year the past two years. You answered definitely, the numbers being thrown around behind the scenes are crazy.

What are the numbers being thrown around behind the scenes?
No one on this board has any clue what our players are getting paid and if they say they do, they are lying

Less Ball and more athleticism will help. More defined roles offensively. Turn Ball into the microwave off the bench.
Starting line up is missing wing defense and versatility. Bench is missing a scoring punch. Seems like a natural fix to me at this point.

I was against it early on because of the idea of what Solo could be. We can’t wait on that anymore

What would’ve come of Derek Jeter if he was drafted by the Rockies. What would’ve come of Draymond if he was drafted by the Nets. What would’ve come of Tristen Newton had he stayed at ECU. We can do this all day.

And no, UConn was lucky to get Alex the player.

Well Jeter would’ve hit more HRs in Colorado that’s for sure lol.

I mean, no we’re not lmao. We have an idea. YOU just don’t know.

A STORRS central subscription would have even given you an estimate on what we spent on the roster. This stuff isn’t top secret information
