I wonder how many wins Hatchell will lose when the NCAA hammer drops on UNC? Could be in the hundreds.

Geno should move into 4th place by end of the season in number. He's #1 in win %

Don't think the blue blood helps their women's program though...aren't they half thrown under the bus by the school already?
Yes. UNC will voluntarily vacate every single win in the program's history if it means protecting the football and Coach K's program. Destroying their WCBB program is merely the cost of doing business in today's college athletics world. Hatchell and her program will be the pound of flesh that UNC hopes will satiate the NCAA.

It seems a near certainty at this point that Geno will overtake Stringer this season. Barring drastic improvement, it's hard to imagine Rutgers even getting to .500 in the Big 10, even if it is the weakest of the "power 5." The games against Wisconsin (twice), Illinois, Iowa (twice) and Nebraska are certainly winnable for Rutgers, but C-Viv would probably need to win at least 11 games (and probably more) in the Big 10 regular season plus conference tournament to even stay tied with Geno heading into the NCAAs. If she can snag a bid to the WNIT (though it seems unlikely) or one of the lesser postseason tournaments, that could change the calculus.

The NCAA has had years to investigate UNC. In the meantime they have investigated and ruled on many other cases. And yet no penalty against UNC. There is ample reason to be skeptical that anything will ever happen.

Tara will pass 1000 this year. Hatchell next year, along with Stevens and Geno. RU is so bad this year, it's no longer guaranteed that CVS will pass 1000 next year.

Geno could move to #3 mid next year.

Exactly. If they do anything to UNC at all -- which I doubt -- they are likely to scapegoat the women.

I don't think Rutgers wins more than 9 games this year; certainly no WNIT bid. Incidentally, 9 wins (9-20) was the last time Stringer had a losing season, about 15 years ago. I'm imagine the program would like to give her another year to reach the 1ooo win plateau, but with the current state of the roster, there's no guarantee she gets 15-20 wins next year.

It is complicated. A portion of the fan base, many of whom never liked her to begin with, are proactively wanting her gone.

There is some truth that next year's team will be better. No graduates (except a walk on), return of the best player from medical red-shirt, return of a respectable player from ACL and 3 decent transfers able to play after serving NCAA transfer year. And another year's experience for the rest.

That said, nothing is guaranteed and it still seems a team that is not - by CVS standards - particularly talented.

So, a portion of the fan base is "wait till next year".

And the rest of the fan base - and I think the majority - are accepting of either; the AD could terminate her after the bad season (and what could you say) or keep her on the grounds of potential expectations.

The NCAA will not touch a blue blood.
Well not the men's team anyway...

[actually, they just annouced new allegations, so hope springs eternal, I guess.}

If this had happened at UConn the basketball progams would already be shut down, and Geno and Kevin would be in the unemployment line and given show-causes.

? The Husky men were banned from post-season play because of text messages sent to a guy that never played a single game at UConn. And the four time national championship winning UConn men are considered blue bloods.

How on earth is CViv clearing a$700,000/year base salary?? She has driven the Rutgers program into the ground after 10-12 good years. I know she got very defensive about taking a pay cut, but the program has been dreadful for the last several years and even with better talent, doesn't appear to be in any shape to become a Sweet 16 squad in the next 3-4 years. Rutgers athletics are miserable to begin with, but that money could be used to bring in a better coach who will produce better results.

I have good news and better news.
UConn moved to 11-0 beating Nebraska and extending its winning streak to 86.
Geno now has won 966 games narrowing the gap with CViv to 8.
You knew all this from the top posts in this thread.

Here is the better news.
I have posted a few times about this wikipedia page List of college women's basketball coaches with 600 wins
The page is maintained mostly by Oakraven81 who updates the list about once a week.
He now has now been joined by 67.180.248.170 - a San Francisco IP address.
Mr/Ms IP address edits the list whenever Geno wins a game.
He correctly enters Geno's number and does not touch rest of the list.
In this way he is expediting Geno's march to a higher ranking on Wikipedia.
You can verify this by checking the History tab.
It may not matter given Rutgers' performance this season. But you have been warned.

I wonder how many more wins. That Pat would have had. Had she not gotten health problems.

I wonder how many more wins that Geno would have had he become a head coach at age 22 and feasted on a steady diet of cupcakes for a decade or so.

Kurt Vonnegut said it:
"Of all sad words of mice and men, the saddest are 'It might have been.'"

Again, it is complicated. I'm not sure how much she has driven the program into the ground and how much a variety of circumstances have led to where it is at now, as I say, there are a variety of factors.

They have not been "dreadful" in recent years - they sure are now. In recent years they were below expectations, not up to prior standards, etc., but far from dreadful.

I am one of the RU fans that really will accept happily whatever RU decides to do - I expect the team to be better going forward, but am unconvinced how much better - not thinking Sweet 16 is likely.

Fans can only hope they would direct money to a new coach. That is problematical, as well. And there is certainly no guarantee that the new coach "will" produce better results, only that better results are hoped for.

Barbara Stevens did coach D1 for 3 years - not sure exactly how the NCAA tracks records, but it seems to be any D1 coaching makes their record a 'D1' record - UMass 83-86

I am repeating my post regarding why Geno may move up the ranks of winning coaches on Wikipedia sooner than later.

I get the P5 and RU/AZ opponent coaches' win/loss record before each season, using the NCAA web-site. So far as I can tell, they do not differentiate divisions at all. They do not include Junior College by whatever name (Andy Lander's gripe) and they don't include NAIA so far as I could tell, nor do they combine men and women (for example, Mike Carey has coached both).

I do believe you can get separate lists of most wins by division in the NCAA record-book.

Correction to the note on Tara VanDerVeer:
Tara skipped the 1995-96 season to coach the olympic team (while simultaneously doing a job on Rebecca Lobo).
She sacrificed the 29-3 record the Cardinals got that season. Her 1993-94 and 1994-95 records are included in the statistics.
The 1995-96 W/L records go to co-head coaches Marianne Stanley and Amy Tucker. Both are credited with the W/L record on the NCAA webpage.

Clarification about Sylvia Hatchell:

NCAA rules are
If the head coach is not present at a contest due to illness or other unexpected circumstances, or otherwise is unable to complete the sport season, it is the responsibility of the institution to determine, preferably prior to the contest, whether the win, loss or tie for that contest shall be credited to the head coach or to an interim or assistant coach.
At Stanford, the school and Tara VanDerveer together must have made the decision to credit Amy Tucker and Marianne Stanley with the wins during the 1995-96 season. At North Carolina, the school decided to credit Hatchell with the wins. This is a very common decision and certainly not tainted by any stretch of imagination.
At LSU, Sue Gunter missed the major part of the 2003-04 season due to illness. Pokey Chatman coached the team. But the school credits the season to Gunter. there is nothing tainted about it.

Hatchell was suspended for 2 games in 2016. One suspension came from the university and per NCAA rules, she was credited with the W/L record for that game. The other suspension came from NCAA. She received credit for that game as well.
If a head coach is suspended for a game or more by the school or conference, he or she is still eligible to receive the wins or losses in his or her absence, but some institutions have chosen to give the record to the interim coach. If a head coach is suspended by the Committee on Infractions, he or she will not receive credit for the wins or losses; those decisions will go toward the interim coach’s record. Other unique circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
BY had detailed discussion about this and I do not remember the explanation.
