unless you are in lock step with all of the "regular" posters, or clear your post with them first. Or expect to be attacked from all sides.......Friendly site.
Want to know something interesting. If you made a similar post to the one you made regarding Aja on the men's bb forum you would have received a lot of support. That is the difference between there and here.

However the rebuttal from those who disagreed with you would be far greater and more intense than anything this site dishes out. Over there people get chewed up and spit out even when things are going great. The badly wounded come over here to mend.

If you are going to post dismissive statements about a recruit such as "I am not sure UConn needs her ego," and "She is enjoying the attention way too much," of course many other posters are going to disagree with you and some will do so vociferously.

I don't understand your complaint about being attacked. You fired a salvo. Others fired back. What did you expect? Did you think everyone was going to agree with you?

HP's castigation in the original thread came from his derogatory attribution of feelings & motivations to a person of whom he has no personal (and slight impersonal) knowledge.

This would have been supported on the men's board???

Wow, DD. Seriously waspish today, eh what?

In this thread, he disparaged the Boneyard, not a recruit. You brought that (and your attitude about it) over here.
Excuse me, but he started this thread because of his original post disparaging the recruit and how he was treated. It is certainly relevant here.

Waspish? That is the first time this Jewish guy has ever been called that.

Apples and oranges
Not really.

In the world of academia not geared toward the athletically gifted but the intellectually gifted, you may not realize it but there is a great deal of competition for the best and the brightest students. My sons never received letters from Yale, Harvard, MIT, Princeton - but they had friends who were HEAVILY "recruited" by those schools and who applied and were accepted by most, if not all, of them. My sons were no slouches to be sure. They received letters from some top notch schools (Stanford and CalTech among them). But they were not in the top echelon of students. Let's say they were among the top Div II talent for sake of comparison to athletics.

You are entitled to your own opinion, of course. But I am curious, and I am dead serious here. If there was a student who scored a perfect SAT score every time they took it, was a solid A+ student including advance placement courses and college level courses, won all kinds of academic awards and competitions, achieved success outside the classroom in running a business or publishing a book or inventing a product and that student received recruitment letters from every top academically ranked university and said student saved every one of them in boxes in their home (living room, bedroom, whereever) - would you feel the student was "making too much of the whole process" and that a given school "didn't need her/his ego"? Or is that sentiment reserved only for athletes?

I am not meaning to attack you. But I find your "apples and oranges" comment a bit insulting. Seems you equate the recruitment of students based on academics very differently than the recruitment of athletes. I presume you meant that the recruitment of athletically gifted student has a higher "ego" factor, or is more glamourous than recruitment based on "mere" academics. Or did I read too much into your "apples and oranges" statement?

I'm amazed at how posters have forgotten that, regardless of being the #1 or #3000 basketball player in the country, college is not (and should not be) only about basketball. College constitutes 4 very important, in some cases absolutely critical, years of personal and intellectual growth.

I can't believe that anyone would suggest that a high school student would make a decision without visiting and carefully examining such factors as the people she'll spend time with, the campus, the academic experience, the "culture" of the sports department and the university overall, etc. There are sooooo many other factors I could list that have to be considered.

Finally, even for those who are absolutely set on pursuing a basketball career (or even a business, engineering, law etc); she should not just choose indiscriminately and solely based upon "job" factors. For example, when I decided after law school which job to take, I didn't just choose based upon which had the best "professional" qualities, I also had to consider where I wanted to live, what the organization's environment and philosophy were, who my co-workers would be etc. It was not a quick or easy process.

I'm glad that A'ja is taking her time and analyzing her options carefully. Frankly, even if she were dragging it out because she is enjoying the experience: good for her! She earned all the attention, accolades, and opportunities she has received and deserves to enjoy them.

Patty, if you've found nothing but respectful discussions around this board its obvious you haven't been around us long enough yet. I'll check back in with you around mid March.

I've been around for many March/April periods. People may disagree around here (sometimes a LOT) but generally it is done respectfully and even those that are a bit below that "respectful" line are still pretty much head and shoulders above the level of vitriol I've seen on other boards.

Without even visiting the men's board, I don't doubt it. That's the stuff of most message boards.

Why I visit this board - the "community" as described above doesn't tend to support out-on-a-limb statements that are not supported by fact.

UNC is also a finalist for AW. Just ask Blake; he'll make that assertion...

Fair enough on your point.

Still think you're grumpier than usual today, tho.

I read the original HP post in the other thread and made a comment in that thread disagreeing with him. Your description of his post is accurate imo.

And yes that type of commentary is and has been presented frequently even as there are people attempting to moderate the tone of things. There were two recruits this past recruiting period, Abu and Perkins, whose recruitment process disturbed a number of posters on the men's forum and received commentary which was vitriolic in nature. Some commentary would never have been accepted in this forum. It's a different mind set. As I explained each of the Boneyard sites have developed a culture of their own.

The men's forum has everything from cerebral discussions to smack talk.

This forum went through an "atypical" phase during the Pat Summit fiasco regarding the SEC and NCAA investigation she initiated against Geno and UConn. I thought it was interesting that so many posters let their hair down and started to to express their opinions in a manner that approached what takes place on the men's forum on a daily basis.

The football forum is somewhere's between the women's bb and men's bb forums in the manner posters express their opinions and what constitutes civility. The CR forum is closer in its manner of commentary to this forum. The only thing that has changed over time is that the CR forum is currently heavily populated by non UConn folks.

No it would not. A post like that of the #1 player in the class (say Andrew Wiggins from last year) would have been met with much more vitriol. He also would have been hung.

I've observed a lot of commentary in this forum that are opinions and not necessarily fact based. For instance Stef taking three's vs. playing in the post. That's the primary type of discussion that takes place in the men's forum and the discussion is very informative. It's the tonality of the language that is different. People just express themselves and are not concerned if the manner they speak will be condoned or attacked. I like a little spice in people so that behavior doesn't offend me.

It is refreshing in a way because not many people in that forum wear masks to disguise their persona. We are so conditioned to "behave" in a certain manner we tend to forget who was that child our parents gave birth to as opposed to the child society says we have to be.

So I went back and read the series of posts that apparently upset you enough to post this bit - and it seems that most of the responses were pretty informative and not at all aggressive. They simply disagreed with you and offered back supporting their views.
You opined:

That she has an ego that UConn doesn't need, based upon the amount of material she has saved from the colleges pursuing her...and given that she is a #1 recruit, there is a lot of material which is understandable.

That she should have this all narrowed down to 4 schools by now...based on what? You offered no explanation for this point other than "it should look no different by 2014.

That she is enjoying this process way too much...again, based upon what evidence?

Have you insight to this process? Do you know what her area of study is going to be? What do you know about her situation other than she is a #1 recruit and UConn wants her, and that she plans on announcing at the regular signing period....mind you, regular signing period, and not the EARLY signing period which is the time frame in which we currently stand.

You say that your post is your opinion. Yes it is. My thought is that If you didn't want responses to your opinion, maybe you should have kept it to yourself and not posted it on the 'yard. However you didn't, you posted it on the boneyard and as far as the definition of forum is concerned, each post is open for comment.

And the hat actually looks good on you, so that's pretty much the end of whatever fun I might have been able to have.

I'm wondering if @Dove should be part of this. Maybe he would recommend it for Cooley.
